WU International Connect March 2024 Walailak Research Convention 2024 to be Held from 27th to 29th of March, Celebrating 32nd Anniversary of Walailak University Walailak University (WU), led by the Research and Innovation Institute of Excellence, is set to hold its annual public forum - Walailak Research Convention 2024 (WRC2024) from the 27th to 29th of March at Walailak University, celebrating 32 years of the university on the 29th of March. WRC has been held during the foundation week of Walailak University for three consecutive years, since 2022, with the aim of being a platform for the facilitation of knowledge exchange and the presentation of advancements in academics and research among a wide array of participants, including researchers, local operational agencies, entrepreneurs, the public, and students. This year, WRC is held in a hybrid format with the theme "Roles of Higher Education in the Turbulent World". On the 27th, the opening ceremony will take place at 9.00 AM at the Pattamaporn Chamber of WU Hospital. It will commence with a welcoming speech from WU President Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, followed by opening remarks by Associate Professor Patamawadee Pochanukul, Director of Thailand Science Research and Innovation; and the Keynote Speech by Professor Chris Rudd OBE, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Head of Campus, James Cook University, Singapore. The plenary discussion which emphasizes on digital economy, carbon neutrality, and enhancing the quality of life will also take place on the same day in the afternoon. WU International Connect March 2024 6 Walailak Research Convention 2024 Commences, Highlighting Role of Universities in Enhancing Quality of Life in Turbulent Times On March 27, 2024, Walailak Research Convention 2024, an annual international research conference hosted by Walailak University, has commenced to celebrate the university's 32nd anniversary. The event, themed "Roles of Higher Education in the Turbulent World," took place at the Pattarathammaporn Chamber, Walailak University Hospital. The convention opened with a welcoming video from President Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, highlighting the university's commitment to advancing research and delivering high-quality education as a Global and Frontier Research University, as categorized by Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (MHESI). He provided updates on the university's recent achievements, including its rankings in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2024 at 1201+, and the recent achievement of the 2023 Excellence Award for Internationally High-caliber Research from MHESI. WU International Connect March 2024 7 Walailak University Achieves MHESI’s 2023 Outstanding Award for Internationally Highcaliber Research Today, Walailak University, led by President Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong and Vice President Associate Professor Dr. Suwit Wuthisuthimethavee, received the 2023 outstanding award for excellence in internationally high-caliber research from the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (MHESI). The prestigious event took place at the Eternity Ballroom, Pullman Bangkok King Power Hotel. The university received accolades from Ms. Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister of MHESI, who presented the award, acknowledging Walailak University as one of the three Thai universities honored for outstanding research on this occasion. The recognition was a result of MHESI's 2023 Thai university research evaluation initiative, aimed at fostering globally high-caliber research production and cultivating a robust and sustainable research ecosystem within leading members of the Global and Frontier Research University group. The initiative focused on three key areas: 1) empowerment of national research capacity, 2) highly competitive world-class research, and 3) cultivation and enrichment of the research ecosystem. Presenting Walailak University's accomplishments on December 27, 2023, Associate Professor Dr. Udomsak Saengow, Director of WU Research and Innovation Institute of Excellence, highlighted the university's achievements in four key areas: the rapid 5-year growth of high-impact research publications in tier 1 of Q1 Scopus-indexed journals, a surge in citation volume, an increase in external research funding, and a rise in the number of qualified personnel engaged in recognized global entities. Under President Sombat Thamrongthanyawong's leadership, Walailak University has demonstrated remarkable progress in research from 2018 to 2022. Scopus-indexed journal publications, particularly in quartiles 1 and 2, have quadrupled to 738 papers, showing an annual growth of 45%. Tier 1 publications have seen an average annual increase of 56%. Total citations and research grant funding have both risen by 22% and 5% annually, respectively. In 2023, five Walailak researchers gained recognition in Stanford University's World's Top 2 Percent Scientists List, placing among 200,000 highly cited scientists globally. The university also improved its standing in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, moving from the 1501+ category to the band of 1201-1500 for the second consecutive year. In the category of Young University (50 years or younger), it achieved a joint third-place in Thailand or 501+ globally, marking a significant milestone as a first-time accomplishment.


WU International Connect March 2024 8 Walailak University Organized a merit-making ceremony for the good fortune of 3 religions on the occasion of the 32nd anniversary of the founding of Walailak University, including a rice alms-giving ceremony—dried food for 30 monks. The monks chanted Buddhist mantras. The Imam asks for prayers from Islam, and Christian leaders lead prayers and ask for blessings. WU International Connect March 2024 Students, teachers, and personnel of the International College, Walailak University, participated in academic service activities at “Kiriwong Village” 14 On March 8th, 2567 (Thai calendar, equivalent to March 8th, 2024), Dr.Chengxiang Ma , the head of the project "Unveiling the Gems of Khiriwong: Empower Social Enterprises," led students along with faculty members and staff to visit the Khiriwong community in Kamloen Subdistrict, Lansaka District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The purpose was to allow students to learn about social enterprise practices from entrepreneurs, as well as to immerse them in the local culture of the Khiriwong community. Moreover, they could apply the knowledge gained from the activities to their future academic studies and careers. The details of the activities included participating in tie-dye cloth making, engaging with the local leaf group in the Khiriwong community, studying Thai cooking methods at Passion Resort, providing advice for businesses to cater to international customers, and visiting the Khiriwong community and Khiriwong waterfall.

Currently, the university has extended the duration of cooperative education from the previous four months to eight months to ensure that partner businesses benefit in terms of work, knowledge creation, and collaborative research. Importantly, students and faculty have the opportunity to learn together with companies and businesses, preparing for future work. "I would like to express my gratitude to all business executives who recognize the importance and collaborate to support the production of quality graduates through the cooperative education process. This event, WU Coop Day, reaffirms the strong cooperation between the university and businesses and contributes to producing competitive professionals capable of competing internationally," said Professor Dr. Sombat. Assistant Professor Dr. Padungsak Suksa-Ard added, "The goal of organizing WU Coop Day is to honor and promote stakeholders involved in the development of cooperative education at Walailak University. It fosters cooperation between quality businesses and the university, providing an opportunity for Walailak University students to interact and exchange information with reputable businesses." During the event, awards were presented to outstanding cooperative education businesses for the year 2024, with three organizations receiving the WU Coop. Best Partnership award for their continuous support of the cooperative education process. Additionally, several businesses set up booths to provide information and recruit students for internships.

WU International Connect March 2024 The Cooperation of WU, Na Mai Phai SAO and Community Leaders in Meeting to Schedule Water Conservation Activity Off University 17 February 16th, 2024, Walailak University (WU), in collaboration with Na Mai Phai Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO), held a meeting to discuss guidelines for organizing activities to raise awareness, promote management, and conserve water resources for people at Na Mai Phai Subdistrict Thung Song District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. During the meeting, basic data, and current problems of living weir were analyzed and utilized as guidelines for developing activities, enhancing the efficiency of management and conserving water resources in the area. This was achieved through the integration of activities to create networks, enhance management efficiency, and conserve water under “The Living Weir for Developing Community to Sustainability (2023) Project,” with Mr. Suthira Thongkao as the project leader. From the aforementioned meeting, a conclusion was drawn regarding the guidelines for organizing activities to support the water conservation off university, relying on cooperation on water security with local, regional, national, and global governments. The activities aim to make the community realize the importance of water management and conservation through training, demonstrations, and practical exercises. A model community will be established, with strong water management and irrigation practices that do not negatively impact the freshwater ecosystem. Furthermore, community members will have sustainable knowledge, understanding, and participation in water management within the community. Also, this activity aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals.)


WU International Connect March 2024 The Committee from the YSC Southern Regional Coordination Center, YSC 2024 Project, Participated in Judging the Final Round of the Project Competition at the Thailand Science Park, Pathum Thani Province. 18 On March 2, 2024, young scientists from all over the country, totaling 63 works from 9 fields, presented their work and competed in the final round of the 26th Young Scientist Competition: YSC2024, at the Thailand Science Park, Pathum Thani Province. Moreover, the Center for Academic Services, acting as the YSC Southern Regional Coordination Center, and lecturers from Walailak University participated as the jury in the YSC project, totaling 3 members. 1. Biology and Biotechnology, BI: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Potjamarn Suraninpong (The School of Agricultural Technology and Food Industry) 2. Earth and Environmental Sciences, ES: Asst. Prof. Dr. Rungruang Janta (The School of Languages and General Education) 3. Mathematics and Statistics, MA: Asst. Prof. Dr. Nopporn Thamrongrat (The School of Science) The final round of the YSC2024 Project took place on March 2nd to 3rd, 2024, at Sirindhorn Science Home (SSH), Thailand Science Park, Pathum Thani Province. There were young scientists who passed the selection of the project proposal selection round from across the country, totaling 63 works. Additionally, the representatives from the southern region presented and competed 8 works from 7 fields, which were regional championship-winning works. They presented their works and answered questions from the jury, consisting of representatives from Walailak University and qualified individuals from the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) on January 26, 2023, at Walailak University. The activities of the YSC project align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG4 Quality Education and SDG17 Partnerships for the Goals. Furthermore, on behalf of the YSC Southern Regional Coordination Center, we extend our gratitude to the judging panel comprising 32 members from 7 Schools who participated in evaluating project proposals, presentation rounds, and providing guidance for project development on January 26, 2024. WU International Connect March 2024 The Center for Academic Services, as the YSC Southern Regional Coordination Center, Jointly Judged and Presented the Award for "Technology and Innovation for Local Problem Solving" During the YSC2024 Final Round Competition 19 On March 3, 2024, Asst. Prof. Dr. Amonsak Sawusdee, the Director of the Center for Academic Services and the Head of YSC Southern Regional Coordination Center, served as a special judge for the 26th Young Scientist Competition (YSC 2024). He adjudicated the Special Awards Competition and presented the award for "Technology and Innovation for Local Problem Solving" during the final round competition at Sirindhorn Science Home (SSH), Thailand Science Park, Pathum Thani Province. The winning project received a grant of 5,000 baht from the YSC Southern Regional Coordination Center. There were 63 projects from 9 fields presented by young scientists from across the country. This event was organized through collaboration between the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), and the YSC Regional Coordination Center at Universities, with support from the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT) and Siam Commercial Bank PCL. The YSC project activities align with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).


