Fiesta 2017

MESSAGE
My warm and heartfelt greetings to everyone who share our joy in the
celebration of our annual town fiesta in honor our beloved patrona, Our Lady of
Sorrows.
On this special day, we come together in prayer and thanksgiving for the many
blessings that we have received in the past year and we continue to pray for more
blessings in the years ahead, in our lives as well as those of our family and friends.
It is in our meditation of our Blessed Mother’s Seven Sorrows, as expressed in
our 9-day Novenario that we are reminded of our Blessed Mother’s total obedience to
the will of God in her life. That in the midst of problems and sorrows, it is the
unfailing love of God through Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, that triumphs in the
end.
We celebrate this fiesta with fervent hope that with Our Lady of Sorrows’
intercession and guidance, our beloved Pinabacdao will continue its march to
progress, benefiting everyone.
Salamat han iyo pagbisita! Salamat han iyo mga pag-ampo! Salamat hinigugma
namon nga Patrona!
Maupay nga patron ha aton ngatanan!

Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows

PINABACDAO
Feast Day: May 10
Establishment of Parish: 1957

Pinabacdao was originally settled in the 1730s by a group of Boholanos who were fleeing the Moro raids.
They established their community in Machahiguin Beach now called Binongtuan having found the place
ideal for fishing and farming.

In the 19th century, it became a pueblo. There is no exact date of its establishment but an 1834 document
mentioned Pinabacdao as a pueblo. By 1883, it was one of the 40 pueblos in Samar Island. While other
pueblos had priests assigned to administer the spiritual needs of its citizens, no permanent priest was
assigned in Pinabacdao. It was placed under the spiritual administration of Calbiga, another pueblo.

During the Philippine-American War in 1900 to 1902, Pinabacdao including its church was reduced to
ashes. One of the few valuables rescued from the burning church was the statue of the beloved Patrona,
the Nuestra Senora de los Dolores.

On October 23, 1903, Republic Act No. 960 was passed by the Philippines Commission which combined
the pueblos of Calbiga and Pinabacdao into the Municipality of Calbiga, making Pinabacdao a barrio of
Calbiga. On July 16, 1946 however, Pinabacdao was declared a separate Municipality by President
Manuel Roxas through Executive Order No. 2.

Already a municipality, the spiritual needs of Pinabacdaoanons continued to be served by the Parish
Priest of Calbiga. It was not until September 15, 1957 when the Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows was
created by Bishop Miguel F. Acebedo with Fr. Uldarico Villasin as its first Parish Priest. When the
Diocese of Borongan was created in 1960, Pinabacdao was placed under its jurisdiction. It was
eventually transferred to the Diocese of Calbayog in 1975 where it remains until today.

The administration of a succession of parish priests in Our Lady of Sorrows Parish saw the building of
the new church and rectory. Pinabacdaoanons on their part provided their support by generously
sharing their time, talent and treasure.

Other Pinabacdaoanons have chosen to serve God by following the priestly and religious vocation.

Among the young men who responded to the call of priesthood, three are from Pinabacdao. Rev. Fr.
Ronjie Raquil was ordained 55 years after the late Msgr. Anastacio D. Labutin became the first priest of
Pinabacdao. Recently, another Pinabacdaoanon, Rev. Fr. Aldon Funcion was ordained in a solemn
ceremony in Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Church.

Our parish is likewise blessed with the vocations of a number of Pinabacdaoanon women who entered
the religious life. Sister Anita L. Ocenar is a member of the Franciscan Missionaries of Charity. Sister
Hope Tabones Trangia is a Franciscan Immaculatine Sister. We also have two Religious of the Virgin
Mary (RVM) sisters, the late Sister Maria Mercy Ty, RVM and Sister Consolacion Tabones Aboy, RVM who
is currently based in Manila.

As a parish community, we offer our prayers in thanksgiving for the gift of these Pinabacdaoanons who
served and continue to serve God in their own parishes and religious communities.

It is the constant prayer of our parish that we continue to build a vibrant Catholic community now and in
the years to come.

“VIA MATRIS MADRE DOLOROSA”
(The Way of the Sorrowful Mother)

Our Lady of Sorrows, also known as the Sorrowful Mother, Mother of Sorrows,
Our Lady of Piety, Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows or Our Lady of the Seven
Dolours are names by which the Blessed Virgin Mary is referred to in relation
to sorrows in her life.

The Seven Sorrows of Mary are a popular Roman Catholic devotion. In common
religious Catholic imagery, the Blessed Virgin Mary is portrayed in a sorrowful
and lacrimating affect, with seven daggers piercing her heart, often bleeding.

