Methods of Instructions Throughout the course, active and independent learning of the relevant disciplines will be encouraged. This will be facilitated by studying the recommended texts complemented by laboratory practical sessions, small group teaching, tutorials, student seminars, lectures, interactive museum exhibits, visits and computer-aided learning. Most topics are taught in a multi-disciplinary approach. Selected topics that are of importance are discussed as seminars. During the clinical years, emphasis is placed on apprenticeship training complemented partly by didactic teaching. Students will form integral parts of units to which they will be attached and participate in learning activities as a group. 5 background of iium • Philosophy inspired by 1977 World Conference of Muslim Education in Makkah • The university was officially established on 20 May 1983 by the Government of Malaysia. • Founded under the Companies Act of 1965 enabled it to use English and Arabic as the medium of instruction and enhance its global orientation • IIUM integrates Islamic values and worldview into its humanities, scientific and technical curriculum, befitting the university’s slogan “The Garden of Knowledge and Virtue” • IIUM ensures that the students are trained to be responsible, imbued with good ethics, high moral values and professionalism, lifelong learning managerial and skills, entrepreneurial skills well as leadership skills.


6 KUANTAN, pahang Kuantan is a city and the state capital of Pahang, Malaysia. It is located near the mouth of the Kuantan River. Kuantan is the 18th largest city in Malaysia based on 2010 population, and the largest city in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The town is about 6km across with a beautiful Grand Mosque in the centre. The administrative centre of the state of Pahang was officially relocated to Kuantan on 27 August 1955 from Kuala Lipis and was officiated by HRH Sultan Abu Bakar Ri’ayatuddin Al Muadzam Shah, The Sultan of Pahang. There are quite some fun attractions and sights in and around Kuantan. Here you can escape the hustle of modern city life and yet enjoy all the trappings of modern living. The beaches in its vicinity are some of the most beautiful in the country. The best beaches are Teluk Chempedak, Beserah, Balok, Batu Hitam and of course the pupular, Cherating Beach. You can visit Menara Kuantan 188, the newest attraction in the city which is situated at Kuantan river esplanade. The river cruising also the worth to try. Around Kuantan the following attractions are worth a visit; Panching Caves, Sungai Pandan water fall, Berkelah water fall, Sungai Lembing tin mine (museum), a trip to Pulau Ular, Cherating turtle sanctuary, a firefly tour or of course shopping at one of the malls in the city.


7 IIUM KUANTAN CAMPUS The new building of Kulliyyah of Medicine building was officiated on June 2004 by HRH Sultan of Pahang at the Bandar Indera Mahkota on a 1000 acres site. The Bandar Indera Mahkota Campus (IMC) is now expanded with five (5) other Kulliyyahs and other facilities for students and staff. • Kulliyyah of Pharmacy • Kulliyyah of Allied Health Sciences • Kulliyyah of Nursing • Kulliyyah of Science • Kulliyyah of Dentistry • Library • IIUM Mosque • One Stop Student Centre • Sport Complex (Mini Stadium and Indoor Arena) • Student Hostels (Mahallah) The Kuantan Campus was established with the commencement of the medical programme in 1997 and is located at the Jalan Hospital in the town of Kuantan. The Indera Mahkota Campus is about 5 km from the Kuantan town centre. The official opening of the Indera Mahkota Campus took on a festive atmosphere with educational, social and recreational activities organized by both the students and staff.


8 teaching hospital & FACILITIES The IIUM Medical Centre was built based on the Private Funding Initiative (PFI) with 25-year concession agreement, on 27.8 acres of land, equipped with 300 beds for inpatients and supported by more than 133 specialists. The IIUM Medical Centre also includes the development of an undergraduate and postgraduate teaching hospital and tertiary referral centre, complementing the medical and allied health faculty provisions. The ceremony marked the beginning of the construction of the IIUM Medical Centre. On 9th May 2016 the IIUM Medical Centre was hand over to IIUM. This success is the outcome of the painstaking task and well-coordinated effort by IIUM and all relevant agencies. The MBBS programme requires the students to perform two (2) years pre-clinical (Phase I) and three (3) years clinical training (Phase II and Phase III). During pre-clinical phase, the students need to acquire theoretical concept and early clinical exposure. The teaching facilities include Kulliyyah of Medicine (KOM), Indera Mahkota Campus and Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical centre (SASMEC). During the clinical phase, they need to perform clinical training in the tertiary hospital, e.g Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA) & Hospital Sultan Ahmad Shah (HOSHAS), government clinics and district health offices. Physical resources such as teaching facilities available at the KOM, like audio-visual aids, seminar rooms, lecture halls, library and clinical skill laboratories, are adequate to cater for the number of students in the programme. The number of lecturers is also sufficient; this includes lecturers within the Kulliyyah and consultants or specialists from the Ministry of Health. The main sites of clinical attachment of the clinical teaching and learning are Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Centre (SASMEC @IIUM), the University Teaching Hospital and IIUM Family Health Clinic, which cater for clinical services and teachings. Besides providing the physical facilities for teaching and learning, KOM has taken the initiative to provide adequate and suitable accommodation for clinical students posted to district hospitals. Currently, KOM has rented five (5) houses in Temerloh for students who are attached to HOSHAS, Temerloh.

11 ADMISSION REQUIREMENT CENTRE FOR FOUNDATION STUDIES (CFS) The majority of the candidates admitted into the Kulliyyah of Medicine IIUM are graduates of the Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) IIUM (previously known as the Matriculation Centre IIUM). They are required to have obtained a CGPA of 3.50 or higher and pass the interview session. DIRECT INTAKE 1) Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM)/Advanced Level • Minimum CGPA of 3.80 with minimum grades of AAB in 3 subjects i.e. Biology and Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics; and • MUET Band 4.5 or 4.0 (till the year 2020) • At least Credit at the SPM level or its equivalent in Pendidikan Islam or Tasawwur Islam or Pendidikan Al-Qur’an & As Sunnah or Pendidikan Syariah Islamiah and; • Pass an interview and/or aptitude test conducted. 2) Bachelor’s Degree Level • Degree in Health or Pure or Applied Sciences from institutions of higher learning recognised by the Senate with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 • Pass an interview and/or aptitude test conducted. 3) GCE A-Level • Minimum grades of ABC or BBB in 3 subjects, i.e.Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics • Pass an interview and/or aptitude test conducted. 4) International Baccalaureate (IB) • 30 points with a minimum of 2 science subjects or Mathematics at Higher Level (HL) and 1 science subject at Standard Level; and • Attained a minimum score of 5 each in Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics; and • Pass an interview and/or aptitude test conducted 5) Matriculation or Foundation In Science or Pre-Medical Course • Minimum CGPA of 3.80 with AAA in 3 subjects i.e. Biology and Chemistry and Physics or Mathematics; and • MUET Band 4.5 or 4.0 (till the year 2020) • At least B grade at SPM level in 5 subjects i.e Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or Additional Mathematics and 1 other subject. • At least Credit at the SPM level or its equivalent in Pendidikan Islam or Tasawwur Islam or Pendidikan Al-Qur’an & As Sunnah or Pendidikan Syariah Islamiah • Pass an interview and/or aptitude test conducted • Another subject at the School Certificate level or its equivalent *Effective on Academic Session 2023/2024