WU International Connect March 2024 The Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO) visited the research output of pure red palm oil production technology at Walailak University. 20 The Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO) expedited the study of the potential of biofuel derived from palm oil to reduce compensatory payments from the Oil Fuel Fund. They visited locations in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province and Trang Province to listen to research findings aimed at developing a network of community enterprises producing natural red palm oil at Walailak University. They also visited community enterprises involved in large-scale palm oil plantations in Trang Province, which have advanced research into producing various products that promote health and environmental sustainability. Mr. Wisak Watthanasap, Director of the Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO), disclosed that the OFFO had brought together executives and officials involved in the operation of the biofuel fund to study the research on the production of pure red palm oil. This initiative aimed at developing networks of community enterprises and SMEs engaged in natural red palm oil production and enhancing the economic resilience of Walailak University in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. Additionally, they extended their efforts to palm oil producers in Trang Province, which served as a case study for advancing palm oil production into diverse products by elevating production standards through contemporary technology adoption, reducing reliance on foreign technology, overcoming market oversupply limitations, and exploring potential adjustments for palm oil if the fuel fund compensation is discontinued. According to the Petroleum Fuel Fund Act BE 2562, the gradual reduction of compensation for biofuel-blended fuel payments was mandated by the end of 2022. The initial reduction period was extended until September 24, 2024. As this deadline approaches, on-site studies of how palm oil farmers are adapting will contribute to the data presented to the Petroleum Fuel Fund Management Committee (PFMC) for consideration regarding the pros and cons of extending or discontinuing support for biofuel-blended fuel, taking into account all affected sectors.

WU International Connect March 2024 Walailak University Executives Attend the 19th ASEA-UNINET Plenary Meeting in Penang 22 Walailak University (WU) has recently applied to become a member of the ASEAN-EUROPEAN Academic University Network (ASEA-UNINET). From 26 February to 1 March 2024, the university's executives traveled to Penang, Malaysia, to participate in the 19th ASEA-UNINET Plenary Meeting held at the School of the Arts, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). This university initiative, led by WU Center for International Affairs (CIA), aims to enhance the university's internationalization in education and research, fostering collaborations with member universities in Southeast Asian and European countries. Since its foundation in 1994, ASEA-UNINET has grown to include more than 90 universities from 16 countries. During the event at USM, the WU executive team, consisting of Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President; Associate Professor Dr. Surin Maisrikrod, Vice President; and Assistant Professor Dr. Patnarin Supakorn, Director of CIA, presented Walailak University's achievements in education, research, and collaborations. Kicking start as a new member of ASEA-UNINET, Assistant Professor Dr. Amit Jaisi from WU School of Pharmacy will develop his research project, which received the Ernst Mach Grant from the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science, and Research, and will collaborate with professors from the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Graz. He will also send his supervised graduate students to conduct research at the University of Vienna for eight months.


