CLUB UPDATE

Dear Members,

Can you believe we are almost at the end of 2020? Who would have thought that this year we
would experience a pandemic such as COVID-19? Although the Club was closed for almost 2 months
in March and April, we have been very fortunate to not have to close for a second time like many

other Clubs in the Atlanta, GA area. This has only been made possible due to everyone adhering to
the social distancing guidelines. Please continue to monitor yourselves for symptoms and to take
extra precautions now that we have entered Flu season.

In Club news, for the first time this year we had an outdoor Halloween event. Although the

Haunted Halloween Drive- thru has been postponed to November 11th, the Golf Cart Parade was new

and exciting. Congrats to those who won best decorated vehicle. We hope to garner more
participation in the years to come. Thank you to everyone who participated and came to watch the
parade as well. On November 7th, the Club will host it’s first in-person wine tasting since March of
this year. This is a registration only event. If you signed up, you should have received a confirmation
email after doing so. There are still quite a few people on the waitlist, if you can no longer attend,
please make sure to call the Front Desk at 770-46-1808 to avoid a no-show charge.

Moreover, there are a few changes to the end of year calendar this year. For the first time, the
Clubhouse, Tennis, and Golf will be fully closed on Thanksgiving Day. The MVL will not be open, nor
will the Turn Stand. If you have not placed your order yet for Thanksgiving, the last day to do so is
November 6th. In December, there will not be a Mingle Jingle, Santa Brunch, nor Home for the
Holidays event. Additionally, due to COVID-19 and social distancing guidelines, Santa will not be
seating children on his lap this year. As an alternative, we will have Santa’s Workshop Drive-thru on
December 6th. It will be a magical Winter Wonderland themed event that will include a waving Santa
Claus. You will also take home a Christmas craft to enjoy with your family. More information will be
released in the next week.

Additionally, I have an exciting announcement! Gary and I are finally getting married on November

8th. Yes, just a few days away. We are so excited to be tying the knot.

Marietta Country Club Journal—NOV—DEC 2020 Page 2

Due to COVID-19, after inviting all our family and friends, there was only a small number of

Member guests who we could invite. Many of you have been apart of our lives for over 12 years.

Please understand that we wish we could have a wedding where each and every one of you could

attend. Even though for safety reasons that is not possible, we would love for everyone to be apart
of it and we will be broadcasting the ceremony LIVE on our MCC Members Group Facebook page. If
you wish, please watch the ceremony online. I want to thank everyone for understanding as our top
priority is everyone’s safety.

Lastly, with a little over one month until the end of the year, and my official resignation from

the Club, I am truly saddened and overcome with emotions. On the other hand, I am glad to be
transitioning into my own business in the real estate industry. More importantly, I am excited for
the future of the Club. The Search Committee for the new General Manager has narrowed down
some exceptional candidates that will lead this Club in the right direction. You truly will be in good
hands. At the end of this year, I will continue to work with the new General Manager and the
Board of Directors to make the transition as smooth as possible.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving,

Christmas, and New Years.

Thank you for your continued support,

Keli Owens

HALLOWEEN

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

“Mummies rising from their tomb and witches on their magic brooms.” Take a
moment and visualize those words! Those words paint a vivid picture of the
excitement surrounding Halloween and allows your imagination to soar. This
is the exact skill of MCC’s very own member, John Willyard. He has been a
voice actor for over 25 years. Some of his career accolades include comedy
sketches for Jimmy Kimmel and as an announcer for the CMA Awards. “I
became an announcer for the CMA’s by sending in a demo on a cassette tape
back in 1996” said Willyard. Not long after he landed that role as well as
many others.

Since joining the Club in June, he has had a spectacular time using the Club
and getting to know the Members. To our surprise, when Willyard saw a
communication about the Haunted Circus Drive-thru, he contacted us and
volunteered to do a voiceover recording for the event. The Club was more
than excited for him to do this, and he did an exceptional job. Listen for
yourself, a small clip of the recording is available on our app and website. Go
to the calendar, click October 31st, and use the link to listen in! The full audio
will be played on November 11th at the Haunted Circus Drive-thru!

DIY Christmas Sugar Cookies

Joe Riggins
Yields about 3 dozen cookies (depending on size)

½ LB Butter
10 oz Sugar
1 tsp Salt
2 oz Eggs
2 oz Milk
½ oz Vanilla Extract
20 oz Cake Flour
1 Tlt Baking Powder

Cream butter, sugar & salt. Mix eggs, milk and vanilla. Sift flour and baking powder. Alternate wet with
dry, ending with dry ingredients. Chill and roll out about ¼ inch thick. Cut out cookie shapes. Brush
with milk and dust with sugar or cool cookies and decorate with royal icing.

Bake at 325 degrees about 15 minutes depending on size of the cookies. Slightly golden around the edg-
es.

Royal Icing
Yields about 3 ½ cups

3 oz Egg Whites
1 tsp Vanilla Extract
4 Cups Confectioners Sugar

In a mixer bowl combine the egg whites and vanilla and beat until frothy. Add sugar gradually and mix on
low speed until sugar is incorporated and beat until mixture forms stiff glossy peaks. This should take
approximately 5-7 minutes. Add food color if desired. For immediate use, transfer icing to pastry bag or
heavy-duty storage bag and pipe as desired. If using storage bag, clip corner. Store in airtight container
in refrigerator for up to 3 days.

GROUNDS

Greetings MCC Members,

Fall is here and the trees are starting to turn beautiful colors and shed leaves across the Golf
Course. The change from Summer to Fall also changes our focus from mowing grass every day to improving
and maintaining different areas across the entire property. One of the most common questions I am asked
as I interact with Members of the Club is “What projects are coming up?” Great question!

