Emerald Eyes

Kyler motioned for all of us to gather around. With my mind somewhere else I only

managed to hear high tea, shopping, and an adult sleepover.

“Jenna, are you paying attention?” Kyler must have noticed me zoning out.

“Yes.” I managed for a second to come out of my daze. “I just have a few things on my

mind.”

“Man issues?” Kyler inquired.

“Ah…no, I just have some things that I have to take care of when I get home.”

Kyler gave me a strange look. As long as she has known me, she could always tell when

I was not being truthful with her. She was like a human lie detector.

“Well Jenna that is why we are here. We are letting go of our problems at home and

focusing on having fun.” Kyler’s smiled. It forced a smile on my face. Her optimism was

contagious. She always had a way of keeping a positive spin on everything. I loved that about

her. I decided to try harder to conceal my emotions. I knew that the “human lie detector” was

not going to let me off easy.

“Okay ladies let’s try to get as much shopping done as we can within our time

constraints.” Kyler was more than aware of the endless spending limits and reckless spending

habits of the group she was traveling with. There had to be a cutoff point.

“I’m driving!” Heather called as she raced to the front door.

50

“Oh honey, no need to worry. We have a driver for that.” Kyler’s southern bell charm

always managed to present itself when she was teaching the less chic how to live a fabulous life.

I didn’t know if it was mean spirited or just her natural well to do, carefree personality.

“Well I’ll be…” Heather imitated Kyler’s southern bell accent. Everyone laughed,

including Kyler. That was another thing I loved about her. She knew how to take a joke.

A lot had changed since we all graduated from Georgetown. Victoria passed the bar and

inevitably started working at her grandfather’s firm. Dallas joined the FBI and was now running

around chasing terrorists. I ended up marrying the man of everyone’s dreams, Bradford

Nathaniel Lucas, IV. Heather, on the other hand, was still living for the moment like she did in

college.

Heather Michaels was a carefree spirit. She spent most of her time seeking out the next

adventure. I nickname her “The Bucket Lister”. While most of the world worked a nine to five,

Heather went from one life altering event to the next. She was like a female version of James

Bond, spending each new adventure with a new man.

Heather’s beauty took her a long way. She was a brunette with distinctive green eyes. I

believed it was those green eyes and her model type body that paid for these trips and

adventures. I never knew how Heather paid for anything and quite frankly I was too

embarrassed to ask. Nevertheless, Heather managed just fine.

“The car is here ladies. It’s time to go.” Kyler announced. We all headed towards the

door. As we stepped into the California sun, we were all hit with another Kyler surprise.

“Ladies we can’t live a fabulous life if we don’t ride in style.

51

And boy what a ride it was. In front of us was a hot pink stretch Barbie Camaro,

equipped with strawberries and champagne.

“I love my life!” Victoria shouted.

“Nothing but the best for my ladies,” Kyler responded. Alright, hop in. Let’s make some

memories.” Kyler loved to give us direction. She must have been a drill sergeant in a previous

life. We did what we were told fell in line and jump into the stretch Camaro.

“We can’t be in a Camaro without the top down.” Dallas’s statement initiated the driver

to put the top down.

“Now we are ready. Driver.”

“Yes ma’am.”

“To Rodeo Drive.” The Drill Sergeant’s request was followed, and we were on our way.

The drive was soothing. On the radio Taylor Swift’s Love Story was playing. My mind

began to think about Lucas and if we were still writing our love story. However, now the story

had taken a turn for the worse and I hope it was not coming to an end.

There were times when Lucas and I could not keep our hands off each other. The passion

that we shared was like nothing I ever experienced before. It was amazing. To keep him

sexually satisfied I stayed in yoga and Pilates classes. It was well worth it. He loved my

flexibility.

Lucas would come home, and I would have a candlelight dinner ready dressed in nothing

but silhouettes. Dinner was never the option before sex. Afterwards, I would warm up his food.

52

Make sure he had his plate, a cold beer, and the remote, in his hands as he watched ESPN in

front of his 60 inch. I thought I was a pretty good wife.

“Jenna.” A voice of endearment interrupted my thoughts. “Are you going to stay in the

car or enjoy the day?” Kyler's tone could not conceal her concern. She could sense that I was

hiding something from her. “Whatever you are going through just let it go right now and you

and I will discuss it later.” Kyler was not going to take no for answer.

“Yes ‘Drill Sergeant’.” She made a face. Kyler did not like it when I called her that.

Nonetheless, she was right. I needed to enjoy myself and from that point forward I did.

Shopping was just what the doctor ordered. For all the emptiness I was feeling at home, I

made up for it by filling this hole with expensive purchase courtesy of Lucas’s dime. I knew it

was a temporary fix, but it worked.

