Smart-ilicious

Your smartphone can do a whole lotta things, but it’s not
smart enough to take care of itself. Let’s see what you can
do to increase the longevity of your everyday companion.

Crack is Wack

Whether it falls out of your hand or your pocket – sometimes
your phone acts as proof that gravity is still in operation.
When it hits the ground glass-first, you hesitate to pick it
up, because you’re afraid of the worst case scenario. When
you muster up the courage and finally pick it up, it turns
out your phone’s screen is shattered beyond words. ‘This
could’ve been avoided’ you think… But how?
Two words: deep pockets. And no, I don’t mean you have to
spend a lot of money on phone repairs. You literally should
put your phone in deep pockets. Shallow pockets (or the
complete lack of them) are mostly a problem of women’s
fashion. How many times have you seen half a smartphone
sticking out of somebody’s back pocket? Not only can it slip
out, but it can also get damaged when you accidentally sit
on it. Or, you could butt-dial your friend, grandpa, or even
the cops. Take the smartphone out of your shallow pocket,
and put it in a deep one. Don’t have any pants with pockets
suitable for your oversized mobile? Put it in a purse, a bag,
a bum bag or hang it on a lanyard (psst, they are making
a comeback in the fashion industry – you heard it here first).
Just don’t let it slip out.

Clean-app Job Tips

As your phone takes its sweet time loading a website, buffering a video, or
opening up Candy Crush, you reminisce about the time when you first got it.
You were in awe of how fast it did things, and you sang the praises of modern
technology. A couple of months later and that once absolute beast of a phone
works like a piece of junk. What went wrong?
Over time, your smartphone collects a whole lot of data. Every app you install
and every website you visit eventually starts storing files to access later.
These files are called cache files. For example, the Google logo on the Google
website does not load every time you visit Google. Instead, your phone (or
computer, tablet, laptop… refrigerator even) goes way back in time, finds the
google_logo.jpg file it stored the first time you visited Google.com and places
it there, so that (in theory) the website loads faster.
The problem is – the more apps you install and the more websites you visit,
the more cache gets stored in your device. Eventually, it piles up and can
significantly slow your phone down. This way, an app that normally takes up
50mb of your phone’s memory can grow in size twice, three times, or even
more over time. That’s not a big problem with just one app, but when you’ve
got ten or twenty of them, it gets pretty significant.
Thankfully, your cache can be cleaned. You can either do it manually, yourself,
which is a rather tedious job, or download one of the many cache-cleaners
from the App Store or Google Store, and let technology do the job. Along with
cleaning the cache files, many apps offer to get rid of duplicate files, empty
folders, or residual files from uninstalled apps. After a thorough clean-up job,
your phone should be A-OK.
