Uawa is a small town located on the east
coast of the north island.

The town of Uawa is 55 kilometers from
Gisborne.

The Endeavour arrived into the bay at Uawa
on October 24, and stayed for 6 days until its
departure on October 30, 1769.

James Cook named a number of places on his
travels. One of these was Cook’s Cove in Uawa.
Its original name was Ōpoutama.

James Cook gifted some small blue beads to
the home people of Uawa, similar to the one
in the picture.

One of the reasons Uawa is famous is because of
the long pier. It is 660 meters long. Uawa is also
known by another name, Tolaga Bay. This name
was also given by James Cook.
