फे डरेशन ऑफ इंडडयन स्पाइस स्टेकहोल्डसस- NEWSLETTER – THE SPICE AROMA VOL 2/ISSUE 8 JANUARY 2024 Theme of the year 2023-24 “Creating synergy between Farmers, Traders and Govt” 13 REPORT ON JEERA, DHANIYA AND TURMERIC - KEDIA ADVISORY SERVICES Jeera Jeera, a staple spice in Indian cuisine, has witnessed a notable shift in its price trend, marked by a significant drop of around 27.08% within a month. This downturn can be attributed to a doubling of the area under jeera cultivation, as revealed by current trends. The expansive cultivation, notably in Rajasthan and Gujarat, has seen a surge of 103% in sown areas, potentially impacting other crops like coriander. According to data from the Rajasthan Agriculture Department, jeera cultivation has expanded to 6.51 lh by December 13, a considerable increase from the previous year's 5.62 lh. Similarly, Gujarat has witnessed a remarkable growth of almost 103%, covering 530,030.00 hectares compared to the previous year's 261,635.00 hectares as of December 18, 2023. Despite this surge in production, jeera exports during Apr-Oct 2023 dropped by 34.02%, with October alone experiencing a 13.39% decline. The festival and marriage season demand are expected to provide some support to jeera prices, although the focus remains on weather conditions and yield, especially with the looming threat of El Nino. The India Meteorological Department's prediction of above-normal temperatures during the winter season, coupled with the ongoing impact of El Nino globally, raises concerns. However, a shift to neutral ENSO conditions in the Pacific Ocean during India's subsequent monsoon season offers optimism for agricultural success. Recent arrivals data for jeera from November 1 to November 30, 2023, shows a 10.15% increase compared to the previous month. Looking ahead, the 2023-24 scenario indicates a substantial 79.43% surge in production, reaching 103.09 lakh bags. Despite a 20% reduction in imports, domestic consumption has risen by 22.22%, indicating a preference for domestically produced jeera. However, the significant 35.96% dip in exports and a soaring closing stock by 101.12% suggest a surplus that could influence future pricing dynamics. The current price of jeera stands at 28200, indicating an upward trend. This suggests that, as of the given date, market forces are driving the price of jeera higher. The first support level, noted at 26500, serves as a reference point for potential price stabilization. If market conditions weaken, this level might act as a support, preventing a further decline. Looking ahead, the projections for the next 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year indicate an anticipated increase in jeera prices. The support levels of 36000, 42500, and 48000 for these respective periods suggest a bullish sentiment in the market. Dhaniya The Dhaniya (coriander) market has undergone a significant shift in price trends recently, with prices experiencing an 8.19% decline in the past month, despite ongoing increases in both domestic and overseas demand. Gujarat, a key coriander-producing state, reported a staggering 48% reduction in coriander sowing, with only 108,194 hectares sown compared to the previous year's 207,455 hectares. Conversely, Rajasthan reported a positive uptick in sowing, with an 11.54% increase, reaching 47,253 hectares, as of December 11, 2023. The annual production of Dhaniya for the year 2022-23 was a substantial 948 thousand MT, marking a significant increase from the 735 thousand MT recorded in the previous fiscal year. This surge in production, while contributing to meeting demand, has exerted a bearish influence on the spot market, resulting in the observed price decline. Despite the domestic market's challenges, Dhaniya exports have shown resilience. In October, exports increased by 2.20%, and in the April-October 2023 period, they skyrocketed by 271.85% compared to the same period in 2022. However, the import side of the equation tells a different story, with Dhaniya imports dropping by 96.80% in October and down by 42.26% in the April-October 2023 period compared to the same timeframe in 2022. Anticipated factors such as festival and marriage season demand are expected to act as mitigating factors, limiting the fall in Dhaniya prices. Additionally, the Indian Meteorological Department's (IMD) prediction of above-normal temperatures during the winter season could impact production dynamics. In the larger context of the 2023-24 scenario, Dhaniya production has witnessed a significant decline of 27.85%, dropping from 224.8 to 162.2 lakh bags. Domestic consumption has remained stable, but exports have seen a substantial downturn, contributing to a 35.69% decrease in closing stock, which currently stands at 36.4 lakh bags. The Current Price for Dhaniya (coriander) market indicates an upward trend with the current price at 7220. Projections foresee positive momentum over the next three months (9200), six months (9800), and one year (11000). This optimistic outlook may be influenced by increased demand, supply constraints, and seasonal factors. Market participants should monitor variables like weather conditions and geopolitical factors for a comprehensive understanding of future price dynamics. Turmeric The turmeric market is currently navigating through a series of dynamic shifts, with its price trend witnessing significant fluctuations driven by a multitude of factors. Over the past month, turmeric prices have surged by approximately 13.43%, a surge attributed to a substantial decline in seeding activity for the '24 crop, estimated to be down by 20-25% year on year. Early projections for the 2024 crop reveal a 25-30% reduction, primarily due to less sowing and an uneven distribution of monsoon rains. The influence of El Nino has led to considerable regional fluctuations, with some areas experiencing wetter conditions than others. Data from the Second Advance Estimates
फे डरेशन ऑफ इंडडयन स्पाइस स्टेकहोल्डसस- NEWSLETTER – THE SPICE AROMA VOL 2/ISSUE 8 JANUARY 2024 Theme of the year 2023-24 “Creating synergy between Farmers, Traders and Govt” 14 and the third advance projections of the Telangana State Government indicate a noteworthy decrease in annual turmeric production, dropping from 1222 thousand MT in 2021-22 to 1130 thousand MT in 2022-23. Despite facing drier-than-normal weather in October, major turmeric-producing states have reported satisfactory crop progress. Turmeric arrivals in November exhibited a substantial increase, totaling 12,412.79 MT compared to the previous month's 6,519.34 MT. In contrast, September 2023 witnessed a 35.06% decline in turmeric exports compared to the previous year, standing at 9,085.81 tonnes. The Ministry of Agriculture further announced the suspension of fresh turmeric rhizome imports. Adding to the market complexity are weather-related worries. Unfavorable conditions in the northern and southern parts due to Cyclone Michaung have raised concerns about the crop's prospects. Additionally, the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) of the US has forecasted that El Nino, which leads to drought and prolonged dry periods in Asia, will peak between November 2023 and January 2024, possibly continuing until AprilJune 2024. Analyzing the 2023-24 scenario, turmeric production has declined by 14%, and closing stocks have plummeted by a significant 48.32%. While there is a slight decrease in imports by 15.79%, domestic consumption has marginally increased by 1.15%. On the positive side, the export sector exhibits a 2.92% rise in exports, reflecting a certain level of resilience in the market. The current turmeric price stands at 14,180, indicating an upward trend, with support levels at 12,000. Projections for the next 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year suggest prices reaching 16,500, 18,500, and 21,000, respectively. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ProIntellitrade Services LLP Pro Intellitrade Services LLP.
