MiHC cares about people. We also care about live music.
We care about reaching people who may have little, if any,
access to live music. Through versatile and highly personalised
performances we create moments and memories of sheer joy,
relaxation, engagement and sometimes, magic.
We’re proud to be able to provide so many of them.
RESEARCH “Instinctively we all seem to know that
music of one sort or another makes us
feel better. Having the privilege to be
the Patron of Music in Hospitals &
Care, I have seen at first hand just
what a profound effect their live music
concerts have on adults and children in
the healthcare system, including
clinical and care staff, family
and other visitors.”

FUNDRAISING AND SPOTLIGHTS Lord Mayor’s Appeal
We were one of the chosen charities for the
Lord Mayor’s Appeal from 2016 to 2017. Along
with the generous funding awarded to us, we
took part in the Lord Mayor’s Show in
November 2016. You might have seen our
musical double decker bus parading through
the City of London.
There have been plenty of fundraising activities
being done in partnership with the appeal;
Margaret Knight, MiHC musician, abseiled down
the Cheesegrater building on our behalf, and we
took part in City Giving Day across the charity!
London Marathon
We had an amazing group of people
running the London Marathon for us
this year and we loved cheering them
on from the sidelines.
Congratulations for all your fundraising
efforts and we hope you didn’t feel too
sore on our behalf!
Masonic Charitable Foundation
In March 2017 we received a grant from
the Masonic Charitable Foundation that would
allow us to deliver 72 concerts to elderly
people in care homes across England and Wales.
With a total pledged amount of £60,048, this
project will be making a difference to people in
healthcare for three years.
Everest / Hampton Court Flower Show
Everest Home Improvements chose us
as one of their represented charities at
the Hampton Court Flower Show in
2016, with a stunning show garden.
We have since received two donations
for concerts in conservatories and been
featured in their Daily Telegraph
newspaper supplement. We can’t wait
to see what future projects this exciting
partnership will bring!
Simplyhealth
Our partnership with Simplyhealth
has been instrumental in providing
music to residential care and
dementia homes.
These concerts have continued to
provide the opportunity for Dr
Nigel Marshall to expand his
research into the impact of live
music sessions in wider healthcare.
Aged Veterans Fund
We were thrilled with the outcome associated with
our Aged Veterans Fund Project ‘Heroes in Harmony’
this year. The funding enabled us to deliver over 1,600
concerts to the ex-service community right across the
UK. We were able to bring reminiscence favourites
and music hall classics to new care homes and
beneficiaries, plus their families, carers and staff.
Closer to home, we extended our successful ‘Tea and
Memories’ reminiscence concert series to include
ex-service men and women from our local community,
with larger events also held in tandem with Blind
Veterans UK and RBLI Village in Aylesford.
FUNDRAISING AND SPOTLIGHTS
2016/2017 was a personal best for Wales in
both the number of concerts we delivered and
the amount of money raised. Thanks largely to
an award from the Big Lottery, the Welsh office
generated over £150,000 for the charity last
year, and delivered 536 concerts throughout
Wales. As well as the Big Lottery, thanks must
also go to the People’s Postcode Trust and the
Scottish Power Foundation, both of which made
substantial donations.
To top it all, we won the 2016 Bryn Terfel
Foundation Award for promoting the arts in
social care in Wales.

Rebecca Evans and Friends
October 2016 saw a fantastic fundraising dinner and concert in
Cardiff, with contributions from our Patron Rebecca Evans,
Trustee Ingrid Surgenor, Welsh Ambassadors Tim Rhys-Evans
and Beverley Humphreys, and students from the Royal Welsh
College of Music and Drama.
The evening made just over £9,000 for MiHC, thanks in large
part to the generosity of Welsh Ambassador Christian Brown.
FUNDRAISING AND SPOTLIGHTS New Musicians Journey – Professional Development
In April 2016 MiHC received a grant from Arts Council England to develop a
pool of musicians in the North East to enable us to deliver a greater number of
more diverse concerts in the region.
Through a mentoring scheme, we brought together our more experienced
musicians and trainee musicians, to help equip them with the skills, techniques
and knowledge to perform quality interactive concerts in a range of healthcare
settings. Our North East concerts now have a strong local flavour and we’re
now better resourced to deliver our ambitious concerts programmes across the
North East region.
“The critical care environment is at
times chaotic, loud, busy and
stressful. This is changed in an instant to
that of calmness, concentration,
relaxation and quietness simply by the
presence of the musicians
and their performance”

Carol Singing in Trafalgar Square
Christmas 2016 saw the return of MiHC to Trafalgar
Square for a mix of festive carols. It was a lovely
opportunity to reach out to the community and get
everyone involved; even passers by joined us to sing
some well-known carols.
A special thanks goes out to Laura Stephenson, who
conducted our choir, and also to everyone that came
along to help.

FUNDRAISING AND SPOTLIGHTS Love at first note
A very special couple celebrated their fourth wedding
anniversary this year. Lauren and Edward met at the
Leonard Cheshire Disability Home in Llangollen, where
they are both residents, and were married exactly four
years ago on 14th September.
This year, they celebrated in style with a performance
by their favourite band, the 1920s swing band The
Charleston Charlies; it seemed onIy fitting that the band
who brought Lauren and Edward together could
celebrate it with them in such style.
“One lady smiled more during
this hour than in the last four
months. Audience, visitors and
staff alike commented on the
fantastic performance”

Morriston Music Week
A hugely successful pilot event took place in October 2016, where MiHC collaborated
with Morriston Hospital in Swansea to deliver live music to its patients in a project
supported by Western Power Distribution.
2017 also saw Morriston Music Festival. This was a two-week event held at Morriston
Hospital in Swansea which brought a range of concerts to the hospital, funded by
