NARRATED ABU HURAIRAH: THAT THE MESSENGER OF ALLAH (صلى الله عليه وسلم (SAID: “WHOEVER TAKES A PATH UPON WHICH TO OBTAIN KNOWLEDGE, ALLAH MAKES THE PATH TO PARADISE EASY FOR HIM.”
Being born in a family where both of my parents are teachers, I have always been interested in teaching since I was young. I am very clear about my vision in life, where during my undergraduate study I already aimed to be a lecturer. I plan my career step by step and wisely. During those days, I seldom find myself enjoying teaching my friends about studies topic. It gives me such satisfaction when my friends could understand what I am explaining. I also always looking forward to presenting in front of the class. What I love about teaching is, the one who teaches must be very responsible for the knowledge they were transferring, this means he or she must make sure the facts are true and not otherwise. This is why for me teaching is such a noble job. It actually will make us humble as the more we learn, the more we know that we don't know. Teaching also pushes me to be a better seeker of knowledge. No one knows everything, thus we have to continuously learn through out our lives. As a lecturer, I must always update my knowledge to keep up with the advancement in the technology and science. During the early days of me being a lecturer, I was always looking for a suitable teaching style, I also struggling in building relationship with my students as I was too attached to them. I did not know what kind lecturer should I be, should I be the fierce lecturer? Likeable lecturer? Fun lecturer? As time goes by, I know that it is not about me... it is about the students, about what I have to offer as a teacher and guidance. As I learned in Medical education, I realize there are science and evidenced in teaching which answered so many questions that have been on my mind through out the years. NOR AZURA PORTFOLIO 01 TEACHING PHYLOSOPHY
NOR AZURA PORTFOLIO When I applied the knowledge that i have got from my classes in Medical Education, I felt like everything make more sense (not always, but most of the time). I felt so fortunate and motivated to learn Medical Education in depth and it is my aim to make a progressive change in dental education and be as advanced as medical education. I also develop an interest in assessment and clinical teaching as these two topics are challenging for me. Assessment is a very complicated subject but at the same time it is a very important part of education as it has to be done correctly and we need to be fair in giving marks that reflect the student's outcome. As a clinician, I am often involved in clinical teaching, and I saw many challenges in this area of education which among it is dealing with timid and shy students. Maybe this is due to our cultural background, but is shy a bad thing? Not entirely. Sometimes it is a good characteristic to be humbled and knowing your place. Maybe as a lecturer in Malaysia, we need to try different approach from western lecturers because we came from totally different social and educational background. I was hoping to explore in this matter. With God willing, I will try to improve my knowledge and skills as well as doing research on dental education. I am happy to share the knowledge with my colleagues. I also come to the realization being a lecturer is not an easy job, it requires so many skills, commitment and knowledge.

NOR AZURA PORTFOLIO REFLECTION ON TEACHING ACTIVITIES Event: Conducting practical after learning about active learning When I first become a lecturer 9 years ago, I always thought about becoming like some of my favourite lecturers that I have encountered during learning journey. Previously, I strictly teach students what I think is important, as I did not know much about the concept behind student-centred learning. I used to talk or explain to students rather than encourage them to think by themselves. Mostly I just spoon feed them with tons of information (verbal learning style) and getting disappointed when they could not recall what I have taught. Little that I know that time, just by listening students can only remember 20% of the content (Dale Edgar’s Cone of learning) and there are many other methods in teaching for adult learners. After learning about teaching and learning since I enter the master programme, I started to look back on my all experience and relate on the theory behind it. When I conduct a practical session on 2nd November 2022, that time I planned to integrate all the knowledges that I have learned. During the session, I was assigned to teach on practical of basic surgical skills: Suturing, for a group (8 people) of year 4 undergraduate dental students in USIM. The students have received a lecture pertaining on the same topic. I was eager to start as I was excited to use all the teaching method. This time, I want to treat them as adult learners which contrast with my previous experience where I always look at them as unmatured teenagers. I now realised that my responsible is not just conveying information (teacher-centred), but to guide them (guide on side) in learning and to accept each students have their own pace (depending on their learning curve and difficulty of the subject) in learning because there are many types of learners such as visual, auditory, kinaesthetic and scribble. 03
I first ask them “Why do you need to learn suturing?” which I want them to be clear on the lesson learning outcome of this session. Most of them just stared at me and start mumbling, which I hate. I started to feel irritated. I then explain to them, that they are all adult learners with responsibility and they need to participate during this discussion, and I will not teach them everything but they need to do their own learning (to be more self-regulated learners). I also advise them to take the Deep Approach in learning, rather than Surface approach. After that, a few of them start to respond to my questions. I try to ask them questions related to clinical situation such as “If a patient come to you with a laceration lower lip exposing the muscle, what type of suture and suturing technique will you choose?” I hope by asking this kind of question will make they think deeply and apply their previous knowledge (Constructivism theory).During the session, they also will try to perform on their own suturing through kinaesthetic learning. I now realised that I don’t have to teach them everything because I was there to guide, somehow that make me feel less burden. Previously I always did not have enough time to talk about everything. I felt less angry too this time. I treat them as co learners and try not to scold them if they did not answer my question correctly. The students appear comfortable and start to ask me question, which I really appreciate. I really enjoy discussing with my students. I can see their thinking flow. This experience really make me believes in the theory on learning that I have learned for the past one month. However, I still wish I have more time with the students as each of them only have few attempt in performing the suturing techniques and I cant observe them one by one. However, I have learn that students can also learn from their peers (Vygotsky Social Constructivism), so I identify one good student and ask him to observe other students and share the knowledge. My future plan is to study more on the effective teaching methods and understanding more from my students perspective, what they need from me to guide them in their study. I realise that one of my challenges is to encourage my students to be active learner, which can be achieved by implementing the active learning methods. I will also must reflect on my previous experience, to recognize what is good and what is wrong and to improve it in the future.
