The recognition was a result of MHESI's 2023 Thai university research evaluation initiative, aimed at fostering globally high-caliber research production and cultivating a robust and sustainable research ecosystem within leading members of the Global and Frontier Research University group. The initiative focused on three key areas: 1) empowerment of national research capacity, 2) highly competitive world-class research, and 3) cultivation and enrichment of the research ecosystem. This hybrid orientation aimed to enable the freshmen to study happily and adapt themselves to the university’s teaching framework and learning environment effectively. The ceremony opened from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Khao Luang Chamber, located on the second floor of the Cooperative Education Building at Walailak University. Twelve recipients, accompanied by their supervisors, participated in this event, underlining the commitment of both students and advisors to academic excellence. WU International Connect January 2024 Visit Our Website https://cia.wu.ac.th/ Welcome Event and a Meeting with Parents Before Sending Students to Study in Indonesia On January 10, 2024, the Head of the Political Science Program, Assistant Professor Dr. Atthasit Sitthidamrong, and members of the ASEAN Studies major’s staff cordially met the parents of third-year ASEAN Studies majors. This occasion came as the students prepared to embark on their academic journey to the State University of Malang, located in Malang City, East Java Province, Indonesia. Ajarn Atthasit extended a warm greeting to parents at this gathering on behalf of the School and Walailak University. He also conveyed his sincere wishes and encouragement to all students who were about to proceed on their upcoming study abroad activities. Participants were then briefed by ASEAN Studies staff members on the history of the Study Abroad program, which has been running continuously for almost two decades. Additionally, comprehensive information regarding the student’s prospective educational institution was furnished, along with a brief description of the educational arrangements orchestrated by the Political Science Program in collaboration with the State University of Malang. WU International Connect January 2024 Visit Our Website https://cia.wu.ac.th/ Walailak University Organizes Orientation for New International Students, Highlighting “Happy Learning and Life Balance” Walailak University (WU), by Center for International Affairs (CIA), organized an orientation for new international students for the third semester of academic year 2023. The event, themed “Happy Learning and Life Balance”, took place today at Khaoluang Chamber, Cooperative Education Building. Scheduled to occur regularly every semester, the international student orientation aims to equip students with essential information about WU as well as important information such as visa, 90-day reporting requirement, and student health insurance. Around 30 students from seven countries - China, Russia, Vietnam, Pakistan, Bhutan, Egypt, and Nigeria – participated in the orientation. This number comprises both full-time and exchange students at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Associate Professor Dr. Surin Maisrikrod, Vice President of WU, presided over the event and emphasized the university's commitment to internationalization, a key focus alongside quality teaching and research. He said: “One of the key things that we’re trying to do in this university is to internationalize our university, meaning to connect ourselves with international communities as many communities, as many countries, as many universities as possible. WU International Connect January 2024 Visit Our Website https://cia.wu.ac.th/ Walailak University Promotes UNESCO- Inscribed Intangible Cultural Heritage, Establishing Nora Youth Training Centers in Chumphon and Phatthalung Walailak University, by the Center for Cultural and Sports Promotion (CSP), has established two Nora Youth Training Centers to preserve and safeguard Nora, a Sothern Thai performing art inscribed as intangible cultural heritage by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The training centers, established in 2023, are located at Saard Phaderm Wittaya School in Chumphon province and Thairatwittaya 23 (Koknode Temple) School in Phatthalung province. The fund CSP received for establishing the centers is from the Department of Cultural Promotion, Ministry of Culture. This progress by CSP follows the successful launch of an online Nora course for the public in 2022. Assistant Professor Dr. Marisa Poomiphak Na Nongkhai said that CSP’s main mission is to promote and safeguard Thai culture and arts. The fact that Nora was inscribed by UNESCO in 2021 made everyone proud. “We are very proud that, in 2021, Nora was inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity,” she said. Associate Professor Dr. Siwarit Pongsakornrungsilp, Vice President of Walailak University, revealed on 4 January 2023, that Walailak is currently implementing a research policy for the research project titled “One School One District (OSOD)” to have research unit of each school or college within Walailak University conduct on-site studies, identify and analyze problems, and develop research plans to addressing community needs in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Researchers from various schools collaborate to apply their expertise in science, research, and technology to solve community problems, starting in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. Dr. Siwarit mentioned that the project originated from Walailak University's commitment to addressing community needs, aligning with the national 20-year strategic plan, the 13th National Economic and Social Development Plan for 2023-2027. and the provincial operational plan of Nakhon Si Thammarat for 2023-2024. The university allocated funds to support full proposal research, with each project receiving 60,000 baht. Every school conducted on-site research in various districts of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, involving district chiefs, government officials, and other organizations to address economic, social, environmental, health, and quality of life issues. Hailing from three prestigious institutions, the cohort includes students from Baltic State Technical University (Russia), The Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (Russia), and Vietnam Aviation Academy (Vietnam). The students, embarking on an enriching academic journey, will be spending the upcoming semester from January to April 2024 at WUIC. WU International Connect January 2024 Visit Our Website https://cia.wu.ac.th/ Walailak University School of Pharmacy Hosts Lecture on Ethical Safety Testing for Cosmetic Raw Materials and Finished Products with Researcher from University of Barcelona Walailak University (WU) School of Pharmacy (SPM) hosted a lecture, as part of the Reinventing University program initiated by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, to exchange knowledge with researcher from the University of Barcelona, Spain, on Ethical Safety Testing for Cosmetic Raw Materials and Finished Products. The distinguished researcher invited was Professor Dr. Maria Pilar Vinardell, an expert on skin sensitization and a member of the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety of the European Commission. The event took place yesterday at Chorpradu Chamber, Walailak University Hospital. In attendance were Assistant Professor Dr. Apichart Atipairin, Dean of WU SPM; Associate Professor Dr. Wandee Rungseevijitprapa, Dean of Mae Fah Luang University School of Cosmetic Science; Associate Professor Dr. Udomsak Saengow, Director of WU Research and Innovation Institute of Excellence, along with lecturers and graduate students from SPM. Assistant Professor Dr. Namfa Sermkaew, Head of WU SPU Research Unit, said that the lecture is part of the ongoing Reinventing University Program, focusing on promoting “Innovative Cosmetics for Sustainability.” She noted, “Our researchers had the opportunity to update their knowledge. WU International Connect January 2024 Visit Our Website https://cia.wu.ac.th/ On 16 January 2024, Walailak University’s Center for International Affairs, School of Engineering and Technology and School of Informatics had a preliminary discussion with Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen (THM), University of Applied Sciences, Germany. Both WU Schools presented their possible collaborations, strengths and a framework for joint research initiations as well as staff and student mobility. WU International Connect January 2024 Visit Our Website https://cia.wu.ac.th/ THM, led by Prof. Dr. Rahamatullah Khondoker, professor in business informatics, Faculty of Mathematics, and Dr. Julia Bocher from the International Affairs Office, proposed the agreement signing and join cooperation together for the exchange of researchers and students. The agreement signing allows both institutions to be able to apply for German government funds and scholarships such as Erasmus scholarships and scholarships from the German Academic Exchange Services. However, for student mobility program, the proof of level B2 CEFR English language proficiency test would be required. Semester fees, approximately 300 Euros per semester (6 months for each semester) such as transportation, sports, library and other fees must be paid. Both schools were aware that the today’s discussion would be an overview of feasible collaboration framework and it needs more details on each collaborative domain with mutual consent by both institutions. Thus, Prof. Dr. Rahamatullah Khondoker is scheduled to visit Walailak University during 15-17 February 2024 to have more discussion and negotiation for further concrete cooperation as well as expansion of the scope of cooperation in near future. The Faculty of Engineering and Technology at Walailak University congratulates the students under the team name “The SparkEnergy GreenSupercap,” specializing in high-efficiency carbon for energy storage devices, comprising students from the Petrochemical and Polymer Engineering and Electrical Engineering programs. The team members include Miss Pichayapa Boonsuk, Miss Sasipriya Phanthaburi, Mr. Jirachai Aphichaiyakul, Mr. Nitthis Thamrongthepthak, Mr. Pongsapak Hinjiw from the Petrochemical and Polymer Engineering program, and Miss Nongnapas Dawsuwan, Mr. Narathip Chaiyarat, Mr. Hanif Dalasuh from the Electrical Engineering program, guided by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Uthen Thubsuang and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kamol Thinsurat as advisors. They clinched the top prize in the higher education category at The Young Energy Designer Awards 2023 competition, an initiative organized by the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency, Ministry of Energy. The competition aimed to foster young energy innovation designers. The award ceremony took place on December 20, 2566, at the Ramakarden Hotel, Bangkok.
