Sappi Saiccor held the CEO Excellence Awards at the Technology Centre on Wednesday,
28 April 2021, to celebrate and applaud the contribution made by our employees.
In attendance were Sappi Southern Africa’s CEO Alex Thiel and Vice President: Forestry
Duane Roothman, who handed over the certificates. They were joined by Saiccor Mill
GM Beverley Sukhdeo.

Rob Griffith are among some of the Sappi colleagues

Last year April, when South Africa had just
entered into the reality of what it would take to
survive in a COVID-19 disrupted world,

to the plate and began with the distribution of
much-needed scarce items such as hand
sanitiser, face masks and nutritional porridge -
to clinics, crèches and NGOs in our
neighbouring communities.

Electrical apprentices gearing
up for phase two training

The first group of Electrical Apprentices are currently busy with second phase
training at the Skill Centre. Over the 10 weeks, the second phase training will
enhance their electrical knowledge from basic principals of operation of alternating
current and direct current, all the way to planning and wiring of different starter and
control panels.

Techniques on selection, use and fault finding of different electrical
components forms a major part of the second phase training.
The following modules outline the current training:

• Basic operation of AC and DC power
• AC and DC motors
• Various single phase and three phase starter panel diagrams and wiring
• Fault finding on single phase and three phase starter panels
• Basic PLC training
• Basic variable speed drives
• Transformers and transformer calculations
• Switchgear components
• Cable selection, gland fitting and cable splicing
• Various types of lights.

On completion of the phase two training, the apprentices will gain more
practical experience in the mill with the assistance and guidance of the
electrical artisans.
