WORKSHOPThe “Antibiotics, Mycoviruses, and Fungal Interactions” workshop was a three-day scientific eventexploring the complex relationships between antibiotics, viral infections, and fungi. The programcombined engaging lectures and hands-on laboratory sessions, providing participants with boththeoretical knowledge and practical skills. The workshop took place at the National AntarcticResearch Centre (NARC), Universiti Malaya. Lectures were held in the CUBE Room, while alllaboratory activities were conducted in the Mycology Laboratory. Participants came from both localand international institutions, including postgraduate and undergraduate students, academic staff,and representatives from research and industry sectors.ANTIBIOTICS, MYCOVIRUSES, ANDFUNGAL INTERACTIONS: A SCIENTIFICWORKSHOPThe event was well-received, with interactive Q&A sessionsfollowing each lecture. According to Dr. Paul Rowley, one ofthe workshop highlights included successful demonstrationof killer toxin screening methods using environmental yeastisolates including Malaysian samples and reference strains.Participants learned to extract and visualize doublestranded RNA (dsRNA) from fungal cultures. Several groupssuccessfully obtained visible dsRNA bands using agarosegel electrophoresis. Dr. Baya Nor Azura guided participantsin microscopy and yeast culture techniques, emphasizingmorphology-based identification and culturing practices.The workshop was well-received, with active engagementduring both the lectures and lab sessions. The two-day workshop involving lectures anddata analysis session conducted by aninvited speaker from Hong Kong University ofScience and Technology (HKUST), DrMasayuki Ushio, who is a renowned expert inthe field of environmental DNA application.During the first day of the workshop, DrUshio gave an overview of eDNA, currentstatus of aquatic eDNA studies and how todesign an eDNA study. This was followed byan overview of the bioinformatics analysis ofeDNA sequencing data. Kuala Selangor Nature Park29JUNE2025The ‘Climate Change Mitigation Programme: Nature-Based Solution for GreenhouseGas Monitoring’ was held on 29 June 2025 at the Kuala Selangor Nature Park. Thisprogramme was organized to raise public awareness and demonstrate the importanceof nature-based solutions (NBS) in climate change mitigation. The event was anoutreach and environmental engagement programme involving mangrove replanting atKuala Selangor Nature Park. The activity was attended by over 30 people comprisingIOES staff and postgraduate students, and Kuala Selangor Nature Park volunteers(including Sea Scouts and park visitors). Coincidentally, researchers from LeibnizCentre for Tropical Marine Research (ZMT), Germany were also present as park visitors,managed to joined in the re-planting activity. About 80 mangrove seedlings wereplanted in a designated area for mangrove re-planting. Several staff from UM corporatecommunication center were also present to document and video shoot the activity andconducted some interviews with participants.Before the planting activity began, Associate Professor Dr. Mohammed Rizman Ididgave a brief introduction of IOES. He explained on why we need to enhanceenvironmental education, community engagement in scientific research, andcontributed to the establishment of a field site for long-term greenhouse gasmonitoring. A poster about mangrove blue carbon research in IOES, specifically by theUM Blue Carbon Co-op (UMBCC) was also presented. It was foundedby a group of environmentally committedstudents with the aim of raising awarenessabout the vital role of fungi in ecosystemsthrough field activities, educationalworkshops, and creative knowledgesharing on social media.
