HOLT President Speaks to St. Mary’s University

Corinna Holt Richter, President and Chief Administrative Officer, was the St. Mary’s University’s Forum on Entrepreneurship Breakfast
Series keynote speaker in February. The breakfast discussion, titled “A legacy of Innovation, Values and Growth,” was held in the Pearl Stable
at the Historic Pearl Brewery.

Corinna, with HOLT executives Guy Clumpner, President-HDSI, and Paul Hensley, Senior Vice President-Finance, shared with the audience
her and Peter’s story of assuming stewardship of the legendary HOLT CAT brand from their father and grandfather before him, providing a
unique view into one of the largest family-owned businesses in San Antonio. She also revealed how she and Peter are leading an organization
whose commitment to values-driven leadership is reflected in the smallest decisions, and how these values have stood the test of time.

Throwback: Original B.D. Holt Co. Store, Corpus Christi, 1961

In 1933, Bill Holt, son of Caterpillar innovator and founder Ben Holt, began operations as the Cat dealership for the 60 southern counties of Texas. In the 1950s,
Bill brought two of his nephews into the dealership – B.D. Holt and Holt Atherton. In 1961, B.D. purchased Bill Holt’s assets in the 20 southern counties of the
William K. Holt territory and established B.D. Holt Co. as a Caterpillar dealer with headquarters in Corpus Christi, pictured above. Holt Atherton later purchased
Bill’s assets in the northern 40 counties of Bill’s territory and established Holt Machinery Co. in San Antonio. The two companies merged in 1987.

In January, HOLT and Texas First Rentals
volunteers rebuilt a playground for Perpetual
Help Homes, which offers transitional shelter
for women and children in need.

Audy Snodgrass, Parts Manager 3, kept in

them for United Way and sought to help
in other ways. The shelter previously had
a playset, but it was destroyed in 2017 by
Hurricane Harvey. In addition to Audy, Ashley
Carter, Outside Sales Rep; Dottie Harwell,
Service Coordinator; Javier Lopez, Shop

CSLA participants toured HOLT CAT during their
one-day program on site.

Three Named To CSLA

Since 1986, the South San Antonio Chamber
of Commerce operates the City South
Leadership Academy (CSLA) to identify,
develop and motivate potential leaders in
the community to address the needs of the
Southside of San Antonio. The CSLA is a
nine-month program that studies economic
and community development, volunteerism,
partnerships, internal/external relations, and
more. Diverse participants are exposed to an
array of venues, knowledgeable speakers and
educational tours of a wide range of locations
during the program. As in past years, one day

suppliers, and ultimately save money and time, allowingP12CustomerExperience P13-15ServiceAwards

managers to focus more on sales and service. Today, HOLT

managers have CODA, a standardized, automated and online

purchasing process.

“Procurement isn’t a top down function,” explained Terran.
“It only works through collaboration between users, technical,
and procurement. Someone determines a need, then the team
works to identify and validate the purchase, and procurement
engages a supplier. The team evaluates the proposal and
result and adjusts as necessary.” The cost savings come from
a consolidated process, leveraging larger purchases versus
a myriad of smaller ones across the enterprise, and move
managers into their real goal: growing the business.

“I don’t walk in the user’s shoes, and they don’t have the
procurement knowledge or data that I have to make those
decisions. Getting those together, you have a team to define the
need—the user, technical and procurement as the facilitator.
Together, this is how to decide what is the best for HOLT,” said
Terran.

The results can be amazing. In 2017, improved and centralized
procurement saved HOLT $1.06 million; in 2018 HOLT shaved
$752,000 from its expenditures. Examples provide the evidence
of the value of procurement and are equally impressive.

Environmental and Operations worked with procurement to
develop a request for proposal (RFP) package for HOLT’s
needs for removal of wash rack waste, parts washers, used
oil and other products and services for all locations. By
engaging with suppliers on behalf of HOLT, the team achieved
standardized reduced pricing and increased the quality of
service. This was a great example of how the collaboration
between environmental (technical), operations (users) and
procurement allowed the competition and engagement with a
higher quality, lower cost supplier.
