5 Te Kitenga o Hina Lane Gallery 14 October 2023 – 28 April 2024 Be captivated by the exhibition Te Kitenga o Hina as it shares the sacred seasons of Aotearoa: Takurua (Winter), Kōanga (Spring), Raumati (Summer), and Ngahuru (Autumn). Discover the significance of the māramataka, the revered Māori lunar calendar, as it guides māra kai and Māori agricultural practices. In Taranaki, initiatives are underway to revive ancient food preservation customs. Explore the processes, challenges, and triumphs behind these revitalisation efforts, and witness how the significance of māra kai is being passed down to future generations. Enter Te Kitenga o Hina through a tunnel where you can look up into the night sky and immerse yourself in the celestial world. Be mesmerised by the beauty of the moon and its different phases, complemented by stunning star constellations that determine planting, harvesting, and seed saving. Step into the four seasons and engage with interactive experiences. Through “A Journey to Sustainable Food” explore how the principles of the māramataka and sustainable food practices intertwine. Scan produce for information on its origin, cultivation, process, and harvest timeline, as well as receiving tips on how to grow sustainably. This exhibition is developed in collaboration with the local community and showcases taonga Māori from Puke Ariki’s rich collection of tools used in māra kai.

6 Māwai kē atu Illuminating Sacred Wisdom Wall Gallery Nov 18th 2023 – July 21, 2024 Ōpunake High School, Waitara High School and Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Ngaruahinerangi proudly present. ‘Māwai kē atu’. A collaborative community project facilitated by arts practitioner Haorooro Ki Taihua Hond-Goffe that takes rangatahi from these selected schools on a physical and spiritual journey via air, land and finally to the studio. Māwai k`ē atu is a reference to a very imporant question that we all must answer. “Who shall take responsibility for safeguarding our earth mother Papatūānuku and her resources when our respected elders leave this world?” It is the responsibility of each generation to ensure the successful transmission of sacred knowledge. Taking the seeds of hope to restore balance within te tai ao (environment), moving forward prosperously as a collective into the bright future for the benefit of the many generations to come. Through this visual art outcome we are invited to think of our connections, our sense of place, our link to the land and the stories that shape us and this very place. 7 State of Nature: Picturing the Silent Forest Temporary Gallery, Ground Floor, Puke Ariki Museum 7 April 2023 – 5 November 2023 Explore the stories of our native forests through the botanical paintings of artist Fanny Bertha Good (1860-1950) and the experiences of her family in colonial Taranaki. Fanny Good was born in north Taranaki and lost her hearing as a teenager after contracting measles. While Taranaki’s native forests were being cleared to make way for farmland, she spent her time exploring the bush near her home in Ōeo and later Hāwera, collecting native plant specimens for her work. Puke Ariki holds over 200 of Fanny’s paintings, with a large selection showcased for the first time in State of Nature. Working with oil paint rather than the more traditional media of watercolour, her depictions of native flora and fungi are more expressive than those of other botanical artists of her time. Yet her attention to detail means that many of the species she painted can be clearly identified, providing a unique record of our botanical landscape. Several of the species that Fanny painted are now in decline or threatened with extinction. Through her work and creative responses by four contemporary local artists, discover the role that art can play in bringing attention to the state of our natural environment. Follow a multi-sensory journey through the trees, learn what makes them so special, and discover how you can help protect and grow our native forests today. 8 50 Years of Clay Te Pua Wānanga o Taranaki | Taranaki Research Centre On show now - June 2024 With 24 artists on display, 50 Years of Clay supports New Plymouth Potters in celebrating their 50th anniversary. New Plymouth Potters provides a shared studio and exhibition space in Te Henui Vicarage for over 100 members, supporting them to develop and refine their skills. Each year the group has a shared exhibition and invites a well-known potter to judge the entries. The supreme award winners of these exhibitions, from 1989 through to 2003, were collected by the museum. The winning ceramics from 2004 to 2023 have all been lent to complete the selection for this exhibition. The supreme award winners are all displayed in 50 Years of Clay, showing developments in style over time and recognising many integral past members of the club. An exhibition catalogue dives deeper into the history of the club and the potters behind the works. The ceramics are displayed throughout Te Pua Wānanga o Taranaki | Taranaki Research Centre, second floor of the library and in the main foyer of the museum.

9 Flash Back: Fashion Photography in New Zealand 1930-2015 Lane Gallery, Puke Ariki Museum On show now - 1 October 2023 Flash Back: Fashion photography in New Zealand 1930-2015 is an exhibition of the work of 25 fashion photographers who have contributed to the development and articulation of our unique New Zealand fashion identity. Flash Back opened in June 2017 as part of the Auckland Festival of Photography. Images from all eras were curated into magazine style editorial around shared themes such as light, urban, narrative and were projected as a floor-to-ceiling immersive magazine with turning pages. Because fashion is synonymous with newness and change, its photographers have always been leaders in cultural reproduction and advancement. By bringing together 80 years of fashion photography, Flash Back allows us to see how our society and identity has changed; how we see ourselves and what we value. The exhibition tracks the evolution of our fashion photography industry - moving from studio work, to street photography, to narrative storytelling to the current day where photographers are navigating the challenges of creating distinction in the overload of images that is social media and the universal availability of postproduction technology. Curated by Doris de Pont and Kelly Dix Supported by Foundation North, the Lion Foundation, and the Gus Fisher Gallery Image credit: Karen Inderbitzen-Waller & Delphine Avril Planqueel
