Dr. Nor Badrul Anuar Bin Juma't visited BMRS on 17 July 2022. He and his group were taken to the entire station area to see the facilities available, especially involving the area of UMCCed students who will register for the program on 24 July 2022. They also had the opportunity to visit the BMRS laboratories and recommended that a marine science diploma program could be implemented here. The PNC advised IOES to hold diploma courses in collaboration with the UMCCED so that all the facilities at the station can be used optimally. The delegation of the UM Sports Center was taken to the entire station to see the facilities available at the station including the convenience of hostels at the station. The proposed location is on Melawi beach opposite the station. The estimated number of participants who will participate in this program is 200 people from MNS members and also cocurricular centers. This workshop was sponsored by FIO-UM Joint Center of Marine Science and Technology, and SCAR’s Tropical Antarctic Teleconnection group. Dr Cheah Wee (IOES Senior Lecturer) was appointed as facilitator for this workshop. The workshop was attended by 22 local participants represented by final year undergraduates, postgraduates, and lecturers, as a capacity building activity for researchers. It also provides opportunities for establishing new research networks among researchers. Researchers usually need to display the research results either through illustrations in scientific journals or as posters. Most of the software used to generate illustrations are commercial products that require payment. Therefore, free software like GMT is very important to UM and national researchers so that the sharing of research results is not affected. The workshop promote UM’s expertise, attracting potential post-graduate students and research collaborators. Issue 8 11

He also had the opportunity to spend one night in the BMRS dormitory to monitor the current situation at BMRS at night. Damage to the phase I fence, the low phase II fence, and the dark road condition at BMRS due to damage to the street lights, all of which are at high risk of theft/invasion cases, have been raised to the security director by BMRS and BMRS security. As a result, the BMRS security staff has been tasked with patrolling more frequently. In addition, the BMRS took action to install solar-powered lights and spotlights throughout the BMRS yard. The BMRS has energised the UM education carnival day by hosting an IOES booth exhibition. The primary goal of this exhibition is to raise awareness of BMRS facilities and research activities in the community. Furthermore, IOES researchers' research findings are made public so that the community can become more conscious and appreciative of the environment. The IOES booth exhibition activities on the day of the UM education carnival went perfectly thanks to the efforts of all the staff at BMRS, and they were well received by many. All objectives for the implementation of the IOES booth exhibition have been achieved. This workshop includes 10 oral presentations on global plastic issues, especially related to the influence of plastic pollution from the Pacific region to the polar regions, the problem of plastic pollution from the aspects of science, policy and governance, followed by a round table discussion. The training course was attended by 10 participants consisting of Department of Fisheries, Brunei Darussalam, UM postgraduate students and industrial training students at BMRS . The training course includes identification of HAB species through microscopy using a fluorescence microscope in practise, basic molecular techniques and DNA isolation are practiced and nucleotide sequencing analysis.