When it comes to projects we try to focus the majority of the work in the winter months because
cooler weather typically means less golfers to interrupt. Some projects we are able to do “in-house”, while
larger projects are contracted out, with the concrete cart path repairs the most recent such improvement
completed. The Grounds Committee meets monthly to discuss current issues on the Golf Course as well as
formulate a strategic plan for long term projects and improvements. The suggested improvements are
then presented to the Board of Directors to be approved and budgeted for in years ahead.

Each year our staff undertakes many in-house projects to continue improving the Golf Course. Soon
we will begin to build a walking path from #3 green to #4 tee box. By installing an aggregate walk path as
we have used in the past, it will help to greatly improve travel between the holes. Record rainfall this year
has filled the creek with silt on #13 so we will need to dig it out in order to prevent further silt deposits in-
to our irrigation pond. Tree work will also continue as we remove trees shading tee boxes and greens. Re-
moving lower hanging limbs to raise the tree canopy on several trees across the property will be an ongo-
ing project, as well as cleaning up areas like the overgrown Azalea bushes directly right of #1 green.

The Tennis Facility will also see construction activity as we are about to start the process of building
a new bathroom. This bathroom building will be located on the East end of the tennis complex near the far
clay courts. The current storage building which houses the tennis maintenance equipment will be removed
and incorporated in the rear of the new structure.

One of the projects really gaining traction is the improvements to holes #14 and #16. The area
between these holes is full of trees, very rough terrain, and is almost unplayable if a ball is hit left on either
of these holes. We will remove enough trees to sod the entire area between the holes. This will also
improve the health of #14 fairway by providing more sunlight to the turf, possibly removing the need for
cart path only restrictions! More information on this project will come in the weeks ahead!

Always looking forward to seeing you at the Club,

Mark Hayes

ThanksGIVING Classic

MARIETTA COUNTRY CLUB TEES OFF TO HELP THE MARIETTA POLICE ATHLETIC LEAGUE BY
HOSTING THE SEVENTH ANNUAL ThanksGIVING GOLF CLASSIC!

Marietta Country Club will host its 7th Annual ThanksGIVING Golf Classic on Monday, November 9, 2020 at Marietta Country Club
Golf Course in Kennesaw, GA. Major sponsors include Liberty Furniture Industries, Inc and the Kiwanis Club of Marietta. Through
sponsorships, silent auctions, and wine tastings, the tournament raised over $100,000 last year for KSU Cares, an organization that
offers support to Kennesaw State University students who have experienced homelessness, food insecurity and/or the foster care
system.

Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the Marietta Police Athletic League (PAL). The tournament will kick off with registration
at 9:00 a.m. and a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m. A silent auction will be held in conjunction with the tournament offering a great
opportunity to bid on a number of golf and non-golf related items. Following the tournament, an awards ceremony and raffle will
be held.

About Police Athletic League (PAL)

Since Marietta PAL began in 2007, PAL has served more than 6,500 youth with
safe, affordable and accessible youth programming. For these families who
need it most, PAL relies on grants, donations and partnerships to subsidize 90%
of the cost of programs during the school year and 75% of the cost of summer
programming. Up to 500 Marietta/Cobb youth ages 5-17 participate in PAL an-
nually at the Hugh L. Grogan Jr. Community Center, centrally located near
downtown Marietta.

PAL currently offers competitive and skill-building sports programs including
boxing, basketball, martial arts, track & field, dance, and cheerleading.
However, PAL offers more than just sports. Marietta PAL also focuses on aca-
demics, positive character development, valuable leadership, and life skills
throughout PAL’s afterschool, mentoring, summer camp, and sports programs.

CHRISTMAS LETTER

MARIETTA COUNTRY CLUB

November 1, 2020
Dear Fellow Members,

On behalf of the staff at Marietta Country Club, the Board of Directors would like to wish you and
your family a safe and happy Holiday Season. It has been our privilege to serve you this past year and we hope
that each experience at the Club has been exceptional. Our enjoyment of the Club is in large part due to the
Club staff who work diligently on our behalf year-round. This includes our very visible “front-of-the-house”
staff and those working behind the scenes we seldom get to interact with, yet their excellent service is what
makes the Club a truly outstanding environment. Even more so with the pandemic this past year, the staff
have fostered a wonderful club experience. Staff have been here early in the morning, late at night, and on
holidays and weekends to ensure we and our guests experience Marietta Country Club at its finest.

Each Fall, Members have an opportunity to express their appreciation to the Club’s employees. For
those Members who would like to show their appreciation to the staff at the Club during the Holiday Season,
an Employee Christmas Fund has been established. Marietta Country Club is a non-profit organization, and
we make every attempt to minimize operational expenses. The monies received for the Christmas Fund are
distributed to all kitchen, cleaning, maintenance, office, and service staff based on the length of service to the
Club. Our employees have always been so thankful for the generosity the Members have shown int the past
and will be grateful for any amount received this year.

If you would like to participate this year, please complete the bottom portion of this letter with a suita-
ble gift of appreciation. You may also send an email to [email protected] to
authorize a charge to your Club account. In doing so, please make sure to indicate that it is for the
Employee Christmas Fund. Your gift will be reflected on your Club statement. To adequately recognize each
of these 150+ staff members, our goal is to increase both the participation levels of the Membership and the
average gift. Your consideration to give expresses your personal acknowledgement of the services of the loyal
employees who make the Club function so well and is greatly and universally appreciated.

Best wishes to you and your family for a happy and safe Holiday Season.

Sincerely,
Frank Howard

President of the Board of Directors
Marietta Country Club
