Tips to choosing the right door hardware
If you're in the process of hiring an architect, contractor, or home
improvement specialist and they're discussing your new door installation, it's
important to know what types of hardware are available. There are quite a
few options, but we've narrowed it down to three most popular styles-
Panic hardware: A deadbolt lock that can be bolted from the inside so that
a person can lock themselves safely inside their home. This is helpful if there
is an intruder or fire breaking into your home.
LCN door closers: Door closers are mechanisms on a door that close it
when pressure is applied at the handle. This helps to prevent someone from
leaving your home without your knowledge or consent. The most common
place for this is the garage, which is used to prevent intruders from entering
your home.
HES electric strikes: An electric strike is electrical components that are
located on the door that help prevent anyone from being able to enter your
home. This can be used in an emergency situation where a fire breaks out
and you need to quickly exit your home.
Doors and locking hardware are an integral part of a home’s security. The
right pieces will keep burglars out and your family in, but the wrong ones will
leave you regretting the day you bought it.
Knob Locks: These locks typically only come with a keyhole and operate
with an interior knob that is turned to get in or out of the house; they don’t
have any locking mechanism on the outside (so they cannot be opened from
either side).
Deadbolts: These locks have the same keyhole as a knob lock, but are
slightly more secure and often come with some sort of bolt to hold the lock
closed. They also operate with an interior knob (like most knobs) but its
position underneath the exterior door allows it to be operated from either
direction.
Schlage Door Handlesets: These locks are mounted on the outside corner
of your door and feature deadbolt protection or an automatic pedestrian
recognition system that makes them difficult to kick in so you don’t have to
worry about leaving them unlocked all the time.
When choosing your hardware, make sure to get the right one for your door.
Be sure that your new lock is going to fit the door that you already have, or
else you’ll need to install a new one. If you’re getting a set, make sure it
includes everything you need, including deadbolts and other accessories.
Consider what type of lock you want on both sides of the door (some allows
for two knobs on the inside and others allow for a deadbolt) so you can make
sure there will be enough hardware when they are installed at the same
time.