On the way home, the ladies were engaged in some crazy conversations. I decided to not

involve myself. I just wanted to swallow myself up in my thoughts. Thankfully, Kyler and the

other ladies allowed me to have my space.

We pulled up to the villa a little after nine. With all of the thoughts running through my

head, I felt like I just finished running a marathon. I needed to lie down.

“Ladies before we call it a night, I want to have everyone meet me in the den.” Kyler

even had a schedule for our night routine.

“Kyler, I am exhausted. I think I am going to call it a night.”

“Not too fast Jenna. You are not going to sleep just yet. I have another surprise

planned.” The Drill Sergeant was at it again.

53

“Okay,” I said begrudgingly.

“Jenna you need to enjoy these moments. Soon enough you will be back with that

handsome husband of yours.”

As exciting as that sound, me going back home to my husband would not have been as

enjoyable as everyone may assumed. With that in mind my energy level slowly crept back up

and I began to anticipate the next gem Kyler had in store.

“You’re right.” I acquiesced.

“Well scurry along. Go put your pajamas on. All the other ladies have started getting

ready. You’re running a little bit behind.” Kyler’s southern belle accent always made me feel

like she was a scolding mother.

About an hour later all the ladies met in the den. Kyler’s set up for the pajama party was

spectacular. The den had a sunken in floor. Pillows aligned the edges making it our designated

spot for comfort. Along the circular entrance of the sunken floor were gift bags. Each individual

gift bag had one of our names embroidered on it.

“Kyler, the surprises are never ending with you. You have made this trip one for the

history books.” Victoria smiled at Kyler and stepped down into the sunken living room seating

area. “These gift bags are just the icing on the cake.”

As the other ladies entered the room, they too praised Kyler for the set up and the gift

bags. Once everyone was seated, they began looking through their gift bags.

“That’s what I am talking about.” Heather must have already reached the bottom of the

bag. “Kyler, you little devil!” She finished her enthusiastic outburst.

54

“It’s not like you needed it.” Kyler joked. “To stay with a ready…”

“Kyler!” Dallas shouted, interrupting her snarky remark to Heather. You freaky freaky

girl.”

“Dallas ssh! Don’t ruin the surprise for the other girls.”

Dallas rolled her eyes and held back her excitement. Heather and Dallas waited patiently

for the other girls. By the time everyone reached the bottom of their bags they were all hot and

bothered.

Finally, Dallas pulled out her gift. It was a pink vibrator with an anal tickler. It was

wrapped in a bow with a name tag attached. It read “Hello my name is Agent”. The name was a

playoff of Dallas’s FBI career. All the girls had similar erotic gifts with special name tags.

“Oh Agent,” Dallas teased. A terrorist has taken control of my body and has planted a

computer chip in me.” Dallas held the vibrator near her face as she whispered. “You mission is

to complete a body search and locate this advice. Agent, I recommend a cavity search just in

case. I have many hidden ASS-sets.”

All of the ladies were taken over with laughter. However, with everything going on my

mind was still preoccupied with my husband. I felt that every moment I was away from him

there was room for our relationship to drift further apart. Deep inside I was already aware that

no matter what state I traveled to nothing would change.

I had never been an insecure woman until recently. I knew how Lucas made women feel

with just an acknowledgement and this was no longer privileged to me. I was now on the

opposite end of the spectrum and it was cold and lonely.

55

Who was he acknowledging? Who did he spend his time with? I was starting to believe

that work was not the only thing he was doing. Lucas always used work as a way to avoid

coming home, leaving in the middle of the night, or even ignoring my calls during regular

business hours.

Was I overreacting? Or should I take heed to my intuition. There were just so many

questions that remained unanswered. The stress from this whole situation was beyond bearable.

“Jenna,” Kyler cut into my thoughts again. I don’t know what has been going on with

you, but I am beginning to worry?” Kyler had finally cornered me. “You have been distant all

trip. You didn’t even open your gift bag.”

Kyler was right about two things. I was being distant, and I did not realize that my gift

bag was left untouched. “I just don’t know what to do. I have tried my best in my marriage to

no resolve.”

“Is Bradford mistreating you?” Victoria overheard our conversation.

Although Victoria and Lucas were childhood friends it sometimes bothered me when Victoria

called him Bradford. It was like a secret club that I was not a part of. At this point, any

connection my husband had with another woman played on my insecurities.

“Toria, I just don’t know what happen. I have given this man all of me. We even started

talking about having children. Everything stopped once he started working on some big case.”

