Head Teacher’s Message

DeaOr
 Parents/Carers,

We have had a very busy term 1, so much happening… with
so much more to look forward to.

A reminder… All parent/carers are very welcome to our
‘Morning Meeting’ which takes place each Monday (or a
Tuesday if it is a Monday holiday) at 9.05am. This lasts
about 10minutes and goes over the week ahead in school.
We have had a few parent/carers come along and we would
love to see more of you. You are welcome to stay for a coffee
or tea afterwards if you have time.

The ‘Dates for your Diary’ section at the end of this
newsletter has been updated. Please have a look as lots
of new dates in here! We will also continue to keep you
informed about events and dates to remember using our
school Xpressions app and using Twitter.

A big change coming our way is the
extension of the Early Years Class
opening hours - which begins after
the October break. We are looking
forward to being part of this exciting
pilot.

In partnership,

Susan Lauder

Message from the Office

Dea
 r Parent/Carers

Thank you for all your help with annual data returns. We
have collated updated details on our records. As always, if
you move house or change emergency contact details,
please let us know as soon as possible.

All classes are going to be going on more trips and we really
do appreciate a prompt return of forms. Children cannot go
on a trip if we do not have the EV5 forms returned.

A reminder - if your child is absent due to illness, a holiday or
because they are attending an appointment it is essential
that we know about this. Please call the school on 552626 to
let us know.

Another reminder… office hours are
8.30am-4.00pm Monday to
Thursday and 8.30-3.30pm on a
Friday. The phone will not be
answered outwit these times.

Kind regards
Mrs Smith

School Improvement
Plan

Our House Captains, as Improvers, have been working
hard to create a pictorial version of our School
Improvement Plan. They have involved lots of our
children when doing this and the next time you are in the
office area you must have a look!

The children are becoming more involved in the self-
evaluation of our school and are spending some time
with Mrs Lauder looking at ‘How Good is OUR School’.
More information about this coming soon.

Our ‘Breakfast Bounce’ was very successful last

Magic Money
Makers

Written by Dylan and Carly

In this council we think of fun ways to make money for
the school and for charities. We are called the Magic
Money Makers and we have children from P1-P7 in our
committee. At our first
meeting in 2018 we
agreed to call the group
the Magic Money Makers.
We then had to come up
with ideas for a logo and
vote on our favourite one
for our lanyard – Dylan’s
design was chosen!

Last year we raised a lot of money with our coin
challenge where everyone in the school was given the
challenge of collecting loads of loose change. We then
used the coins to make a piece of art in each class for a
competition. We also had competitions to see which class
had raised the most money and which class could lay the
longest trail of coins. It was great fun and we raised
over £400! P3/4 won all 3 competitions but every class
was awarded a fun afternoon for taking part.

We also raised money for Cash for Kids Superheroes
where everyone in the school was sponsored for being a
hero and doing jobs at home. 2 presenters from West
FM came in and interviewed Derry, Mason, and
Samantha. We all heard them on the radio!

Our after school family cooking club starts soon which
has been funded by our successful bid to the
Participatory Budget Fund.

This year we are doing a Go Purple day for Ayrshire
Hospice on Friday 11th October. We have planned some
fun activities such as wear purple for £1 and we are
organising a Purple Treasure Hunt and a whole school
purple art competition. We hope we raise lot of money
for the charity.

Also in October we are organising a Wear Red Day
where everyone pays £1to wear red for the day. It is to
raise awareness for a charity that ‘shows racism the
red card’ to help stop racism.

We will be planning more events throughout the year…

The Eco 18

Hello from Blacklands Primary’s Eco council 2019-2020!
As a council we are looking to develop and improve our
eco-friendly attitudes and responsibilities throughout the
school. We have continued the work of our previous
council members and have been exploring new ways to
support and improve our school.
So far we have:
· Created posters for around the school to remind
everyone of their responsibilities. We have spoken to all
classes about this as well.
· We have set up a timetable for our council members to
help Mr Devlin with the paper recycling and litter picking.
We do this once a week.

· We have introduced a pen recycling point which can be
accessed by everyone.

This year we have set ourselves some targets to help our eco
status, these include:

* An outdoor classroom. We would like to purchase an outdoor
classroom area which allows all classes to take their learning
outside around the year. We will be exploring funding grants and
other ways to raise the money alongside the fundraising council,
Mrs Lauder and Mrs Gibson.

* We have visited another school in Renfrewshire who have
created lots of exciting playground games and resources from
reclaimed materials. We would like to create our own versions
which we can use in our playground and in the field.

*. We would also like to get new bins for our playground as the
old ones are looking a bit weathered

Our council is also responsible for organising and running our
Fairtrade week in school. We are discussing possible ideas for
the classes, school and will be organising a whole school event to
round off the week.

We are all looking forward to working on our ideas with Mr
Graham and the rest of the school to lead Blacklands Primary in
their Eco adventure.

STphoerStsupCeorusntacri l

Our council are planning to promote Fit15 and the fantastic
school clubs on offer at Blacklands Primary. Look out for
posters around our school.

We will contact Sports Leaders from the community and
continue the links with Kilwinning Sports Club to attend
events and continue to promote an active lifestyle.

We aim to keep PE resources in order in the Gym Hall and
Playground areas. There will be a rota for council members
to be responsible and involved in this.

Later in the year the Sports Council will be involved in
planning and organising Sports Day.

The
Digital Donuts

This session we are trying to get more girls and boys to use
technology more of the time.

We need to use the Spheros and teach P1 how to use them.

Together with the literacy peeps, we are going to build a
Digiden in the library. We are going to record ourselves
reading books and arrange QR code links on display for
them to listen to. We hope the school will enjoy this and
relax.

We are going to update the rules for iPads and laptops.

We will think about a charter for using the Spheros.