The first altar to the Mater Dolorosa ever recorded was in 1221 at the monastery
of Schönau, Germany. In 1233, seven youths in Tuscany founded the Servite Order (also known as the
"Servite Friars", or the "Order of the Servants of Mary"). Five years later, they took up the sorrows of Mary,
standing under the Cross, as the principal devotion of their order. Over the centuries several devotions, and
even orders, arose around meditation on Mary's Sorrows in particular.

The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows is liturgically celebrated each 15 of September. A feast of Friday of
Sorrows is also observed with the praying of the Holy Rosary throughout the year, and here in Pinabacdao,
under the leadership of the Hermana Mayor. The Seven Sorrows (or Dolors) are events in the life of the
Blessed Virgin Mary that are a popular devotion. It is a common devotion for Catholics to say daily one Our
Father and seven Hail Mary’s

These Seven Sorrows should not be confused with the five Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary.
1. The Prophecy of Saint Simeon. (Luke 2:34–35)
2. The escape and Flight into Egypt. (Matthew 2:13)
3. The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple of Jerusalem. (Luke 2:43–45)
4. The Meeting of Mary and Jesus on the Via Dolorosa.
5. The Crucifixion of Jesus on Mount Calvary. (John 19:25)
6. The Piercing of the Side of Jesus, and His Descent from the Cross. (Matthew 27:57–59)
7. The Burial of Jesus by Joseph of Arimathea. (John 19:40–42)

“At the Cross her station keeping, stood the mournful Mother weeping, close to her Son to the last,” says the first line of the
Stabat Mater, a 13th century Marian hymn, which has become a classical song to the Mater Dolorosa or Our Lady of Sorrows.
Suppressed, along with many other liturgical and devotional sequences, by the Council of Trent, Stabat Mater was restored by Pope
Benedict XIII in 1727 for the Feast of the Seven Dolours of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a feast that Catholics celebrate on the 15th of
September. It portrays Mary, a woman of courage and great strength standing by the cross of her Son Jesus who was about to breath
his last. Listening to the hymn, one would realize that Jesus’ pain and suffering were also the Blessed Virgin’s own suffering and pain.

Mary never left her beloved Son alone, in moments of joy and in moments of suffering as well. She remained true to her
promise to God that she would be the mother of God’s only Son. As a loving and caring mother, she endured all hurts,
disappointments, and suffering that her Son also endured.

Her image as a sorrowful mother is not a show of defeat or cowardice. Instead, it is a manifestation of deep faith and profound
trust in the Father. Her strength to withstand all sufferings could only come from a deep relationship with God who knows what is
best for us.

Like Mary there are moments in our lives where we are confronted with sorrow and pain. There are occasions where we feel
helpless in the midst of suffering and defeat. The Blessed Mother shows us that we can withstand any storm or tribulation in life if
we have a deep faith and profound trust in God who loves us and who looks upon us with mercy. Mary knew that the mercy of God
was at work in her life and in the life of her Son, Jesus. It is that belief in the mercy of God that kept her strong until that day when
finally, her Son Jesus was resurrected from the dead.

Let us pray to the Blessed Virgin Mary that she may always guide us as we continue our pilgrimage to the house of the God of
Mercy, may she, who is the Mother of Mercy, inspire us to have a deep and profound faith and trust in the mercy of God. Let us pray
to her to inspire us to accompany others to have that same faith and trust in the Lord. Ave Maria!

Las Estrellas

A tradition that begun several years ago in this parish, the Hermana Mayor, upon the advice of the Parish
Priest, select a number of ladies from among her relatives and friends to act as matrons of honor in the
celebration of the town fiesta. They are expected to be in formal attire during important functions of the
fiesta such as the evening vespers that is normally followed by Merienda Cena and on the Fiesta itself,
the procession of the Patrona, the Pontifical Mass and at the banquet tendered by the Hermana Mayor at
noon on that day. Seven of these ladies are selected to as official bearers of the estandartes of the Seven
Sorrows during the procession.

Prayer to our Sorrowful Mother for a particular grace

O, mother most holy and sorrowful, Queen of Martyrs, you who stood by your Son as He agonized on the
cross; by the sufferings of your life, by that sword of pain that pierced your heart, by your perfect joy in
heaven, look down on me kindly as I kneel before you, sympathizing with your sorrows and offering you my
petition with childlike trust.

Dear Mother, since your Son refuses you nothing, please ask of His Sacred Heart to mercifully grant what I
ask, through the merits of His sacred passion, along with those of your sufferings at the foot of the cross.

Mother most merciful, to whom shall I go in my misery if not to you who pity us poor sinful exiles in this valley
of tears? In our name, offer Jesus but one drop of His most precious blood, but one pang of His loving heart.
Remind Him that you are our sweetness, our life and our hope, and your prayer will be heard. Amen.