My voice trailed off with the hopes that Victoria would fill in some of the blanks.

“Well I know that our firm just took on a major client and Bradford is running point on

the case. But Jenna I wouldn’t worry too much.”

56

“Hey Jenna, have you considered bring another woman into the bedroom?” Heather tried

to lighten the conversation. “Sometimes you just have to add a little spice.” Everyone turned

around in shock and starred Heather down. “Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! I’m just trying to be

helpful. Its 2013 no one is realllllllly monogamous. That’s why it is our job to do whatever it

takes to make our men happy.”

“Heather you got to be kidding me.” Kyle face was filled with disgust.

“Jenna, with all due respect, maybe you need some extra arsenal in your repertoire to

keep Lucas’s attention.” As offensive as Heather's suggestion sound, I knew she thought she

was offering good advice. “Jenna do not be afraid to turn your bedroom activities into a porn

adventure.”

“Heather, you are saying that Jenna should allow her man to sleep with other women?”

As obvious as Dallas’s summation was, it put Heather's argument into perspective.

“Well yes and no.”

“By all means, please explain.” Dallas couldn’t help it. She wanted to hear Heather’s

logic behind her recommendation.

“I am not saying women in the plural. I am just suggestion to give him an option to

invite another woman, just one, into the bedroom.”

“Heather stop it with the two-bit counsel. You sound ridiculous. Jenna don’t you listen

to her. This advice is coming from a woman who spends every night with a different guy. She

has no clue what commitment truly is.”

57

“And you do!? Victoria get off your high horse! You are not married either,” Heather

snapped back.

“I don’t have to be married to know that your advice is useless.” She turned to me.

“Jenna, if you bring another woman into your bedroom you are just opening up the door to

Pandora s Box.” Victoria was adamant about her stance.

“Heather it sounds tempting but I am not really that secure in my relationship to bring

another woman in our bedroom.” With that comment, Heather seemed to be satisfied that I

would even entertain the idea.

“Jenna don’t let your insecurities get to you. As long as you are the one in control you

will be fine.” My face contorted in confusion. I thought Heather was passed it.

“Heather, just drop it. Jenna is not taking this ludicrous advice. Did you not hear her

concerns? Or are you really concern about who is going to be the next person in Lucas’s bed?”

Victoria was livid.

“Ladies, that’s enough!” This conversation is heading in the wrong direction.” Kyler

tried to regain the peace. “There should be no other women in a marriage bed. But if that is

what Jenna decides to do, who are we to be judgmental about her decision.” Kyler cut her eyes

at Heather and then at Victoria. After a few minutes the tension in the room simmered down.

“Jenna before making any drastic decisions regarding your marriage, why don’t you tell

us what is going on?” Dallas investigative side emerged.

What do you mean?” I tried to evade the question.

58

“You said that you have been feeling insecure lately and that does not seem like you.”

Dallas continued. ‘Your energy, spirits, and self-esteem has been low. You deserve better.”

Dallas revealed a lot of concerns that I didn’t realize existed.

“Well I have been going through a lot.” I hesitated. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to share the

intimate secrets of my marriage. But holding it all in wasn’t too helpful. I decided to let go.

“I’m not sure if my concerns are valid but I think Lucas is cheating on me.” And with that

statement, everybody’s jaw drop.

“Jenna! No! You are not serious.” Dallas didn’t realize the extent of the truth she

uncovered. “I-I-I am so sorry.” She stammered.

The girls all began to surround me. Their compassion brought tears to my eyes. I did not

recognize how much hurt I had bottled up. And when the first hug came, I broke down.

‘I just don’t know what to do. I tried everything. He doesn’t want me anymore.” The

tears were now uncontrollable. It finally hit me. My marriage was over.

“Jenna, it’s going to be okay.” As comforting as Victoria’s words were, the reality of my

emptiness still remained. “Jenna, he’s not cheating on you. He can’t be. Where would he find

the time?”

Victoria was trying her best to make me feel better. But how would she know. I lived

with this man. He changed. There was nothing anyone could say to make me think otherwise.

Besides, she was on the outside looking in.

‘Jenna, for your piece of mind, I can confirm that he is working late. I have left the office

on numerous times and seen him still there working. I think you are being just a little dramatic.

59

Victoria was a very good friend of mine. Yet sometimes, I felt that she was too quick to defend

Lucas and excuse his behavior. I from time to time, her loyalty to him made me a little

uncomfortable.

“Jenna,” she continued. “I just don’t want you to get all worked up and then it turns out

to be something it’s not.”