WU International Connect March 2024 Walailak University’s School of Engineering and Technology Collaborates with Indian Institute of Technology Indore, Promoting the Exchange of Students and Staff 23 on 7 March 2024, the School of Engineering and Technology (SET) at Walailak University (WU) had an opportunity to welcome executives and professors from a leading public research university in India Indian Institute of Technology Indore (IIT Indore) for the university visit and the collaboration discussion. The event, held at Honor Hall and Chorpradu Chamber of WU Hospital, was presided over by the president Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong to welcome the delegation from IIT Indore, led by Professor Dr. Suhas S. Joshi, Director; and Professor Avinash Sonawane, Dean of International Relations. Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong said SET is one of the outstanding schools at Walailak University. “The school is popular among students. During these past few years, the number of student applications is higher than their plan,” he said. Despite Thailand's demographic shift toward an aging society, Walailak University continues to have an increasing number of applicants, with higher quality, as evidenced by the increasing GPAX. Previously, in 2023, Associate Professor Dr. Thanongsak Imjai traveled to India and conducted a research study with IIT Indore professors. He is currently supervising Ph.D. students in their joint project the short-term collaborative research program for Ph.D. students 2023-2024 Director of IIT Indore Professor Dr. Suhas S. Joshi expressed interest in strengthening the collaboration, starting with the exchange of students, specifically the internship program that IIT Indore students have to undergo for two months before graduation, and later expanding to cover other areas including research, joint grants, etc. After the meeting, the SET team guided the IIT Indore representatives on a laboratory visit, including the Civil Engineering Lab, Mechanical Engineering Lab, Wood and Biomaterials Lab, and Physics Lab, and also let them on a campus tour of Walailak University.


WU International Connect March 2024 Walailak University Strengthens Academic and Research Collaboration with Showa University, Japan 24 Walailak University’s School of Allied Health Sciences (SAH) recently welcomed three professors from Showa University, led by Professor Yoshinori Kagaya from the Department of Rehabilitation, to strengthen collaboration. The delegation from Showa University attended the SAH International Conference (SAHIC) 2024, held virtually on March 25, 2024, under the theme "New Trends for Quality of Life in Medical Technology and Physical Therapy." WU International Connect March 2024 Walailak University and Mae Fah Luang University Signed an Agreement on Research, Education, and Academic Services 25 On 8 March 2024, Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, and Assistant Professor Dr. Matchima Naradisorn, President of Mae Fah Luang University, signed an agreement to collaborate on research, education, and academic services. The signing ceremony took place at the Chiang Saen Room, Vanchai Sirichana Building, Mae Fah Luang University, with the witness of Associate Professor Dr. Sarawoot Palipoch, Vice President of Walailak University, and Associate Professor Dr. Darunee Wattanasiriwech, Vice President of Mae Fah Luang University. The purpose of this five-year agreement is to collaboratively advance academic activities, aiming to maximize the benefits for research, education, and academic services of both institutions. This includes agreements on cooperation in various aspects, including collaborative research and development projects with details to be mutually agreed upon, the support for the exchange of faculty and students, the organization of academic seminars, and the provision of academic services to students, organizations, private sectors, communities, and the general public.


WU International Connect March 2024 Professor Wolfram Sopha shared in-depth information about the University of Nürtingen-Geislingen (HfWU) during the deans' forum. 26 From the recent activities, President Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong and the executive team traveled to negotiate cooperation at the University of NürtingenGeislingen (HfWU) on September 8th, 2566. Concurrently, the international college invited Professor Wolfram Sopha to be appointed as a visiting professor at the international college. During today's deans' forum on March 6th, 2567, Professor Wolfram Sopha shared indepth information about the University of Nürtingen-Geislingen (HfWU), shedding light on various opportunities for student and faculty exchanges and discussing potential collaborations that could arise, particularly in research endeavors.


WU International Connect March 2024 The International College collaborated with the Academic Service Center to hold a joint meeting with a group of restaurant entrepreneurs in the university's vicinity under the "Tha Sala - The Global Neighbour" project, now in its second year. 27 On March 7th, 2567, Walailak University, led by Dr. Sutita Manajit and Dr. Kruawan Ratnaburi, along with Professor Wolfram Sopha from the International College and the working team from the Academic Service Center, conducted a field visit to explore the needs of restaurant entrepreneurs for the second time in Tha Sala District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, under the "Tha Sala - The Global Neighbour" project, now in its second year. The "Tha Sala - The Global Neighbour" project, in its second year, is a continuous project aimed at enhancing the English language proficiency and preparing personnel and resources, as well as various environmental conditions, to welcome international students and staff from both Walailak University and the general international community. This project aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations, including providing education opportunities to communities at no cost (SDG 4), supporting community businesses to strengthen grassroots economies (SDG 1), and fostering partnerships with local communities and organizations to jointly develop sustainable societies (SDG 17). During this event, the team inquired about the challenges, experiences, and specific strategies for addressing the challenges faced by restaurant entrepreneurs in serving international customers. They also sought input on the needs of restaurant entrepreneurs to enhance service quality for international customers. For instance, they discussed developing English language skills among restaurant staff, learning about international cultures, and providing various conveniences. In this second survey, five restaurants participated and expressed their needs, including Phun's Noodle Shop, Ban Jit Restaurant, K.Gai Chicken Noodle Soup, Ban Don Tea House, and Baba Roti Chatsuk. The team will utilize the survey results to design activities to enhance English language skills and design English menu boards for participating restaurants.
