The Show

While athletes and students
return to normalcy, actors
and actresses
miss two years of
school musical productions.

Alex Roseman, staff

The Heights Drama Club and classes had successfully performed plays in
the Keifer Auditorium for as far back as any teacher or administrator
can remember. Each spring, after months of auditions and practice,
the curtain opened for the spring musical, typically three shows, that
welcomed students, family, and the general public. Like many things, however,
COVID ended the production last year.
"Despite not attending Heights middle school and high school for the last
two years, I remember having good experiences with the theater productions I
did see before. It’s unfortunate to hear that there weren't any productions this
year." - Dylan Daves, Hasbrouck Heights resident, said.
The cast of Annie were only three weeks away from performing when the school
first closed because of COVID. The closure was particularly difficult for senior
cast members who, unlike athletes, only have one performance each year.
“It is extremely difficult to think about the students who graduated last year,
and those who are graduating this year without having the experience of being
involved in the high school play for two years in a row,” Paula Jacobs, drama
teacher and play director, said.
There are a total of seven seniors who, between last year and this year,
will have missed their final performance due to COVID closures and regulations.
In a normal year, the cast members of the play would have rehearsal for two to
three days a week for at least two hours in either the auditorium or the media
center from 6:00 to 8:00PM. Some days the cast focuses on perfecting their
places on stage and their lines, other nights they are learning the choreography
of a dance or the notes to a song. While there is a certain ‘theater crowd’ that
typically embodies the cast, the play always seems to encourage others to try
something new.
“ It taught me to step out of my comfort zone and try new things even if
those things aren’t something I'd normally be a part of,” Ashley Annacharico,
Heights alum, said.
Nick Zarillo from the class of 2020 was supposed to perform as Daddy

in it. So I started pencil drawing and using different paints to see what
fit my artwork best and how I can express myself through art in a
beautiful way,” said Claudia Degennaro, sophomore, said.
Many have taken up art as a new hobby with some even painting
or testing their hand at photography. The world of visual arts has
been no stranger to Hasbrouck Heights’ doors with an excess of talent
running through the art room every year. Annually, Heights has an
art showcase to display the pieces of it’s talented students, but due to
the pandemic this year’s showcase was halted. Many of the high school
artists have gone unnoticed, but their creating has not ended. What
follows are the amazing pieces and designs presented by the artists
of Hasbrouck Heights Highschool as well as their feelings on artistic
expression.

here in Heights.

Although publically Moretti is known as a ruthless

mobster, his life in Heights told a different story.

Linda and Kevin Mullins, who both grew up in

Hasbrouck Heights also knew of the house.

“It was rumored for years that there were tunnels

underneath his house located on Summit Avenue between

Harrison and Roosevelt.”

Lenny Bataglia, however, a home builder who

purchased the lot that was once the backyard to Willie

Moretti’s home believes the rumors to be untrue and
explained that he found no tunnels. “But I did find a hidden
room underground beneath the backyard cabana.”

Bataglia also shared a story told to him by the

Corso family, whose mother originally purchased the

property from Moretti . He was told that “When Moretti

sold his house to the Corso family, he made it clear that he’d
be back for flower pots. Apparently, those pots contained
thermoses filled with $100 bills buried in them.”
Chief Colaneri also mentioned that Moretti lived in

one other location in town. ¨On the corner of the Boulevard

and Belle Ave. It was rumored that while he lived on Belle,

he had security living across from him.¨

Moretti found himself involved in the Kefauver

Hearings in 1950. The hearings were an investigation,

led by the Senate, into organized crime. Moretti, ever the

character was cracking jokes and telling stories during the
hearing. When asked how long he had been in the mafia,
he famously replied “What do you mean, like do I carry a
membership that says “Mafia” on it?” Moretti, however, was
the only mobster at the hearings who didn’t use his 5th

Amendment right which provides protection from self-

incrimination. While Moretti’s testimony was entertaining,

it didn’t give up any pertinent information – his bosses,

however, were far from pleased. Moretti had been suffering
from syphilis and many in the mafia believed that this was
causing him to become mentally unstable. Moretti’s doctor,
a Dr. Morici even testified on Moretti’s behalf that, “At that
time [1943] I had to treat him because he was becoming

mentally unbalanced.” In addition to syphilis, Moretti was

treated for malaria, heart problems, hypertension, and even

almost missed his testimony due to a profuse nose bleed

that stemmed from an ongoing nasal hemorrhage.

Others argue that Moretti simply enjoyed

entertaining the committee, toying with them. Moretti

admitted to making his living legally, but explained that
he was aquainted with other oganized crime figures who
he reffered to as “not bad people” He continued, admitting

a friendship with Al Capone and explained that he was

“bipartisan” - that he associated with both criminals and

politicians. In participating in the hearings, however,
Moretti broke the mafia’s “code of silence”.
Barbara Troisi, a young adult in 1951 said “I was

living in Fort Lee when Moretti died. We all assumed he was

a rat but it turns out he never really snitched.”