“Something it’s not!” Victoria had crossed the line. “Something, it’s not!” I could feel the rag

boiling inside of me. “Victoria! I am not making up the late-night phone calls or the calls that

hang up when I answer. There is no misunderstanding if your wife tells you on several occasions

to call her if you are running late. Or at least answer your phone when I call!

Everyone was blown away by my rant. I myself didn’t believe that I aired all of my dirty

laundry. But I couldn’t help it. I was miserable in my marriage. I was tired of hiding behind the

smoke and mirrors.

“I don’t know what else to think.” I muttered.

“There’s only one thing to do.” Victoria replied.

“Victoria, what would you suggest?” Kyler said skeptically.

“If you want to find out if he is cheating, you have to follow him, check his emails, and at

least look at his text messages. Have you done that?”

“No.”

“Well until you do you shouldn’t worry yourself with speculation.

“Follow him. I don’t know the first thing about stalking a man.”

60

“I wouldn’t call it stalking. It’s more like spying. I bet Dallas can give you some tips.”

We all looked at Dallas.

“What? Are you serious?” Dallas responded to the studious stares. She was in utter

disbelief.

“I think it’s a great idea if you ask me.” Heather answered on my behalf.

“No one asked you. But I think it is a lot better than bringing another woman into your

bedroom.” Kyler’s rebuttal left a smirk on her face as well as Heather’s.

“It was only a suggestion.” Heather shot back. She turned to me. “Clearly you need to

do something Jenna.

“Dallas what should I do?”

“Jenna it’s a little more to it than Victoria makes it seem.”

“What do you mean?”

“Dallas just tell her the basics? Or at least do it for her.” Victoria blatantly asked.

“Jenna you really want to do this? Dallas seemed to be annoyed by Victoria’s

persistence.

“It seems like I have no choice. I want to know what I am dealing with.” Victoria's

request was outrageous, but it was an interesting idea.

“I’ll do it.” Everyone looked at Dallas.

61

“Dallas are you sure? I wouldn’t want you to put your career in jeopardy over my

insecurities. I mean it is a little over the top.” I started to second guest Victoria’s suggestion.

Did I really want to know if Lucas was cheating on me?

“Jenna I am sure. You need to know. I can’t continue to see you like this. I am willing

to do it for you. And besides it may be nothing.”

“Well there that settles it. Ladies this has been an interesting turn of events, but I think it

is time for me to call it a night. Kyler stretched her arms out and started to gather her things. It

was amazing how she could walk away from such a hot topic. “Jenna, whatever you decided just

know that I am behind you one hundred percent. Don’t let the peer pressure of these ladies lead

you in the wrong direction.” Kyler got up and walked towards her room. She turned around.

“One more thing, don’t listen to anything Heather has to say.” We all laughed.

“I’m glad she is gone, Ms. Holier Than Thou.”

“Heather, I heard that.” We all laughed again it was a much-needed intermission.

“Jenna.” Victoria ended the intermission. “This spying thing may take up a little too

much of Dallas’s time. If you need someone to help you, this is something you and I could do. I

mean I do work with him. I really don’t think Dallas should put herself in a position that might

affect her job.

“Victoria, it has already been decided. I have the time to do it and this will end all the

questions Jenna has in regard to his infidelity.” Dallas answered for me.

“Dallas you really believe all this is necessary?”

62

“It is not about whether or not it is necessary. It is about putting these ideas in Jenna’s

head to rest.”

“Jenna, Bradford is a good guy you should have nothing to worry about. Besides have

you talked to him about this?”

“Yes and no. But if she finds something, I am blaming this on you.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Well you are the one who introduced me to your Bradford Nathaniel Lucas, IV.”

“So you are going to hold me to that.”

“Yes I am.”

“Okay, I will take that one. If this does not turn out positive, I want to apologize in

advance.”

“Your apology is not accepted.” I said jokingly.

“Cut the love fest. Are you two finished?” Before Victoria or I could answer Dallas

continued.

“Jenna you just need to give me a few details and I will go from there.”

“What do you need?”

“Just like his phone number, work address, email addresses things like that.”

‘You’re going to tap his phone?”

63

“Jenna, the less you know the better. Just in case this goes south you will need plausible

deniability.”

“Oh, okay.”

“Remember, there is always a chance for nothing to turn up. If I do find something, I

will let you know. As a side note, I will only give you the information. Whatever you decide to

do with it is your business.”

“How long will it take for you to know something?

“That just depends on him. But I will give it a reasonable amount of time before I

conclude that there is nothing happening. So, don’t worry.”

Inside I had all these mixed emotions. I did not know how to feel. What I was left with

was anxiety. What if Dallas found something? How would I handle it? What if he didn’t find

anything? Had my marriage been reduced to a non-sexual jaded relationship? I didn’t know

what to think.

