ZAGOROVSKY, Vladimir Pavlovich (b. 1925)
Soviet master and one of the world’s most successful correspondence chess
players. Winner of the 4th World Correspondence Championship held
1962-5. (W.R.H.)
ZAITSEV, Alexander Nikolayevich (75 June 1935-8 November 1971)
Soviet master and international grandmaster since 1967. Shared 1st place
at Sochi 1967 international tournament and also in the 1968/9 USSR
championship (but lost the play-off to Polugayevsky). Died at the age of
thirty-six following an unsuccessful operation on his foot. (W.R.H.)
ZAITSEV, Igor Arkadyevich (b. 27 May 1939)
Soviet grandmaster and theoretician. Gained international master title in
1970, and the grandmaster title in 1976. (W.R.H.)
ZAK, Vladimir Grigorievich (b. 1913)
Principal trainer of Leningrad players since 1958. Among his successful
trainees have been Spassky and Korchnoi. Co-author (with Korchnoi) of a
book on the King’s Gambit. (W.R.H.)
ZANDVOORT 1936
Euwe’s World Championship victory over Alekhine stimulated chess in
the Netherlands into almost non-stop activity. The most important of the
many events organized in this period was the international tournament at
Zandvoort (July 1936), the first tournament appearance of Euwe as title
holder. But whereas Alekhine had won every tournament he contested as
World Champion (with the sole exception of Hastings 1933/4), Euwe
could do no better than finish a creditable second to Fine, with Keres tieing
for third with Tartakower.
Leading scores: Fine 8|, Euwe 7|, Keres and Tartakower 6|, Bogol-
jubow and Maroczy 6. (W.H.)
ZATRIKION
By the eighth century chess had spread from Persia to Byzantium where it
became known as zatrikion, this being about as near as the Greeks could
get to the Persian chatrang. (H.G.)
521
ZATULOVSKAYA, Tatiana Yakovlevna (b. 8 December 1935)
International Woman master since 1961, USSR Women’s champion in
1962. In the following years she frequently finished high in competitions
for the Women’s World Championship, her best result being a share of
2nd place in the 1967 Candidates tournament. (W.R.H.)
ZNOSKO-BOROVSKY, Eugene Alexandrovich
(16 August 1884-31 December 1954)
Born in Russia, Znosko-Borovsky was a minor chess-master whose
writings on the game had an influence and an effect far beyond their
intrinsic worth. His best tournament result while in Russia was =3rd with
Salwe at the All-Russia tournament of Lodz 1908.
He left Russia for Paris at the Revolution and there earned his living as
a music critic. But he added to this by some highly profitable books on
chess in which he caught the contemporary taste to perfection. His chief
I work (or what was regarded as such at the time) was on the middle-game
and, despite its being based on an untenable and even infantile thesis,
it became regarded as a classic solely because it was the first in the field. His
subsequent works, mostly in the vein of ‘how not to, etc.’ were better and
more deserving of popularity.
Main works: The Middle Game in Chess, London, New York 1922; How
Not to Play Chess, London, Philadelphia 1931. (H.G.)
ZONAL TOURNAMENTS
See under interzonal.
ZONARES, John (d. 1118)
The former commander of the bodyguard of the Emperor of Byzantium.
He became a monk and retired to Mount Athos, whence he issued a ban
against the debauchery of playing chess: ‘Inasmuch as some of the
Bishops and clergy leave virtuous paths and play zatrikion (chess) or dice
or drink to excess, the Rule ordains that such shall cease to do so or be
excluded.’
Zonares was so strongly against chess that he also extended the ban to
laymen. (See byzantium.) (H.G.)
ZUBAREV, Nikolai Mikhailovich (10 January 1894-1 January 1951)
Moscow champion in 1927 and 1930, and competitor in many of the early
USSR championships. In his later years was very active in chess organ
ization in the USSR. Awarded the titles of international master in 1950
and International Judge in 1951. (W.R.H.)
ZUKERTORT, Johannes Hermann (7 September 1842-20 June 1888)
One of the most talented players of all time and possibly an English-
Prussian-Polish-Jewish grandmaster, the antecedents and early career of
Zukertort are shrouded in mystery, a mystery that was the more complete
522
in that the only account of these comes from Zukertort with a lack of
corroboration so great that perhaps he really was telling the truth.
Whatever the truth may be it is certain that he was a great chess-player,
one of those who carry with them the aura of certain genius.
According to Zukertort, then, he was bom in Lublin of mixed Prussian
and Polish descent and his mother was the Baroness Krzyzanovska.
Again according to Zukertort he studied chemistry at Heidelberg and
physiology at Berlin, claiming to have obtained his doctorate of medicine
at Breslau University.
His versatility was astonishing. He spoke nine languages including
Hebrew and was acquainted with several more. He had been a soldier,
having fought in several campaigns for Prussia against Austria, Denmark
and France; and once had been left for dead on the battlefield.
A music critic, editor of a political paper, on the staff of Bismarck’s
newspaper, the Allgemeine Zeitung-, gifted with a memory so colossal that
he never forgot a game he played; a consummate fencer, a blindfold
simultaneous player of undoubted repute (he had played as many as
fifteen simultaneously blindfold) and a grandmaster with justified pre
tensions towards the world title: most of these attributes we have to take
on Zukertort’s word. But there is enough left that is substantiated to show
his great importance in the history of chess.
His early chess career had much to do with Anderssen whom he beat in
a match, when Anderssen had grown old, in 1871 in Germany by +5—2,
having lost a previous match to him in Berlin in 1868 by + 3 — 8=1.
On the strength of his win over Anderssen in the second match he was
invited to play in a small but strong tournament in London in 1872 where
he came 3rd below Steinitz add Blackbume. Immediately afterwards he
played a match with Steinitz in which he was overwhelmingly defeated by
+ 1-7=4.
Despite this disastrous loss, which contained the seeds of further
disasters, Zukertort felt that London was his true home and decided to
stay in England, becoming a naturalized citizen in 1878.
His results in tournament and match play from then on showed a steep
upward curve. He was 2nd in London 1876, 1st in a small tournament in
Cologne 1877 and =2nd at Leipzig that year. He came 1st in a big tourna
ment at Paris 1878 where he tied with Winawer and won the play-off.
In 1880 he won a match in London against Rosenthal by +7—1=11
and in the following year he was 2nd to Blackburne in Berlin. He was no
less than 3 points behind Blackburne but he avenged this by beating him
in a match in London the same year by +7—2=5.
A comparative setback came in a great tournament at Vienna in 1882
when he tied for 4th place with Mackenzie, below Steinitz, Winawer
and Mason; but in 1883 came the peak of his career when he won 1st prize
in the great London tournament, 3 points ahead of Steinitz and 51 points
ahead of Blackbume who came 3rd.
The remarkable nature of his victory is to be seen from the fact that he
523
was sure of 1st prize with some two weeks still to go when he had a score
of 22/23. But, ominously, his health was giving way and he had been sus
taining himself by the use of drugs. He lost his last three games. It is very
probable that this high point in his career was also the time when his
health began to deteriorate under the excessive nervous strains imposed by
his constant and conscious efforts to outrival Steinitz.
Thus, though he had been warned by his doctor of the dangers, he
refused to abandon serious play and in 1886 he played his match for the
World Championship against Steinitz in the USA, losing by +5—10=5.
The strain was this time too great and he returned to England with his
health completely shattered.
This was reflected in his subsequent results: =7th in London 1886 and
=3rd in a smaller tournament at Nottingham that year; he had disastrous
results throughout 1887: =15th at Frankfurt-am-Main, 4th in a small
tournament in London and a match loss there to Blackburne by +1—5=8.
In the last year of his life he was =7th in London in 1888 and, playing
to the last possible moment, he died from cerebral haemorrhage after a
game at Simpson’s Divan.
Despite a career that stopped as it were half-way, Zukertort is clearly
one of the chess immortals and there is about his best games a sort of
resilient and shining splendour that no other player possesses. A famous
and irresistible example is the following game played at London in 1883.
White: Zukertort; Black: Blackburne

