OPTIONAL RULES 204 STRUCTURED PBTA TURN ORDER Each player makes an AGI roll. Those who rolled a complete success go first, followed by those who rolled a mixed success, then those who rolled a failure. When two players achieve the same level of success, the PC with the better AGI goes first. If the two players in question have the same AGI, simply flip a coin or roll a die to determine who goes first. If desired, the GM can prompt players to roll once when they start a new session, then use those rolls as the de facto turn order indefinitely. Similar to PbtA Turn Order, enemies do not have their own turn (see above). PHASE-BASED TURN ORDER Combat consists of two phases: the PC phase and the enemy phase. When combat begins, the PCs should elect a single player to make an AGI roll with a maximum bonus of 4. On a mixed or complete success, the players go first. On a failure, the enemies go first. During the corresponding phase, all members take their own turns as described in Initiative. OPTIONAL RULES The final major section of this book aims to help GMs fine-tune the game to their liking with a selection of optional rules that were not touched on earlier in the book. Think of them as rule variations, or “mods” for the game if you’d like. If you want to add a custom rule to your game that isn’t listed here, remember the Golden Rule of any tabletop role-playing game. You, as the GM, are the final arbiter of all rules. If it makes sense to you and you think your players would like it, change anything and add whatever you’d like. OPTIONAL RULES • PbtA Turn Order • Structured PbtA Turn Order • Phase-Based Turn Order • All-Out Debuff • AoE Evasion • HP Variation • SP Variation • Tactical Movement • Classic Insta-Death • Memento Mori • Restlessness PBTA TURN ORDER Following closer to PbtA, there is no set turn order. Instead, the GM moves around the table and describes the circumstances or threats in front of each player, allowing them to act when appropriate. With this rule, enemies will not have a turn to attack; instead, enemies will counterattack if a complete success is NOT rolled during an attack against them: • On a mixed success, the player's attack will still land, but the enemy will strike back; this can be seen as "exchanging blows". • On a failure, the player misses entirely and the enemy strikes.

205 OPTIONAL RULES ALL-OUT DEBUFF This rule makes large groups of enemies tougher to sweep with All-Out Attacks; it will make your game meatier, with tougher and longer combat segments. When the PCs make an AllOut Attack, divide the damage they do by the number of enemies they are fighting, then apply this quotient to each enemy on the battlefield. AoE EVASION When an enemy uses an AoE attack such as Maragi or Mabufu, all players roll 2D6 to defend themselves. The GM may allow them to add an appropriate stat, such as END or AGI, as a modifier to this roll. On a failure, the player takes full damage from the attack. On a mixed success, they take half damage. On a complete success, they take no damage. HP VARIATION With this rule, the basic move “Command Persona” costs 1 HP to make. In exchange, all characters begin the game with an additional 5 HP. Swords characters begin with an additional 7 HP. When you’re making your character, ask your GM whether or not they plan on using the HP variation, so that you can calculate your HP accordingly. SP VARIATION Every magic skill (Agi, Zio, Maragi, Ziodyne, etc.) costs 1 SP. To account for the increase in SP expenditure, PCs start with 5 more SP than what is noted on their Arcana page. They will also gain 1 more SP than what they normally would when their character gains additional SP by leveling up. See page 16 for details on gaining SP by leveling. When you’re making your character, ask your GM whether or not they plan on using the SP variation, so that you can calculate your SP accordingly. TACTICAL MOVEMENT This optional rule adds grid-based movement to the game, similar to SMT: Devil Survivor. On their turn, PCs, humans, etc. may move up to 3 + WP squares. Shadows may move up to 3 + TL squares each turn. Attacks and abilities have ranges that vary by type: • All skills suffer -1 or -2 to hit rolls against enemies that are partially or fully obstructed, respectively. • Melee skills have a range equal to 5 + STR. • Melee weapons always have a range of 1 square, or 2 for spears or large weapons at the GM’s discretion. • Ranged skills have a range of 5 + AGI. • Ranged weapons have a range of 5 + Proficiency. • Magical skills have a range of 5 + MAG squares. • Skills that target all enemies or 1~4 enemies use a 3x3 diamond or square if they deal light or medium damage, and a 4x4 diamond or square if they deal heavy or severe damage. On a mixed success, your skill might not exactly hit where you intended, varying by one square in any direction. • Single-target supportive and healing skills have a range of 5, and support moves that target all allies/enemies can target any allies/enemies within 5 spaces of the caster. CLASSIC INSTA-DEATH This rule augments the effects of Bless and Curse skills. Instead of just dealing damage, these moves have a chance to kill opponents. On a complete success, the target of a Bless or Curse skill dies instantaneously. Otherwise, these moves have no effect. Weaknesses apply as normal. Reflecting these attacks simply nullify the effect; they do NOT give a chance to kill the caster. • -ha moves add +0 to this attack and cost 1 SP. • -ga moves add +1 to this attack and cost 2 SP. • -gaon moves add +2 to this attack and cost 3 SP. Note: The GM reserves the right to say that a particularly powerful enemy is not affected by these skills.

OPTIONAL RULES 206 MEMENTO MORI With this rule, death is no longer an impossibility. When a PC hits 0 HP, they get one last chance at life and end up at Death's Door. The dying character should make a Check without modifiers. If the PC in question has completed one or more S. Links (brought them to their maximum level of 5) they use their total number of completed S. Links as the modifier, up to a maximum of +4. • If the dying PC rolls a complete success, they gain one point of success. • If the dying PC rolls a mixed success, they gain one point of failure. • If the dying PC rolls a failure, they gain two points of failure. Dying PCs must make this death saving roll for each round of combat. If the PC accumulates three points of success, they are stable. PCs have their HP reset to 1 and are unconscious for a period of time determined by the GM (generally about an hour). If the PC accumulates six points of failure, they die. Dead characters are permanently out of the game unless a revival item or skill is used (such as Recarm or a Revival Bead). Any healing applied to the character on Death's Door will bring them back to life, but they will be left unconscious. Items and skills which revive a character (such as Revival Beads) will return them from Death's Door and allow them to act on their turn. RESTLESSNESS Each night you don’t sleep during in a row gives you a -1 to all 2d6 rolls. For example, staying up for two nights gives you a -2 to all rolls. Staying up for three gives you -3. The next night you sleep you recover from this stat penalty. This can stack infinitely, creating immensely large penalties that can cripple even the luckiest of rolls if you're not careful. Be sure to get a good night's sleep!