“Move it sweetie.”

“Excuse me?”

“I said move it!”

“I am not going anywhere.” I was not sure where the courage came from, but I felt like I

had to stand my ground. I was tired of people running over me, Lucas, the law system, DaVita

and now this. “I’m not sure what your problem is but you are going to need to find somewhere

64

else to sit. I am not moving!” I looked directly into the girl’s eyes and gave her my most vicious

look.

“Listen up blondie. Move now or I will make you move.” She did not back down.

I guess my stare down didn’t work. I folded. I was not going to get into a fist fight over seating

arrangements. I definitely did not want to engage into a fight that I would probably not win. I

started to put my things back on my tray.

“Sit down!”

“Excuse me? I thought you wanted me to…” Before I could finish, I looked up and seen

DaVita.

“Sit down Jenna. You do not have to go anywhere. Kendra you need to leave this girl

alone.”

“DaVita, what’s your problem? You know this is my table. She got to go.”

“Kendra maybe you didn’t hear me. So, I am going to say it one more time. Leave her

alone.”

DaVita engaged in her own stare down. This time Kendra backed down. I was so

grateful to DaVita. But then I began to wonder why she stood up for me.

“DaVita,” I shouted. She was already in the process of walking away. “DaVita,” I

repeated. She turned around with the same angry look she had earlier. “Thank you.” DaVita

gave me a smirk of a smile and walked away. I began to rethink our friendship and it non-

existent.

Chapter Four

“the balancing act”

“Ooh, I do not like prisons.” The words escaped my lips as soon as I exited the prison’s

gates. Before any other thoughts could cross my mind, my phone rang. I fumbled around in

search of my cell in my Dooney bag.

By the time I found the phone I missed the call. I looked at it and saw that the miss call

was from Dallas. I’ll call her when I get in the car. I thought to myself.

I continued to look in my purse. This time I was looking for my keys. I really need to

empty this thing. It’s like looking for a needle in a haystack. It shouldn’t take this long to find

anything. Ten minutes later, I found the keys to My Toria.

67

My Toria was my 2013 drop top white Beamer. She was recently purchased with

settlement money earned from winning a client’s case against a major corporation. My Toria

was custom made to suit all my needs. She reminded me of myself, sleek elegant, and top of the

line. Her interior was tan leather with wood grain accent. As I reached the car, I took a step

back to admire her beauty.

As I stood there, I realized what a beautiful day it was. The sun was shining brightly, and

the sky was cloud free. Other than the dreary prison behind me, my surroundings brought a

sense of peace.

“I need to appreciate the important things in life.” I said out loud. I sometimes struggled

with valuing materialistic pleasures. While I am out here enjoying the sun and all its glory,

Jenna is surrounded by a pack of wild wolves. And to make it worse, they were all females.

I tucked the thoughts of Jenna current situation in the back of my mind. Even though

Jenna was my friend, I couldn’t get emotional about what she was going through. It was my job

as her attorney to think clearly.

I opened the door to My Toria. Once I put the keys in the ignition, I remembered to call

Dallas back. I picked up my iPhone and dialed her number. The phone rang three times before

she answered. When I heard her voice, I turned down the radio. Maroon 5 was playing in the

background.

“Hey Dallas, you called?”

“Yeah, I was just checking in with you. Are you on your way to court?”

“Yes. I have to be there this afternoon around one o’clock.”

68

“Do you need me to come?”

“No, you don’t have to come. I am just going down there to hear the appeal decision.”

“You are sure you don’t need me to come?"

“No, you already have done enough. That information you uncovered was definitely

helpful.”

“Oh okay, well if you need me or want me to come down to support you let me know.”

“I most definitely will.” As I was about to say my goodbyes Dallas stopped me in mid-

breath.

“Oh, by the way, I know you went to see Jenna today. How was she?"

“She’s hanging in there. She is a little pale but other than that she was fine.” I did not

want to mention to Dallas how fragile she looked or how needy she seemed to be. Dallas had a

tendency of being overprotective when it came to Jenna.

“Well, I expected her to be pale. The girl is used to getting a tan at least twice a month. I

am surprise she wasn’t freaking out about that.” Dallas paused. “What did you guys talk about?”

“The visit was pretty short, so we didn’t talk about much. But she did mention

Bradford."

“What did she say about him?”

“She wanted to know if I have spoken to him.”

“Well, have you?”

69

“Yeah, I have but I did not tell her that.”

“Why didn’t you tell her?”

“Because it was more so work related. Besides, I did not have the heart to tell her that I

spoke to him. What woman do you know wants to hear that another woman talked to their

husband? Especially, when the conversation did not relate to her.”