MBBS PROGRAMME The Kulliyyah offers a 5-year course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The five-year medical programme is divided into 3 phases. Phase I consists of the first two years of the programme. It involves integrated teaching and learning of the relevant basic medical sciences. Phase II (Year 3) and Phase III (Year 4 and Year 5) involves clinical skills development and subsequently consolidation of clinical clerkship in the various clinical disciplines. The Islamic input topics are integrated throughout the 5-year course. LENGTH OF COURSE Our course aims to produce competent doctors who will serve their patients and the community with care and integrity. They will not only be equipped with scientific, clinical knowledge and skills to function effectively as medical doctors but also with the Islamic vision of the unity of knowledge together with the spirit of Tawhid. We aim to develop in them a healthy critical faculty and the desire and skills to continue self-directed learning to keep abreast with future advances in the disciplines of medicine. Have been provided with the foundation for knowledge acquisition and are able to take the responsibility of continuous lifelong education. PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOME At the end of the Medical Programme, the graduate should be able to 1. Illustrate an understanding of the mechanisms of human bodily functions in health and disease from the biological, behavioural, epidemiological and social aspects. 2. Perform history taking and physical examination in the most professional way. 3. Formulate a diagnosis and propose investigations to confirm or negate the diagnosis and competently draw up its management plans. 4. Comprehend interactions of individuals in the society and community in promoting healthy lives and wellbeing for all. 5. Exhibit ethical and professional values in consonance with that of a physician. 6. Communicate effectively with patients’ relatives, various members of the medical team and colleagues. 7. Demonstrate skills in reasoning and deduction to solve medical and related problems 8. Inculcate the habits of inquisitiveness and acquire the methodology of information gathering, interpretation and making inferences and logical conclusions. 9. 17 COURSE DESCRIPTION During Phase I (Year 1 and Year 2) of study, the students will cover various Basic Medical Sciences subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology and Parasitology, which cover the body system's normal and abnormal function and structures. These subjects are relevant as a foundation for their clinical years. In Phase II (Year 3), students will be posted to major hospital attachments, which are Internal medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and General Paediatrics. In Phase III, during Year 4, they will cover Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, Orthopaedics, Family Medicine, and Emergency Medicine. They will also have shorter postings in specialized specialties such as Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesiology and Radiology. The students will also undergo an Elective Postings for 4 weeks at various hospital and disciplines. In Year 5, they will repeat certain major specialties such as Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Surgery and Family Medicine. In addition, they will also cover Psychiatry and Dermatology postings. Throughout the programme, the students will be covering additional Islamic Input in Medical Programme (IIMP), which consists of 5 themes as follows: ▪ Year 1: Fundamental Concepts and Paradigms ▪ Year 2: Medicine, Spirituality and Revelation ▪ Year 3: Medicine and the Law ▪ Year 4: Social Issues and Medical Practice ▪ Year 5: Professional Etiquette and Ethics The University provides a general professional education with multidisciplinary input, including ethics and humanities that prepare students for flexible career options, in line with the Sejahtera Academic Framework (SAF) to produce sustainable, humane, and well-balanced humankind. The University’s curriculum structure, contents, implementation, and assessments are directed toward these objectives. In addition to the formal curriculum, students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular courses/activities. There are 2 types of co-curricular activities for all IIUM students. They are • credited co-curricular courses • non-credited co-curricular activities The credited co-curricular courses are compulsory for all MBBS students to undertake as a requirement to graduate.


18 MBBS 1109 Normal Structure And Function Of The Human Cell, Tissue And Body Systems The Normal Structure and Function of the Human Cell, Tissue and Body Systems I course presents basic core knowledge on the properties of cells and how they communicate. It also includes the basic concepts on the functions of some principal organ systems, the mechanisms by which the body is able to coordinate and regulate the activities of its various parts. MBBS 1210 Normal Response and Process to Diseased State The Normal Response and Process to Diseased State course covers basic and general concepts of deviation from normality leading to diseased states. Inflammatory and repair processes, principles of cardiovascular and circulatory disorders, infection, cell growth and differentiation, and neoplasm are presented. The topics cover all the important aspects of general pathology. In addition, basic immunology, molecular genetics and concepts of ‘Ilm are incorporated into this course. MBBS 1311 Body Reactions to Physical, Chemical and Biological Agents The Body Reactions to Physical, Chemical and Biological Agents course is designed to introduce students to the body reactions secondary to namely physical, chemical and biological agents. It covers the principles and applied aspects of medical microbiology, pharmacology and physiology. Relevant aspects of bacteriology, mycology, parasitology and medical entomology are also presented in this block. Basic and applied pharmacology such as pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics are introduced at this stage to form the foundation of medical therapeutics in their clinical years. Relevant topics on drugs development and application of some therapeutic agents are also presented. MBBS 1410 Structure and Function in Normal and Diseased States and Behavioural Sciences The course presents the anatomy and physiological aspects of the upper and lower limbs and gastrointestinal system. It also includes virology, parasitology, pharmacology, behavioural sciences and introduction to public health. They are dealt with in an integrated manner. The course also covers the clinical sciences aspects of the systems in which the common diseases involving the systems are presented to the students. PHASE 1: YEAR 1


