Service-learning programs, however, offer a practical solution. They provide hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of developing generic skills, such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership while fostering a sense of social responsibility and empathy. This research discusses the impact of service-learning programs on developing generic skills among undergraduate students, specifically focusing on a case study of UTM Caring Society students in Malaysia who organised service-learning programs for Kampung Tampok Laut, Benut community. Through these programs, they built a prototype of a grading machine for separating clams. They also created a 3D landscape prototype for the Tampok Laut Recreation Park conservation to improve the village's visibility and branding. Students' competency in organising the service-learning program for the local community was evaluated by collecting feedback from 50 participants of the Kampung Tampok Laut community in Benut. Feedback was also gathered from the UTM Caring Society students to investigate the effectiveness of servicelearning programs in bridging skill gaps among students. The findings confirm that service-learning programs effectively address the disparities in generic skills among students. Therefore, service-learning programs provide a promising approach to help students develop generic skills essential for success in the challenges of the competitive world, offering a practical and effective solution to the generic skills gap. KS 02 INCULCATING LEADERSHIP SKILLS THROUGH UNIFORM BODIES: EXPLORING THE ROLE OF ROTU AT IIUM SUZANA SUHAILAWATY MD SIDEK 1 AHMAD ‘IZZUDDIN YUNUS2 1Department of Social Foundation and Educational Leadership, Kulliyyah of Education, International Islamic University Malaysia, 53100 Gombak, Selangor, Malaysia 2Student Development and Community Engagement Division, International Islamic University Malaysia, 53100 Gombak, Selangor, Malaysia Leadership manifests through interactions involving power dynamics and the capacity to guide and influence others. Various methods and activities can foster leadership skills, with students benefiting notably from participating in co-curricular activities provided by their educational institutions. Given the critical role of leadership abilities in addressing graduate unemployment—where many recent graduates fall short of employers' expectations due to insufficient leadership skills—this research focuses on the leadership development potential of student involvement in the Reserve Officer Training Unit (ROTU) extracurricular activities. A quantitative survey was deployed, employing questionnaires to gather data from 88 second-year until fourth-year ROTU students. The collected data underwent analysis using descriptive statistics and oneway ANOVA via SPSS software. The findings indicate a modest perception among students regarding ROTU's contribution to leadership skill development. Additionally, the one-way ANOVA results revealed no notable disparity in leadership skill development across different faculties. These results highlight the need for enhancing student leadership development to ensure more satisfactory outcomes. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia 4Pusat Asasi Pertahanan, Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia, 57000 Sungai Besi, W.P. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Since its inception, Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) has prioritized students’ character development, given its strong association with the military. Therefore, defining the concept of Leaders of Character (LOC) for UPNM has been of utmost importance to ensure it translates into excellent character assessments for the students. This study focuses on defining Leaders of Character to provide guidelines that support the university’s mission and vision. Unfortunately, there is a lack of information to assist in defining these attributes, resulting in various perspectives that hinder proper assessment. Therefore, basic doctrines from military services worldwide have been used as the fundamental basis for these arguments, which are then adapted to fit UPNM’s local culture and principles. The resulting definition establishes a common understanding among administrators, academics, and students, leading to greater appreciation of the concept. This can then be used to create a standard character assessment or measurement tool to gauge the performance of students with regard to LOC.
