application robot, a new body label robot, a PLC
upgrade, new operator interfaces, new safety fencing,
and a new system integration.
The upgrade work commenced on 09 April 2021
during the annual plant shut. Equipment erection was
completed on 22 April, programming and testing
took place from 17 April to 04 May, and wrapping
optimisation started on 05 May 2021, with continuous
production starting on 08 May 2021.
The Pesmel construction team consisted of nine
people, headed by Site Manager Artturi Kivistö. The
team was progressively reduced to where only Keroles
Gabra remained on-site for three weeks to conduct
operator training.
The mill Electrical team of Husafa Rajah-Saib and
Jacques Hulley played a huge role in the success of
the project, with ongoing reviews of the project scope,
providing information for programming, and general
troubleshooting and assistance.

The future wrapline maximum continuous production Head press station
has been aligned with the winder upgrade work to
enable a production of 1,179 ADT per day. This means
a design capacity of 115 rolls per hour, a cycle time per
wrapping stage of 32 seconds, and logistically, a range
of 1,500 to 2,000 rolls per day of 470kg to 750 kg each

Future Proof Skills - Your skills guide for tomorrow
In this dedicated column, we want to encourage online learning and introduce
courses that can be of interest to you.
The first course looks at Data Science. Let’s find out more.
Data Science
What is it?
Data science focuses on extracting insights from vast amounts of
data by using various scientific methods, algorithms, and processes.
Why is it important?
It gives companies the opportunity to gain valuable insights from
multiple data sources, which allows for smarter decisions that will
benefit the organisation.
What resources do Sappi make available to support future proof skills?
There are a few courses available on Sappi Learning:

trainees
The Sappi Skills Centre recently hosted four delegates
on the PLC – Basic Course. Here are some feedback.
Monwabisi Ngcobo, Electrical Engineer in Training:
“The course was beneficial, because I’m exposed to
PLCs in my line of work. The course sparked my love for
automation and its ability to simulate real-life scenarios.
Above all, the course was informative and I’m ready to
start practicing programming in my spare time and use
what I have learnt in the plant setup.”
Simphiwe Nxumalo, Trainee Production Manager:
“The PLC – Basic Course was interesting and presented
in a manner that was easy to understand. I learnt
more about software to hardware, and this his basic
knowledge will enable me to give more input during
sessions like RCAs, where PLCs are associated with the
root cause of the problem or machine failure.”