MBBS 2109 Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Haemopoietic Systems The Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Haemopoietic Systems course presents the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology and pharmacology aspects of the cardiovascular, respiratory and haemopoietic systems. They are dealt with in an integrated manner. The course covers also covers the clinical sciences aspects of the systems in which the common diseases involving the systems are presented to the students. MBBS 2210 The Alimentary and Hepatobiliary Systems The Alimentary and Hepatobiliary Systems course presents the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology and pharmacology aspects of the Alimentary and Hepatobiliary systems. They are dealt with in an integrated manner. The course covers also covers the clinical sciences aspects of the systems in which the common diseases involving the systems are presented to the students. In addition, the course also included the introduction of biostatistics. MBBS 2310 The Endocrine, Reproductive and Urinary Systems The Endocrine, Reproductive and Urinary Systems course is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the basic principles and the dysfunction and diseased states relating to the endocrine system, reproductive system and renal system. Information will be presented in an integrated approach incorporating various disciplines of medicine (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, psychology, surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics & gynaecology). Islamic Inputs on ‘Biological Miracle’ is also covered. MBBS 2410 The Locomotor and Nervous Systems The Locomotor and Nervous Systems course is designed to introduce students to the nervous system and locomotor system. It covers the central and peripheral nervous systems as well as the locomotor system. It elaborates on the anatomical structures and physiological functions as well as the pathological disease states involving these two systems. The course also discusses on the biochemical and pharmacological aspects. The Islamic input on “Structure and Function of the Body Systems” is also discussed. 19 PHASE I: YEAR 2


20 MBBS 3002 Elementary Clinic The Elementary Clinic is a two-week course provided to the students at the start of Phase II (Year 3). The posting serves as an introductory course to expose and prepare the students for the junior clerkship in the clinical years. MBBS 3110 Internal Medicine I The Internal Medicine I course introduces students to basic clinical methods and enables them to acquire communication skills in history taking, physical examination and making diagnosis. This is the first direct exposure for the students to patients in real life clinical setting in the hospital wards. The course will be conducted in the in-patient and out-patient hospital set ups and involves direct contact with patients and other health care professionals, all working together in a multi-disciplinary team approach in holistic patient care. As one of the core disciplines during the clinical year, internal medicine shares with other clinical disciplines the common responsibility of imparting knowledge, teaching the skills, and promoting good attitudes which are basic to the development of a competent general physician. This course introduces the student to a unique, complex, and challenging field of medicine. It emphasises those aspects of internal medicine important for all medical students and will provide a foundation for those students who elect to further their study in any field of medicine. MBBS 3210 General Surgery II The General Surgery I course is a 10-week block including one examination week. This is the first clinical exposure for the students to the real-life clinical setting in surgical ward. This course introduces the student to the basic clinical methods involving history taking, clinical examination techniques and formulation of diagnosis in surgical patients. MBBS 3309 Women’s Health and Diseases I The course introduces issues unique to childhood by focusing on human development biology and diseases. The emphasis will be on clinical skills and understanding of the basic pathophysiology of paediatric diseases. MBBS 3409 General Paediatrics I The General Paediatrics I is a nine-week course provided to the students at the Phase II (Year 3). The course addresses issues unique to childhood and adolescence by focusing on human developmental biology, and by emphasising the impact of family, community and society on child health and wellbeing. Additionally, the course focuses on the impact of disease and its treatment on the developing human, and emphasises growth and development, principles of health supervision and recognition of common health problems in the community. The experience gained in the course introduces the student to a unique, complex and challenging field of medicine. It emphasises those aspects of general paediatrics important for all medical students and will provide a foundation for those students who elect to further study the health care of infants, children and adolescents. MBBS 4003 Forensic Medicine The course will provide students with an overview of the field of forensic medicine covering a wide range of topics such as Ethics, Health and Safety Aspects in Mortuary, Clinical Forensics, Paediatric Forensics, Forensic Anthropology, Forensic Odontology, Forensic Psychology as well as Court Procedures and Expert Evidence, among others. The course is not intended to provide students with a detailed knowledge of forensic sciences, but rather to give insight into how they may be applied in criminal investigations. MBBS 4109 Community Medicine The Community Medicine course is introduced during Phase III of the MBBS programme. Community Medicine is the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities. This work is achieved by promoting healthy lifestyles, researching diseases and injuries prevention, and detecting, preventing and responding to infectious diseases. Community Medicine focuses on the prevention aspect of health and stresses the important of the effect of surroundings or environment to health, and how health can affect the environment in return. MBBS 4210 Oorthopaedics, Traumatology & Rehabilitation I The Orthopaedics, Traumatology and Rehabilitation I introduces the students to the basic core knowledge and clinical skills in orthopaedics. It covers common clinical orthopaedic problems. The students are exposed to bedside teaching, out-patient clinic, operation theatre session, orthopaedic procedures, seminar, clinical pathological conference, radiological conference, tutorial, on call, basic orthopaedics skills course (BOSC), basic trauma and resuscitation course (BTRC) and practical Islamic input session in orthopaedics (IIIO). MBBS 4305 Family Medicine I The Family Medicine I course will introduce the student to the core foundation of knowledge and clinical skills in Family Medicine. Family Medicine is a clinical discipline which is concerned with providing personal, comprehensive, and continuous care for the individual in the context of the family and the community with the integration of biomedical, behavioral and social sciences. It focuses on the recognition and management of common problems typically seen at primary care level and provision of preventive care including health-risk assessments and personalized counseling on healthy lifestyle. MBBS 4404 Emergency Medicine The Emergency and Trauma course is an introduction to acute management for emergency and trauma. The clinical foundations of basic acute care will be explored. The medical sciences linked with emergency and trauma will be deliberated in depth. Medical students will be able to engage in detail discussions pertaining to the pathophysiology of emergency and trauma. The input will be predominantly directed towards adult patient care. Students will have both theoretical modules and clinical elements supported by classroom education. Throughout the course students will complete various clinical proficiencies. 21 PHASE III: YEAR 4