“Yeah, I would agree.”

Dallas’s response lifted a weight off my shoulders. I did not like to hide the truth from

Jenna, but she was in such a vulnerable state. I could not add to her worry.

“Dallas, personally I still think she is trying to deal with Bradford’s infidelity. I don’t

believe she has accepted it."

“Yeah, I completely agree with you. I went to see her last month and she seemed to still

be in disbelief. But if the dead body lying in front of her feet did not slap her back into reality

there is nothing that we can do. Part of her disbelief had to do with Jenna finding out that Lucas

cheated on her. Not to mention, months later she was convicted of his mistress death. The girl

has been broken. She probably can't even wrap her head around everything that is happening.”

“Yeah you could be right.” I changed the subject. I did not feel comfortable talking

about Bradford’s alleged mistress. “So, when are you going back to see her?”

“I plan to see her before the week is out. Kyler said she would come with me.”

“Do you know if Heather plans to visit her?" I asked.

70

“I’m not really sure. She has been spending so much time with that guy she met at

Kyler’s party. I really haven’t had a chance to talk to her. I am not even sure if she ever visited

Jenna in prison.”

“That’s weird. There was a point where Heather and Jenna couldn’t be separated.”

“I know. That’s why it is so strange. Jenna can use all the support she can get, and

Heather should at least make the time, boyfriend or no boyfriend. I’ll give Heather a call later to

see what her story is.”

Before I could respond to Dallas my other line clicked. "Hold on Dallas. I have another

call.”

“Go head and take the call Victoria. I will catch up with you later.”

“Okay I’ll talk to you later sweetie.”

“Bye.”

After we said our goodbyes followed by a few terms of endearment, I accepted the call

on the other line. The incoming call was from an unknown number.

“Hello?”

Usually I did not answer unknown phone numbers, however, this particular phone

number looked like it was coming from one of my office extensions.

“Hello Victoria.”

As soon as I heard the voice, I recognized it immediately.

71

“Hello Bradford. What’s going on?

“Victoria, I was just calling you to see if you were coming back to the office.”

“I didn’t plan to. You know I have you wife’s appeal today at one o’clock.”

“Oh yea, I forgot about that.”

“You forgot. Bradford! You are her husband. Don’t you think that you should at least

try to make some effort to attend the hearing?”

“I am not sure if I want to deal with that. I mean she was convicted of murder. I don’t

think it would be beneficial for me to go. You know I am trying to repair my image. Anything

that associates me with her will absolutely gain some traction in the media and will tarnish my

efforts to rebuild the firm’s name. Our grandfathers' name.”

“Well could you at least go see her?’

“I will. As soon as things die down a little, I will go.”

“When I was there today, she asked about you.”

“She did. What did she say?”

“She wanted to know if I spoke to you.”

“What did you say?”

“I told her I didn’t, and I feel guilty about.”

“Toria, I will go see her. I don’t want you to take this on by yourself.”

72

“Bradford, that’s good. Please plan to do it sooner than later. You are breaking her

heart. You need to tell her something.”

“Aw, look at Toria caring for someone else’s feelings.’

“Bradford, I do have a heart. Plus, I need for her to be in the best of spirits. We have a

case to win.”

"Good luck with that. You have a mountain to climb.” He said sarcastically.

“I am not worried. I am the best at what I do. That is why I didn’t bother asking for your

assistance.”

“Is that right?”

“That’s correct. I will have your wife home to you in no time. That’s only if she wants

an adulterer back.”

“Victoria, you know that was a hit below the belt.” Bradford was left speechless. His

tone immediately changed. “Alright Victoria, I’ll talk to you later."

“Fine bye,” I snapped back jokingly.

I hung up the phone. Bradford hated when I mentioned his infidelity. He knew I was

angered by his actions. He did not consider anyone when he decided to step out on Jenna. I was

just getting over it myself.

Before going to court I scheduled brunch with Kyler and Heather. We decided to meet

up at the International House of Pancakes. As I pulled up into the parking lot, I saw Kyler's car

already parked. Her promptness was nerve-wreaking. There was rarely an occasion for me to be

73

late. Yet, she always had a way of making you feel ashamed that you did not arrive at the exact

time that she did.

As I exited My Toria, I looked at my watch. It was a quarter after ten. Maybe Kyler

would not give me such a hard time today. I’m fifteen minutes early. I thought to myself.

I walked into the restaurant and informed the host that my party was already seated. I

scanned the room and located Kyler. She had her Sunday's best on. She was wearing an

extravagant pink hat wrapped in lace and jewels. Kyler’s hat laid perfectly on top of her sheered

cut dark Victoria Beckham styled hair.