Moretti’s life, like that of many involved in

organized crime came to a violent end just a few miles

that Moretti was a “witness” in a crime probe.
Moretti’s funeral service was conducted at
Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, though local
stories explained the church was outraged and upset that
they were to perform the mass on a man of his character.
Our school has a real connection to the funeral through
Catherine Cassidy and Linda Condal, Heights teachers,
whose parents both played a role in the funeral. Cassidy’s
mother performed in the Corpus Christi choir and was
present at the funeral mass. Condal’s father, a patrol officer
at the time, is present in the famous photo of Moretti’s
casket being taken out of Corpus Christi.
The funeral, much like Moretti’s life, was one of excess.
Flower cars and mourners clogged the Boulevard. Moretti
was eventually buried in St. Michael’s Cemetery, just a few
miles down the road in South Hackensack.
Over 5,000 mourners, including children attended
his funeral. This resulted in a circus-like atmosphere that
required police intervention. Vines and trellises were
torn down and gravestones were knocked over - it was
estimated to be $700 worth of damage.
A 1951 New York Times article explains that
Henry Morocco, the under-taker, found the crowd so dense
that he could not get Moretti’s $5,000 bronze coffin to the
family mausoleum, he told the crowd ¨If you people haven´t
the decency to move, I won’t bring him in. I’ll ride him
around all day if I have to. I can be stubborn too.¨
With the help of Lodi policemen, room was made for
Moretti´s family. Hundreds of mourners had already been
at the St. Michaels cemetery just moments before it opened.
Hundreds turned into thousands once the family arrived.
Moretti’s life in Heights was riddled with both his
exploits as a mobster and his generosity as the town’s most
famous resident. As time has passed, however, his impact
on the town is seemingly lost, with most students unaware
of the neighbor that once lived in our town.
“I had no idea Willie Moretti lived in our town
and even had his funeral here. The whole thing seemed like
a big spectacle for the time but now no one talks about it.
Especially in our small town where nothing really happens.
It’s crazy. What else is there to talk about but that?!,” Kaitlyn
Yang, sophomore, said.
To some, Moretti is now just a part of town lore.
“I think that knowing that someone important
from the Mafia came from our town isn’t necessarily
shocking. I don’t think it’s a bad thing and I honestly
think it’s fascinating history to an extent about our town,”
Samantha Migrino, senior, said.

Moretti: Not one to be praised

Willie Moretti’s name is undoubtedly one that’s etched in the legacy of
Hasbrouck Heights, but is he to be revered? Memorialized? Commemorated? Yes, in
a sort of way the man did a lot of good in this town. However, I don’t believe he’s an
individual that should be praised. Many believe that the end justifies the means. I am not
one of those individuals. Violence is not something I believe Hasbrouck Heights stands
for, so it’s affiliation with Moretti’s mafia history and his own means to an end boggles
my mind. Mafia business is something many find on the silver screen and television
shows, but knowing a member of the mafia resided in our town brings it down to reality.
Violence, thievery and other crimes are ripe within said business, violations of respect
and individuals and their property as well. There’s not much to be said. It’s plain and
simple. Individuals and organizations such as this are not to be praised, but rather found
interesting in a light no longer found in reality.

Moretti: an important part of our history

Growing up in a family where “The Godfather” would be playing on the TV every
Saturday, as it was my father’s favorite film, finding out that the man who the film was named
after — Willie Moretti — not only lived in my town, but less than one hundred yards from
my front steps was quite the information. Despite his mob involvement and engagement in
violence, Moretti was an important part of Hasbrouck Heights’ history.
From his charitable works at Corpus Christi Parish to the momentous documentation
of his funeral at the church, Moretti’s legacy in the town is shown. His name — quite literally
embezzled into our town — sits engraved on a metal leaf (part of a tree that commemorates
contributors to the parish) at the entrance of the Corpus Christi School building to the chapel,
marking his momentous contributions to the church. Despite how this money may or may
not have been obtained through mafia violence, Moretti progressed the Hasbrouck Heights
community through contributions like this which helped to give back to others. Photos of
his funeral procession on the Boulevard outside Corpus Christi are also perhaps some of the
most iconic photos taken in our town.
Although Moretti’s association with nationally historical violence, I think it is
important for the Hasbrouck Heights community to recognize and be aware of his involvement
in our town’s history. It is also important to bring light to roots of violence in our town when
historicizing periods of history such as the mafia, in order to try to prevent such violence
from repeating itself. By bringing the reality of Moretti to our community, it not only shows
how violence can still be laced with generosity (such as through his contributions to Corpus
Christi) but also how real and local that American history and violent crimes can be to each
of us individuals. Moretti’s legacy as a Hasbrouck Heights resident is one that members of
the town should be aware of, as he sits in the roots of our community and embezzled into
the leaves of Corpus Christi.”

A recap of the bowling team’s winter success

Spring 2021 // pilot’s log // Hasbrouck Heights High School traditional schedule, the bowling program was able
to look in a positive direction and be optimistic. In
fact, this season was a pleasant surprise for the young bowlers
who were able to avoid much of the seasonal troubles and
produce winning results. Even with all the new protocols it
seemed that the athletes were able to focus on their craft and
not all of the changes that surrounded them.
Dave Rispoli, head coach of the bowling program,
spoke of his team’s performance.
“I don’t think the changes affected them much. Regular
season matches never drew crowds. A few parents would
show up to the matches. Crowd excitement was never part
of the matches to get the kids pumped up. The one thing that
may affect them is bowling on a different pair of lanes than
their opponent,” Rispoli, said.
Damiano DeCandia, junior bowler, agreed.
“As far as COVID, it hasn’t really impacted how the team
played. The only things that changed was being unable to have
the JV come to watch our matches, and the parents as well.