22 MBBS 4503 Otorhinolaryngology- Head & Neck Surgery The Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery course includes a series of lectures and seminars on common ear, nose and throat conditions and a two-week clinical attachment at the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), IIUM Medical Center (IIUMMC), Kuantan. The emphasis is on the common problems seen among patients in the ORL daily clinics and surgical ward. MBBS 4603 Ophthalmology The Ophthalmology course covers anatomy, physiology, pathology and pharmacology aspects of the ocular systems. It also touches an aspect of principles of procedures in Ophthalmology as well as Islamic values. Students are required to apply the knowledge in clinical problem-solving and decision-making process in the management of ophthalmology patients. MBBS 4703 Anaethesiology & Critical Care Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Course includes a series of lectures on common topics related to management of patients undergoing general and regional anesthesia, intensive care, perioperative care and acute pain management and a two-week clinical attachments at the Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, Sultan Ahmad Shah Medical Center @IIUM (SASMEC). During the course, students will acquire knowledge and skills in basic and advance airway management and resuscitation (Basic Life Support). We also introduce crisis management in anesthesia and ICU with interactive session. MBBS 4803 Radiology The Radiology course in Year 4 is a two-week posting in specialized postings block. During the course, the students will be posted in all the examination rooms in the department. The importance of radiology or imaging studies which is to complement their clinical examination and history taking is emphasized. However, the students are not expected to know the details of the examinations performed. Only certain commonly performed examinations need to be known in detail by students. MBBS 4902 Introduction to Psychiatry The Introduction to Psychiatry course is designed to expose students to the basic knowledge on various common psychiatric disorders. The course covers concepts of psychiatric disorders as well as the contributing factors of mental health. It includes the basic psychology, human development, behavioural sciences, phenomenology, psychiatric disorders and management. MBBS 4904 Elective Posting The students are free to choose either a Clinical Elective Posting or an Elective Research at any institution of their choice. For the Clinical Elective Posting, the students are expected to participate in the activities of the department/unit concerned at the institution and be exposedto the different case mixes of patients. For research activities, the students are expected to participate in research works carried out under the respective supervisor. PHASE III: YEAR 4


MBBS 5002 Entrepreneurship The Entrepreneurship course will expose students to a wide range of topics, divided into three main parts, namely entrepreneurship management, entrepreneurship resource and entrepreneurship project, and presentation. MBBS 5108 Internal Medicine II The Internal Medicine II course re-emphasises the students to basic clinical methods and communication skills in history taking, physical examination and making diagnosis. This is the second direct exposure for students to patients in a hospital setting. The course will be conducted in both the in-patient and out-patient settings. The latter includes an ambulatory care centre where common invasive medical procedures are carried out. Students will develop further their skills in communication and acquire deeper understanding of patient problems including the diseased states. They will also be able to work up appropriate action plan for management. Students will also be exposed to the concept of holistic patient care where he or she is expected to be directly involved. MBBS 5208 General Surgery II The General Surgery II course is the second exposure of the students to the surgical ward. This course re-emphasises the basic core knowledge in clinical surgery. This is done by strengthening the skills in history taking and presentation, and further refining the examination techniques. It also emphasises critical thinking concept in formulating diagnosis. In this course students are more involved in the daily management of the patients. It exposes them to more complex diseases and problems in surgical patients. MBBS 5307 Women’s Health & Diseases II The Women’s Health and Disease II course has been designed to consolidate the knowledge and skills in Obstetrics & Gynaecology that has been acquired during the junior clerkship (year 3). This course put greater emphasis on the management aspects. It covers common clinical orthopaedic problems. MBBS 5702 Family Medicine II Family Medicine II is a two-week course provided to the Year 5 students during Phase III of the MBBS program. The posting serves as a continuation of Family Medicine I. This course provides further exposure and experiences to diverse clinical disciplines, particularly on the expanded services program available in primary care clinics. MBBS 5802 Dermatology The Dermatology course introduces students to the clinical features, psychosocial aspects, investigation and treatment of common skin diseases. 41 students activities STUDENT ORIENTATION PROGRAMME (TAARUF WEEK) During the first week after registration, students will undergo an orientation or Taaruf program. This program is organised together with Medical Students Association (MSC), the Students Representative Council (SRC) and the Mahallah Representative Council (MRC). The aim is to allow new students to become acquainted with other students, staff, the campus, study programme, services and various aspects of life in the Kulliyyah Campus. Co-curriculum programme will focuses on fouraspects; training on lliving skills, group learning, social activities and sports/recreation. The aim is to consolidate and further improve students character, Islamic knowledge, motivation and leadership skills. MEDICAL STUDENTS SOCIETY (MEDSS) Despite the busy schedule with MBBS programme, students take part in extracurricular activities which organized by MSC, MRC, SRC and the Kulliyyah. The objectives are to ptomote unity and solidarity among the students and instill the brotherhood nationally and internationally thorugh various activities. The Deputy Dean, Student Develoment and Community Services (SDCE) chairs a committee of students representative to streamline these activities. Apart from the regular seminar and visits, students give talks to secondary school children on health, motivation and related matters. Occasionally, welfare activities are organized for the needy. Students engange in recreational activities through debates, chess games, silat, badminton, volleyball, netball, soccer and etc.


42 CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The medical profession is a noble one, for doctors do not only treat physical aspects but also mental and spiritual aspects of patients. The fundamental difference in the philosophy of teaching between the Kulliyyah of Medicine and other medical faculties in Malaysia is that we aim to produce doctors who are not only competent physicians but doctors who are confidently knowledgeable of the spiritual healing aspects according to Islam. Thus our five years training (and the two year matriculation) programme encompasses the physical, intellectual and spiritual development of students in order to become ‘complete’ doctors. The integrated medical curriculum at IIUM is suffused with characterization, interpretation and application of knowledge within the context of Islamic tenets and philosophy. Graduates may go into general practice where they can look after the community at the primary care level. Some may specialize in the various clinical specialities. Opportunities are available for high achieving graduates both in government and the local universities for extended training in various specialities. Research opportunities are offered in the university to full-time staff members or temporary research appointees in both clinical and non-clinical fields. Graduates who wish to take up an academic career are normally required to work for a research degree.

I render this Oath in Thy Holy name and I undertake: To be the instrument of Thy Will and Mercy, and, in all humbleness, to exercise justice, love and compassion; To extend my of service to one and all, to the rich and the poor, to friend and foe alike, regardless of race, religion or colour; To uphold human life as precious and sacred, and to protect and honour it at all times and under all circumstances in accordance Thy Law; To do my utmost to alleviate pain and misery, and to comfort and counsel human beings in sickness and anxiety; To respect confidence and guard the secrets of all my patients; To maintain the dignity of health care, and to honour teachers, students and members of my profession; To strive in pursuit of knowlegde in Thy name for the benefit of mankind, and to uphold human honour and dignity; To acquire the courage to admit mistakes, mend my ways and to forgive the wrongs of others; To be ever-conscious of my duty to Allah and His Messenger (SAW) and to follow the precepts of Islam in private and in public; O Allah grant me strength, patience and dedication to adhere to this Oath at all times.
