Public Sculpture and Environment
in UiTM Shah Alam Campus

Ramlan Abdullah

It is with great gratitude that I express my
gratitude to Allah, the Most Gracious and Most
Merciful, for His blessings in providing us with
this fantastic opportunity to come together at
this momentous occasion. I am proud that the
project was successful within such a
challenging operating environment due to the
Covid 19 restrictions.

This project is an initiative on beautification
for UiTM Shah Alam campuses. The Office of
the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Infrastructure &
Infostructure Development) invited the
Faculty of Art & Design to work as committee
members. This artistic research project is led
by Assoc. Prof. Ramlan Abdullah and teams,
registered as artistic research projects under
RMC with the project title "Public Sculpture
and Environment in UiTM Shah Alam Campus."
The title for this sculpture is "Nexus". The
sculpture is located at the Seroja roundabout,
which is formed with steel quality and utilises
solar technology for its lighting up at night.

Sculptors created the sculpture for the public
and UiTM landmarks that represented the
institutional setting. Every individual can
attain excellence through the transfer of
artistic knowledge without eliminating moral
values to become a professional, such as a
university tourist or research institute. In order
to be successful, it must be founded on
implicitly or explicitly shared meanings
between the artist and the community and
consist of actions or works carried out on
behalf of the community as a whole, according
to the artist. This point is emphasized,
especially by the expanding notions of
sculpture as seen concerning architecture and
landscape.

There have been ripple effects throughout
business and the economic order as a result
of COVID-19. Towards the end of 2019, a
viral flu outbreak began in Wuhan, China,
but quickly spread across the globe. People
all over the world have been exposed to the
virus, with many succumbing to it and
losing their lives. Countries all over the
world have implemented lockdowns,
economies all over the world have been
disrupted and supply chains all over the
world have been disrupted. As a result, we
have had to become more purpose-driven,
resilient, and adaptable in order to meet the
challenges of the pandemic era as well as
the post-COVID-19 era.

Alhamdulillah, the sculpture at Seroja
roundabout, which one of the UiTM Shah
Alam campus beautification initiatives was
a success, was fabricated. The sculpture can
bring about change in the public realm and
create a community. It changes the entire
public space and directly draws attention.
People stand around it, touch it, and take
photographs of it, which are all signs of
interaction. It creates a sense of place
because the sculpture is the main attraction
at the roundabout.

Alhamdulillah, the sculpture at Seroja
roundabout, which was a success for one of
the UiTM Shah Alam campus beautification
initiatives, was completed. The sculpture
has the potential to affect change in the
public realm and to foster community. It
alters the entire public space and draws
direct attention to itself. People gather
around it, touch it, and photograph it, all of
which indicate interaction. Because the
sculpture is the main attraction at the
roundabout, it creates a sense of place.

Rational of Sculpture | Nexus

“NEXUS” is a connection or series of
connections linking two or more
things. This sculpture represents the
growth between students, lecturers,
and all other individuals who are
constantly learning from each other
in UITM. We are all interconnected
with each other just like the concept
of this sculpture. All parts and
pieces are carefully calculated and
connected with, to form a structure
that shaped like a seed that is
constantly growing into a full grown
plant. I was inspired by the promise
of seeds. There’s a deep metaphor in
the idea that something tiny can
transform itself into something
immense. If we plant an acorn, it will
grow into a giant oak, but if you
plant a sheep nothing happens but
decay. And I think the metaphor of
seed is deeply ingrained in our
culture. Just like our students, they
come to UITM to seek for knowledge
and growth in themselves. With the
right guidance, they are able to
grow and become an important part
in our society.