ZURICH 1934
A tournament (July 1934) on the Moscow 1925 model, seven Swiss players
meeting nine internationals, six of whom were the leaders of European
chess at the time. The result showed that the gap between Alekhine and the
younger generation had narrowed considerably since the days of Bled
1931, though he retained his superiority over his contemporaries. But the
sensation of the tournament was the reappearance of Lasker, after a nine-
year break since Moscow 1925.
Leading scores: Alekhine 13, Euwe and Flohr 12, Bogoljubow Hi,
Lasker 10. (W.H.)

ZVORIKINA, Kira Alekseeva (b. 29 October 1920)
International Woman master, three times Soviet Woman champion and
Honoured Master of Sport of the US S R 1957, Zvorikina is an engineer by
profession, living in Minsk where she also teaches chess.
She had a successful run in the cycle of Women’s World Championship
tournaments in the 1950s, coming 4/6 in the Candidates tournament at
Moscow in 1952, 4th in the Candidates tournament of 1955 and then, in
1959, won the Candidates tournament at Plovdiv in Bulgaria and with it
the right to challenge the champion, Bykova, to a match for the title the
following year. The match was won by Bykova by 8i-4|. (H.G.)
ZWISCHENZUG
Pronounced ‘tsvishentsook’, this means ‘intermediate move’. The refer
ence is to a forcing move overlooked by one player in the course of a
seemingly forced sequence of thrust and parry, or a series of exchanges.
Thus, in L. Steiner v. Helling, Berlin 1928:
White played l.QxN?,
expecting the sequence 1..,
B-N6?; 2. QxP+, RxQ;
3. R-K8 mate. Black made the
zwischenzug, 1.., B-R7 -f-! and
only after 2. K-Bl, B-N6!
when 3. Q x P+ fails to
3...RXP+. (W.H.)

Select Bibliography
For those who wish to read further about some aspect of chess, this bibliography
contains a select number of books from the vast literature available. I have
limited my choice to books in English and to those currently in print, occasion
ally guessing as to what will be in print when this book is published. This un
fortunately means that I am deprived of writing about a number of classics: for
example, H. J. R. Murray’s History of Chess and Tartakower’s Die Hyper-
moderne Schachpartie. The one apparently is now too expensive to reprint and
the other contains too much material that has dated. But both are masterpieces.

Index
Since the encyclopedia is arranged alphabetically, it is unnecessary to repeat the
headings in this index; however, within the headings are further subjects which
are described or referred to or which are subsections of the main heading. It is
these internal items that are detailed in this index; the reader can utilize it to
expand his knowledge of, for example, the life and achievements of such great
figures as Alexander Alekhine, Paul Morphy, Bobby Fischer, and so on.
Since some subsections are gathered under a general heading (e.g. Problems,
Endings and Endgame Studies), use of a cross-reference index is imperative.
References are to page numbers; it should be noted that when a subject appears
more than once with the same page-number reference, this means that it will be
found in more than one entry on that page. I have found only one abbreviation
essential: T. for tournament.
