BSSC Racing
The first series of the 2005 season is already in the record books. We’re off to a great start with
more boats on the line than we’ve seen in years. We’ve gone to a golf handicapping style sys-
tem to rate boats & the competition is close. We’ve had MANY different boats place in the top 3
positions. Although some would argue the rating calculation is as clear as a gray November sky,
the system is working. Even if your goal is not to “race” it’s a great reason to get the boat out
from the dock, shake off a few spider webs, & improve your boat handling & sailing skills.
Here’s the results from the Spring series: Also racing in this series were:
1st—Saralysia, Chester Kolascz Frantic, Jack Bell
2nd—Unplugged, Tim Clayson Oh Real-ly, Jeff Harrison
3rd—Trilogy, Bob Bensen Freedom, Phil Hull
4th—Liberty, Gary Smothers Sea Pup, Bruce Leidal
5th—Oh Real-l-y, Jeff Harrison Idle Vice, Kirk Remsburg
6th—Sentient, Jim Giffin
7th—Kinship, Rob Edgecomb
The next races we have are Fourth of July Weekend (Holiday Series) &
the Summer series begins the following weekend.
We have three BSSC boats entered in the Port Huron to Mackinaw race:
Bill Weiner’s Controlled Chaos, Chester Kolascz’s Saralysia, & Tim Clayson’s Unplugged.
A number of other club members will be crewing on these boats including: Rick Johnson &
Chester’s three daughters: Sarah, Alysia, & Monya (plus two other crew from the Kalamazoo Col-
lege women’s sailing team for a crew of five women & two men!) & Bruce Leidal & his son, Brian,
will join Tim’s sons, Chris & Brian, on Unplugged.
Our Annual Bark Shanty Regatta is scheduled for August 27th. This is a long distance race,
typically to Lexington & back, & is our event to HOST in the Lake Huron Yachting Association
calendar when we have, hopefully, boats from other clubs coming in to race with us.
Thank goodness we sail
in the Great Lakes!

Bermuda race. This had to be one huge fish—

Cruising News
As you read this newsletter our first cruise of the season will be history. The Kincardine trip was
June 23rd – June 26. Three of this year’s boats planned the 2nd annual night sail. Other boats
were planning to arrive during the day. I am sure a great time was had by all. We will give a
synopsis of the trip in a later newsletter.
The next big event will be the trip to Bayfield. That is scheduled for July 16th & 17th. For those of
you new to cruising, this is a great opportunity to get your feet wet (no pun intended). If your
hesitant about venturing out on your own, we can hook you up to cross the lake with other boats.
We’ll have a group of boats leaving on Friday for a long weekend.
We had such a fun time last year with the potluck, & the musical entertainment by our very own
club members by the campfire. This year we will add a nautical trivia game so get out that
Chapman’s & do a little brushing up.
The summer cruise will leave on July 30th & rendezvous with other club members in St. Ignace on
August 1st & 2nd. From there, we will travel over to Lake Michigan with destinations of Beaver Is-
land, Charlevoix…….. This is a great time to practice those anchoring skills, build new friend-
ships, & just relax with good company.
The mystery cruise will most likely take place on September 10th in the club house where we will
gather to share stories & pictures from the past cruising season & future plans for the cruising
season of 2006.
Looking forward to seeing you on the water. Sign up sheets for the Bayfield, & Lake Michigan
cruises are in the club house. You can also email me at [email protected]
Happy Cruising, Everyone! Big fun & a must try:
