Commuter Issues
o Commuter pay – consider when traveling to alternate clinical
sites that may be an hour away from the main hospital
o Limits on travel distance AND time to and from satellite sites
o Negotiate for "Indemnification" which means to hold another
party harmless. In this situation where a doctor may be
commuting for work, negotiate to have the hospital indemnify
you as an employee, e.g. means if you get in an accident or
injure someone while driving between work sites i.e. Between
hospital to hospital or hospital to clinic etc. the victim can only
sue your hospital/company and not you personally.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dr. Bonnie Simpson Mason has committed the entirety of her career
to educating and empowering her current and future physician
colleagues. As a self-proclaimed innovator, void-filler and driver of
solutions, Dr. Mason believes that with the right information, tools
and resources that all students, residents and physicians can be
successful, both professionally and personally.
Dr. Mason is also the Co-Founder/Chief Executive Officer of Beyond
the Exam Room, where she has developed a comprehensive, CME-
accredited business of medicine, career-development, leadership
and financial curriculum that she has been delivering to young
physicians in conjunction with physician colleagues and trusted
advisors over the past 15 years.
Dr. Mason was the Founder and Executive Director of Nth
Dimensions. Dr. Mason designed all aspects of execution and
delivery of the Nth Dimensions physician pathway program and
curriculum, to decrease disparities in the healthcare workplace by
increasing the number of women and other underrepresented
minorities in competitive specialties, including orthopedic surgery,
radiology, dermatology, and ophthalmology. Her effectiveness over
the past 15 years in diversity and inclusion was acknowledged by the
American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery in 2015 with its Diversity
Award.
Dr. Mason earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from
Howard University in Washington, DC, her Doctor of Medicine
degree from Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, her
general surgery internship at UCLA, completed her residency at
Howard University Hospital in the Division of Orthopedic Surgery,
where she was named Chief Resident of the Year. She served as a
board-certified orthopedic surgeon and chief operating officer for
her group practice in Washington, DC, and clinical assistant
professor at Howard University; then as an adjunct associate
professor at the University of Louisville in GME; and, is presently

adjunct assistant professor at UTMB in Orthopedic Surgery and
Rehabilitative Medicine.
