Introduction:

The Meaning of "I AM"





"I AM" Two small, yet very powerful words. Two of the smallest
words in our vocabulary, still they are the words that God
used to describe Himself. Sometimes words can be limiting; however, these two
words are used to describe a limitless God. This is how God chose to reveal His
character, nature and His very being to His people.

Most of us know the occasion of God appearing to Moses and speaking to him
through the burning bush. If not, we'd encourage you to read Exodus, Chapter 3.

Let's start at verse 13:

Exodus 3:13-15
13 "Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of
your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what
shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to

say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” God also said to Moses, “Say to

the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of
Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’“This is my name forever, the name
you shall call me from generation to generation.”

When Moses asked God, "Who should I say sent me?", God replied, "I AM WHO I

AM ...Tell them I AM has sent me to you." (Exod 3:14)

Additionally, there are seven (7) covenant names of God given to His people by

which He wanted His people to know Him. One of the names God used to reveal
Himself was, "I AM the God who heals you". (Exod 15:26)

Matthew Henry's Commentary tells us about this simple, yet profound "I AM"
statement made by God;


"A name that denotes what he is in himself, I AM THAT I AM. This explains his name
Jehovah, and signifies, 1. That he is self-existent: he has his being of himself. 2. That he is
eternal and unchangeable, and always the same, yesterday, to-day, and for ever. 3. That he is
incomprehensible; we cannot by searching find him out: this name checks all bold and curious

inquiries concerning God. 4. That he is faithful and true to all his promises, unchangeable in

his word as well as in his nature; let Israel know this, I AM hath sent me unto you. I am, and
there is none else besides me." 1

Wow! Let's recap by listing God's attributes:


1. God is self-existent. He has His being of Himself.
2. God is eternal and unchangeable, and always the same yesterday, today, and
forever.
3. God is incomprehensible; we cannot by searching find Him out: this name checks
all bold and curious inquiries concerning God.
4. God is faithful and true to all His promises, unchangeable in His word and in His
nature.

As you read these healing scriptures that we've compiled for you, remember the

great I AM and the I AM promises in His Word.

He's not the I WAS. He's the I AM! He's the same: past, present and future.


These promises and scriptures are for us today and they will be applicable for all
eternity, because He is the great I AM.

Here are a few more instances that we see I AM in the Bible.


Malachi 3:6a (KJV)
"For I am the LORD, I change not..."

The Lord said of Himself, "I change not", which means that every promise and
scripture in the Word of God is still true and still applies to us today.

The "I AM" in the Personhood of Jesus
Because Jesus and the Father are one, then Jesus has the "I AM" character and
nature, as well.
(Jn 10:30, Col 1:15)

Hebrews 13:8
"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."

That scripture is clear, there's no interpretation needed. We see the "eternal and
unchangeable, and always the same yesterday and today and forever" character and
nature in Jesus.

Jesus displays this in His healing ministry. Let's look at the familiar passage of Jesus

healing a leper. This is recorded in Matthew 8:2-4, Mark 1:40-41 and Luke 5:12-14.

Matthew 8:2-3
2 " A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing,

you can make me clean.” Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am
willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy."

Did you see it? Maybe you've read that passage countless times and are just now
seeing it. In verse 3, Jesus replies, " I AM willing".

All the passages in the synoptic gospels have Jesus' reply recorded the same; "I AM
willing".

Jesus made several I AM statements about Himself. He said: I AM the light of the
world, I AM the door, I AM the way, truth and life, I AM the Good Shepherd, and
others.

I AM was the statement that knocked the soldiers back and they fell down when
they went to arrest Jesus and He answered, "I AM He." (Jn 18:1-6)

We don't have any theological issues validating the absolute truth of any of those "I
AM" statements Jesus made. Then why do we doubt the "I AM willing" statement
Jesus says about Himself concerning healing?

Let's recap:
1. God Himself says He's the I AM and He doesn't change. (Mal 3:6)
2. The Bible says Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Heb
13:8)
3. Jesus said, "I AM willing" concerning healing. (Mt 8:2-3)
4. The Bible says that ALL God's promises are yes and amen in Christ Jesus. (2 Cor
1:20)
5. The Bible says that "God is not a respecter of persons". That means He doesn't do
for one without the same willingness to do for another. (Acts 10:24 and Rom 2:11)

That means if Jesus said "I AM willing" to the healing of the leper when he asked
Jesus to heal him, then that means Jesus IS WILLING to heal you!

With this revelation of I AM, we can no longer pray, "Lord, if You are willing..." (or

the modern day version, "Lord, if it be Your will...") concerning healing. The I AM
WHO I AM said He is eternally, never changing, the same yesterday and today and
forever. He's not just willing for one person but willing for all. He's faithful and true

to all His promises, unchangeable in His word and in His nature. He is the "I AM
willing" to heal you!

"He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his

Joshua 14:10-11
“Now then, just as the LORD promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since
the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I
am today, eighty-five years old! I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me
out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then."

Judges 6:23
"But the LORD said to him, “Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.”

1 Samuel 25:6
"Say to him: ‘Long life to you! Good health to you and your household! And
good health to all that is yours!"

2 Samuel 24:25

2 Kings 20:5
"Go back and tell Hezekiah, the ruler of my people, ‘This is what the Lord, the God
of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will heal
you. On the third day from now you will go up to the temple of the Lord."

2 Chronicles 7:14
"If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and
seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I
will forgive their sin and will heal their land."

2 Chronicles 30:20
"And the Lord heard Hezekiah and healed the people."

Nehemiah 8:10
"Nehemiah said, “Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send
some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do
not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”

Job 5:26
"You will come to the grave in full vigor, like sheaves gathered in season."

Job 11:17
"Life will be brighter than noonday, and darkness will become like morning."

Job 22:21
"Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you."
