Dr. Harrington is the Lancaster University Chair, Task Force on Plastic Pollution and the Executive Director, Centre for Global Governance and Emerging Law. 1 0 J U L Y 2 0 2 3 JOINT SEMINAR The purpose of this seminar was to highlight the significance of the Plastic Treaty in an efficient ocean governance system, particularly with regard to the preservation of the marine environment, and to report on the developments in the talks and negotiations leading up to the treaty ' s acceptance. Researchers and students interested in governance and policy concerns were effectively drawn to this seminar. 3

They had a discussion about research collaboration with Dr Cheah Wee (Head of Earth Observation and Climate Change Unit) and his postgraduate students. IOES UM-IOCAS JOINT SYMPOSIUM - COMBATING HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS (HABS) IN THE REGION +603-7967 4640 [email protected] https://ioes.um.edu.my IOES BULLETIN (ISSUE 10) 1 6 A U G 2 0 2 3 SYMPOSIUM The symposium was held on August 16, 2023, the event brought together the collective expertise of IOCAS and IOES in a concerted effort to address the environmental challenge of Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). Esteemed representatives from both organizations came forward to share their latest research findings and the technological advancements they ' ve pioneered in this field. Besides that, members from the Department of Fisheries and universities such as UIA, UMT, and UNIMAS also attended as participants, contributing to the wealth of knowledge, and expanding the collaborative potential to address this critical issue. OBJECTIVES To share expert knowledge from IOCAS and IOES on addressing HABs in aquatic environments. 1. To discuss the dynamics of HABs, including how they interact with biotic and abiotic environmental factors. 2. To present state-of-the-art technologies used in the early detection of HABs. 3. To showcase the application of technologies designed to control HABs and reduce their impact on the environment. 4. To conduct a live demonstration of HAB mitigation and control technologies 5. 7
IOES UM-IOCAS JOINT SYMPOSIUM - COMBATING HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS (HABS) IN THE REGION +603-7967 4640 [email protected] https://ioes.um.edu.my IOES BULLETIN (ISSUE 10) 1 6 A U G 2 0 2 3 SYMPOSIUM Meanwhile, speakers from IOCAS, including Prof. Dr. Caiwen Li, Prof. Zhiming Yu, Prof. Ying Zhong Tang, and Prof. Dr. Nansheng Chen, offered an in-depth understanding of current HABs research in China. They introduced a technology called the "HAB Extinguisher, " specifically designed to control and mitigate the effects of HABs, aiming to reduce their ecological impact. From IOES, AP Dr. Po Teen Lim, Dr. Kieng Soon Hii, AP Dr. Chui Pin Leaw, and Dr. Monaliza Mohd Din, delivered comprehensive insights into the current state of HABs research in Malaysia. Their presentations delved into the detection and dynamics of HABs, highlighting the crucial role of early detection technologies in preventing significant harm to marine farming and mitigating broader environmental effects caused by these blooms. Outcome The symposium acted as a critical nexus for knowledge exchange, engaging not only IOCAS and IOES but also members from the Department of Fisheries, UMT, UIA, and UNIMAS. These institutions came together to share their latest research and strategies for tackling Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). A standout contribution from IOCAS was the introduction of the "HAB Extinguisher, " an innovative technology with the potential to significantly reduce the ecological impact of these blooms. The event facilitated networking and fostered cross-institutional and international collaborations. It also emphasized the importance of raising public awareness and imparting education about HABs, highlighting the need for sustainable practices to prevent such environmental challenges. 8
VISIT BY THE INSTITUTE OF OCEANOLOGY, CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES (IOCAS), CHINA +603-7967 4640 [email protected] https://ioes.um.edu.my IOES BULLETIN (ISSUE 10) A group of seven researchers from the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS), China have made an official scientific visit to IOES on 18 August 2023 to establish an initial cooperation framework. In addition, this visit also aimed to discuss plans and roadmaps for preparations for the UNESCO-IOC training course supported by the GlobalHAB Program in 2024. SEMINAR ON HAB MITIGATION - COMBATING HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOMS (HABS) IN THE REGION +603-7967 4640 [email protected] https://ioes.um.edu.my IOES BULLETIN (ISSUE 10) A seminar organized by IOES titled 'Seminar oh HAB Mitigation - Combating Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in the Region ' by Prof. Dr. Zhiming Yu and Prof. Associate Dr. Isaac Y. Yuan from the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS), China was held on 18 August 2023 at the Anggerik Room, Advanced Studies Complex, Universiti Malaya. The same seminar was also held online through the Microsoft Teams platform on 19 August 2023. This seminar focused specifically on PCM-HAB aspects, including the application and implementation of HAB control technology to effectively reduce and minimize the effects of HAB. A video demonstration of modified clay technology in controlling HABs was also presented. Prof. Dr. Faming Wang delivered a lecture entitled "Coastal Blue Carbon in China: nature-based solution towards carbon neutrality " , Prof. Associate Dr. Zhe Lu with the title "Blue carbon sink capacity of mangroves determined by leaves and their associated microbiome " and Dr. Guoming Qin with the title "Mangrove stem methane emissions significantly offset global blue carbon sequestration ". Thank You for you services Mrs. Nor Hayati Mahbob, Administrative Assistant (Clerical/Operations) served more than 8 years at IOES (since May 2015). She then transferred to the Academic Administration and Services Department (AASD). Dr. Ng Fong Lee, IOES Research Fellow began her career at IOES, UM on 6 February 2017 as Postdoctoral Research Fellow and was promoted to Senior Research Fellow on 6 February 2019. Her expertise covers Biophysics Science and focused on various biophotovoltaic (BPV) platforms utilizing algae, which are then used to harvest solar energy and generate electricity. Currently, Dr. Ng is working at Taylor’s University as a senior lecturer. We appreciate your years of service to IOES. We wish you the very best of luck on your future exciting adventure. Congratulations to Professor Dato' Dr. Azizan Abu Samah on being conferred with the title of Professor Emeritus by the Universiti Malaya for his contribution in the research of weather and climate and its impact on the environment in the polar region and the tropics during the 63rd Universiti Malaya Convocation Ceremony 2023 on 26 November 2023. Dr Fiona Keng Seh Lin has been invited to deliver the Biogeosciences Section’s Kamide Lecture at the 20th Anniversary Annual Meeting of the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS2023) which took place from 30 July to 04 August, 2023 at SUNTEC Singapore. Prof Dr Lim Phaik Eem and her team (Emeritus Prof Dr Phang Siew Moi, Dr Poong Sze Wan, Dr Soong Sze Looi and Dr Tan Ji) has been presented with Science and Technology Award of RM30,000 in recognition of their outsatnading achievement in the field of Molecular Phylogenetics and Systematics which have contributed to the progress and development of Science and Technology in Malaysia. This award was presented by Malaysia Toray Science Foundation (MTSF) on 24 Oct 2023.
