Bottle tops, plastic containers, raveled
hessian, superannuated CD players, tubes,
chopsticks - all take on new life in the hands
of Tim Sedgwick.

Re-imagined and recycled, these found
objects are fashioned by Tim and artist /
mentor Geoff Bonney into a menagerie
that sits somewhere between petting zoo
and fevered dream.

With drawings as the bedrock of his practice,
Tim works with Geoff to translate his ideas
into ‘sculpturals’ that reflect his sense of
humour and uniquely optimistic outlook.
The collaboration that began in 2012 has
grown to become a partnership, with Geoff
providing engineering support and Tim
providing the ideas, selection of materials,
construction, and finishing touches.

Tim Sedgwick is an artist working in the
tradition of Art Brut, the label originally used
to designate “uncooked” artwork – that
which is created outside the boundaries of
official culture. Sometimes termed naïve or
raw art, this genre is now commonly known as
outsider art – and is the subject of the
attention of avid collectors, major institutions,
and specialist museums worldwide.

While Simon Rodia’s Watts Towers may be
the most well-known example of outsider
art, Tim Sedgwick sits solidly at the other end
of the spectrum amongst work of a more
domestic scale. And though created in our
own backyard – or at least, in Learmonth –
Tim Sedgwick Sculpturals illustrate the
observation that this is work “….produced
from the depths of their own personalities
and for themselves and on one else, works
of outstanding originality in concept, subject
and techniques. They are works which owe
nothing to tradition or fashion.”*