Her assemble only compliment her hat. She wore a soft pink silk shirt with ruffles that

started at the collar and lined all the buttons down her shirt. The soft pink tones in her blouses

accented her complexion as well as reflected off her honey colored eyes. Her outfit was topped

off by a black pencil skirt accompanied by a pair of pink six-inch heels.

I noticed Kyler looking at her watch. I guess my plan to be earlier than early failed. I

braced myself for her irrational complaints about my tardiness.

“Don’t worry Ms. Georgia Peach. I am here.” Kyler greeted me with a smile.

“You’re earlier than I expected.”

“Yeah, I know. I was trying to catch you off guard. What time did you get here?"

“I got here just around ten thirty.”

“Why so early?”

74

“I needed a little extra time to make the final seating chart for a tea party I am hosting

this afternoon.”

“Oh, so that is why you are dressed so dapper today.”

“I wasn’t going to have enough time to go home and change after our brunch. Not only

that, this look is a conversational piece.”

Kyler was right about that. As I looked around the room, I could see the attention this

“conversational piece” was receiving.

“So, have you heard from Heather? She must be pulling up soon. It’s almost eleven.”

Kyler gave me a besmirched look.

“Victoria, now you know you friend better than that. She is never on time.” As soon as

Kyler uttered those words her phone rang. “Victoria, pardon me while I take this. It is Heather.”

“Perfect timing, she must have known we were talking about her.”

“I know right.”

Kyler’s manners were beyond me. You could tell that she was brainwashed in charm

school. She had the ability to politely scold you without raising her voice. Yet instill, by the

time the conversation was over you were set straight. Heather did not know what was in store

for her.

“Hello? ...How are you? …That’s good. …Waiting on you. …Oh really?! …Well

Heather I wished you would have called me earlier.”

I looked at Kyler. Her face was twisted in disgust.

75

“I just think it’s a little inconsiderate of you to cancel at the last minute.”

From what I could make out of Kyler’s one-sided conversation, Heather was not coming

to brunch.

“No… You fail to realize that this is the second time you have cancelled. Victoria and I

rearranged our schedules so we could all meet. …That’s not fair Heather. …That’s not going to

happen. …Well that’s inappropriate. …Heather here is some advice, be a lady, lower your tone

when you speak to me, and watch your language.”

“Kyler, Kyler,” I tried to get her attention. I wasn’t sure where this conversation was

going but she was not happy with Heather. She signaled with her finger to give her one minute.

“I just believe you are putting him before our friendship.” She continued.

“Kyler, don’t let her ruin our brunch. Just hang up.” I tried again.

This time she mouth the words I know.

“Heather, this conversation is pointless. I am truly done with your excuses. I am

hanging up now to attend to my present company.” Kyler hung up the phone.

“Ugh! Heather makes me so upset.”

“Kyler don’t let her stress you out. You know that girl is flighty.”

“I understand that. My problem is that she didn’t get it. Heather’s just so rude and as

much as I done for her... You would think she could at least show up for brunch.”

Kyler was more hurt than mad. She had always made an effort to support all the girls.

76

“Why did she cancel?”

“She really didn’t say. But I think it had something to do with that new guy she’s

dating.”

“What knew guy?” I asked.

“You know the one that she met at the Adult Play Date party.”

“Oh yeah, wasn’t his name Ryan?”

“I think so.”

“She has been with that one guy since the party?” I asked.

Just saying it out loud made it even more unbelievable. Heather had a reputation for

being a “fun girl”.

“Yeah, it is going on four weeks now.”

“Wow, it must be serious. I'm shocked. Heather having a man for more than a week is

amazing." I joked.

“I hope it’s worth losing a friendship.”

Kyler’s comment left me speechless. I wondered if Heather knew the extent of damage

she caused to her relationship with Kyler. She only met this man four weeks ago. I remember

her introducing Ryan to the group. His first impression left everyone feeling like he was a little

standoffish.

77

Every year Kyler hosted an event called the Adult Play Date. This party allowed for well

off men and women to come together and play child-like games with a sexual twist. We played

Spin the Bottle, Twister, Go Fish, and other games from childhood. It was amazing to see

Fortune 500 business executives, top ranking attorneys, high level government officials and other

prominent figure heads engage in these games.

Dallas, Heather, and I all were in attendance. It was the event of the year. During the

party, I saw Heather talking to a nice-looking gentleman. As usual she was falling all over him.

He was tall with an athletic build. He could have possibly been in the NBA. With this group of

people I would not have been surprised if he was a former player.

