Valuing life is an unselfish act
that puts ‘we’ and ‘us’ first

Our safety slogan, ‘I value life’, is a reminder
that life is precious, and that each one of us
has the responsibility to ensure our own
safety and wellbeing, and that of our
colleagues, loved ones and the environment.

It is an act of unselfishness; of not just focusing on ‘me’, Banothile Myeza: “To me, the theme

We focus on zero so you
can live like a hero

Part of Sappi’s focus on safe behaviour and a culture
of ‘valuing life’, is our unwavering commitment to the
ultimate safety goal of achieving zero injuries and
fatalities in the workplace.

Project Zero remains our overarching global safety
initiative; each of the regional safety programmes
pursues the same goal – no injuries and no deaths.

We believe we can achieve this with enhanced safety
procedures, training and most importantly, behaviour.

Project Zero seeks to accelerate improved safety
performance groupwide and to develop a safety-first
mindset among all staff and in every part of the
business.

When no one is injured after a day’s work, everyone can
go home unharmed and live life to the full.

Let’s all become committed safety heroes by taking When no one is injured after a day’s

Skills Centre prepares for
Instrumentation Apprentice

Training Accreditation

The Sappi Skills Centre is applying for Instrumentation Skills Development
Provider (SDP) Accreditation by the QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and
Occupations).

In preparation for the application, Saiccor apprentices
have begun working on building the equipment for the
relevant training that will be conducted at the Skills
Centre for Instrument Apprentices from all our
Sappi mills in South Africa comprising of Sappi Stanger,
Tugela, Ngodwana and Saiccor Mills.

The training equipment is being configured and wired
by our apprentices in line with the QCTO guidelines,
giving them exposure to design and project work.

Currently, the Instrument Apprentices are being trained
externally with the forward view that from January 2022
they will be trained in-house at the Sappi Skills Centre
which will give us a potential saving of ZAR67,000 per
Instrument apprentice per phase. This four-year
programme includes three phases of training, prep and
trade tests wherein the individual qualifies as an
Instrument Mechanician.

Upon successful completion of the occupational
knowledge, practical and workplace learning, the Skills
Development Act requires the incumbent to pass an
assessment (Trade Test), wherein the individual may be
certified as a qualified artisan.

“We have learnt how the instruments
operate in the electronic loop that we have
built,” says Ryan Wheeler. “This includes
loop testing, wiring of the junction boxes

and calibration of instruments.”

Sphamandla Msomi adds, “The process of assembling
the electro-pneumatic panel is good practice since
most instruments are included, and we are getting the
hands-on experience.”

“This project has given us the knowledge and confidence, and
I’m glad to be a part of this experience.” - Sphamandla Msomi

• The responsible party reasonably requires the record containing the personal information for lawful

purposes;
• The retention of the record containing the personal information is required by a contract between the

Owing to various legislative requirements, documents should be retained for a certain number of
years, depending on legislation. Click here to view examples of retention periods or go to

Phase Two vaccinations:

Who, what and why?

Phase Two of the national vaccination programme will target people over 60, as
well as the remaining health care workers not vaccinated during the first phase.
Here are some questions answered:

QWe were classified as essential workers during Lockdown
Level 05 and we continued to work. Why do we not qualify
for vaccination right now?
The Department of Health is vaccinating according to a risk-based
matrix, irrespective of whether a person is an essential worker. The
vaccination process started with health care workers (HCW), as
their exposure is very high.

A total of 380,000 HCW have been vaccinated through the Sisonke trial Phase Two
and have all received the J&J vaccine. The Sisonke trial ended on vaccinations have
