What You Should Know

When to Self-Publish

Your Book

So you have written this great book, and now you are prepared to publish it.
First of all, congratulations! You have gone through the hardest part, creating
a great book. The next step is choosing when you should publish it. Now the
question is, when is the best time to publish your book?

Figuring out the best time to publish your book

First of all, there's no perfect day to publish your book; however, there are
better times to selfpublish your book. Releasing your book at the right time
of the year or even the right day can positively impact your sales. Here are
tips to help you pick the right time to publish.

Picking the best time of the year

The best months to selfpublish a book are January to February or June to
July. The first months of the year are excellent times to release your book
since it's still cold and people are spending more time at home. This means
there's more time to look for something interesting to pass the time. January
is considered the best time for selfpublishing, but February also works well.
Summer is another great time to release your book. Admittedly it might not
seem likely, but many people enjoy passing those sunny days at the beach or
on vacation reading a book.

While books make great gifts and book sales soar during the holidays, you
want to avoid selfpublishing your book during December. They are already
swamped with book releases from traditional publishers, which can drown
out selfpublished releases.

That said, it doesn't mean these are the only times you can publish. Different
genres perform well in different months. Romance, selfhelp, cooking,
design, and businessrelated books do quite well when published between
January and April. May to August works for adventure, fantasy, or travel
books. If you are writing an academic, paranormal, or horror book, it's best to
selfpublish it between September and November. Lastly, the holiday season,
December to midJanuary, is ideal for illustrated, novelty, quirky, and
children's books.

Picking the best day

The best days are the first three days of the week, Monday, Tuesday, and
Wednesday. Here's why. Traditional publishing houses often release new
books on Tuesdays, and new movies also seem to be released on Tuesdays.
Some even refer to it as Super Tuesday.

That said, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Only release your book once you feel it's ready, not because it's Tuesday.
Also, even though Tuesday is the ideal day, Monday and Wednesday also
work quite well. Pick your day and go for it, but avoid releasing your book on
weekends. This is because they are typically busy times, and your book
might get lost in the shuffle. You might choose to take things a notch higher
and selfpublish your book on a specific day of the month, such as the first
Tuesday of the month.

Remember:

International timelines also play a role in determining the best time to publish.
For instance, a bad time in America might not be bad in India or China.
There are a lot of English readers globally, so ensure you do enough market
research to capture your ideal audience. That said, all this effort is wasted if
you don't promote your book well.
