NURSING PHILOSOPHY

I have chosen the philosophy of romanticism. This philosophy perspective is learner centered and promotes creativity and
discovery while encouraging students to think outside the box. As an educator, I recognize that all students are unique and
can thrive utilizing multiple styles of learning.

All students bring their own values, beliefs, and ideas to the program and my goal is to further develop their knowledge and
enable students to thrive in a healing, caring, and empowering educational environment. I expect my students and myself
to display honesty, respect, and kindness toward one another. I prefer to maintain a calm, clean, and uncluttered
classroom environment. I encourage my students to be involved in innovation and technology use and I utilize them within
my practice. Simulation laboratory hours and a variety of clinical areas are assigned to each student so that they may have
a well-rounded clinical experience.

Health is linked to quality of life and remains a priority in society. I agree with Watson’s Caring Model. I value caring for my
own mind, body, and spirit so that I may perform my best with patients, coworkers, and students. I encourage and teach
my students about the attitude, knowledge, and skills to work compassionately with all patients regardless of age, sex, race,
culture, or religion. I also encourage diversity and recognize that all healthcare professionals have unique gifts they
contribute to the institution. Nursing is both an art and a science. As part of Watson’s Caring Model, I strive to combine
metaphysics, science, art, spirituality, and morality into my practice as an educator.

I also use adult learning theory to engage students in a democratic learning process and encourage collaboration in my
classroom. Adult learners are expected to determine their own learning needs, organize and monitor their progress with
their studies, and work toward their goals. I expect my students to contact me for any questions and I make every effort to
respond to my students in an appropriate and timely manner.

It is a goal of mine to help students become motivated, self-actualized people. I wish to help my students develop their own
autonomy, creativeness, and independence in their practice. Another goal as an educator is for my students to enter the
workplace as well educated, confident, and empowered human beings. My students remain responsible for learning the
required material, contributing to the discussions and activities, and completing assignments as scheduled. Students remain
accountable for displaying professional and respectful behavior in the classroom and while on site for clinical rotations.

Life experience has further developed my values and beliefs. I believe in lifelong learning and I would like to continue to
evolve my role as a teacher and facilitator of learning. I will continue to reexamine my philosophy and build on it as I
develop in my role as an educator. Education will continue to evolve as people continue to evolve. Helping students to
learn and enjoy the empowerment of lifelong learning is my ultimate goal.
