Back from Balkans

Back from Balkans Photographs by Pierre Gély-Fort

april 2015, Ljubljana, Slovenia

Foreword
From a decade of regular visits to the Balkans, mainly to Slovenia, Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia, numerous images remain engraved in my memory.
Initially oriented by “Balkans-Transit”, the account by François Maspero, illustrated by the wonderful black and white expressionist photographs of Klavdij Sluban, my gaze was gradually freed from the influence of the oftentimes overly dark image of this region.
Two years spent living and working in the Balkans and neighbouring countries immersed me in the humanity of these populations. Back in France, countless flashbacks guided this visual narrative rather than the traditional chapters of a book.
The encounter with these peoples, from the doorstep of Italy to the depths of Serbia, revealed a fascinating mix of the painful traces of the past and the desire to move forward by means of the imposed modernity of a globalized world.
Without overlooking their tragic history that risks re-emerging, even today in 2022, ultimately what I was most struck by is their immense and indelible lust for life and desire to live in peace.
But for how much longer?