“How many drinks has Heather had?” I asked the other girls.

I pointed in her directions. The other ladies also noticed her bizarre behavior. Heather

had this uncanny ability to smell money. And this guy just fell into her web. As usual, she was

falling all over him. He was unable to escape. Once they began to walk towards us I knew she

had him entangled.

“Hello ladies. I would like to introduce you to Ryan.”

“Hello.” We all managed to say in unison. Ryan nodded his head in acknowledgment of

our existence. Yet, he remained speechless.

“Wow, that was pretty rude,” Kyler blurted out. "Ladies I have other guests to attend to.”

Kyler dramatically turned around and exited the conversation.

“Can you believe her?’ Heather quickly responded. “The nerve, that was extremely

rude.”

78

“Heather whatever you are drinking please order me one.” I laughed sarcastically.

“Excuse me?” Heather was confused by my sarcasm.

“So Ryan what do you do?” Dallas tried to change the conversation. She wanted to

remove the tension from the situation.

“I am a former pro basketball player turned businessman.” Ryan’s tone was short and

full of arrogance.

“What type of businesses do you have?” Dallas’s interrogation continued.

“I rather not discuss business in this setting.”

Ryan seemed to be a little annoyed by Dallas’s questions.

“I was just making conversation.”

Now Dallas was turned off by Ryan’s personality. She left, leaving me alone with

Heather and her newfound friend.

As I stood there I realized that Ryan looked very familiar. However, I could not place

where I knew him from. I wanted to ask him a few questions, but I did not want to get shot

down like the other ladies were.

I decided to let it go for now. Anyways, I had another bone to pick with Heather.

“Drink much?”

Heather shot me an evil look.

“Now, what’s your problem?” Heather snarled.

79

“I was going to ask you the same thing.” I quickly snapped back.

“I just think you guys are being so rude.” Heather answered. “It’s just too soon to ask

such personal questions.”

“Why are you acting surprised? You know how Dallas is. I mean she’s a FBI agent and

you are known for being a man hopper. She probably is trying to gather as much information as

possible just in case. You know for your protection.”

Once I completed my sentence, I realized how horrible it sounded.

“What?!” Heather was embarrassed. “Tell me how you really feel.”

Oops. I thought to myself. I forgot he was standing there. I hope he didn’t hear me.

“Heather, I’m sorry.” I tried to apologize.

“Uncensored.” Heather said angrily. “You and your friends never know when to shut

the fuck up!” It was obvious that she didn’t accept my apology.

I let her continue with her rant. Usually when someone used that language and tone with

me, I would put them in their place. I decided to let her slide. I mean, I just called her a slut in

front of her new boy toy.

“Heather, I said I was sorry. Don’t you think you are overreacting just a little bit?”

I tried to diffuse the situation. The last thing I needed was a brawl at Kyler’s party. If the

police were called here the media would have a field day. The headlines would read, Top

Ranking Attorney Caught Fighting at a Sex Club. Of course part of the story would be over

exaggerated.

80

“No, I am not! I just tired of the judgmental bullshit. Come on Ryan lets go.”

Heather grabbed Ryan by the hand and pulled him away. From his reaction, I wasn’t

even sure if Ryan was aware of our squabble. He was just happy that he was leaving from the

circle of hostility.

“Yeah, that was a little over the top. Let me restate that. She was over the top.” I turned

and walked over to Dallas.

“So Victoria, how did that go? I was all the way over here and I heard you call her easy.”

Dallas giggled.

“It’s hard for me not to tell the truth.” I laughed.

“Victoria, you are so vicious.”

“I don’t mean to be.”

This time we both laughed. It was much needed. Heather’s energy put me in a sour

mood. I was ready to leave. I needed to be around someone who could revitalize my spirits. Or

at least I could be around someone who could physically lift me. It was time for me to make my

exit.

“I’m ready to go. All this negativity has tired me.”

I gave Dallas a hug.

“Aw Victoria, I hate to see you leave so soon.” Dallas embraced my hug. “I should

probably go too. It’s not like I looking to hook up. You were my date.”

81

“No, you should stay.”

“I might just do that. I have no one looking for me to be home soon. I told myself no

more excuses to be alone. Above all else I don’t have to work late. So, I better take advantage

of this rare moment.”

“Well don’t disappoint that man.”

“If I find him, you know I won’t.”

I left Dallas to look for the Kyler to say my goodbyes. Once we parted ways, I began to

look for the exit. Before I left, I saw Ryan standing alone at the bar. I tried to ignore him. I

really didn’t want to approach him. But he stopped me. Since Heather was nowhere in sight, I

decided to talk to him before I left. I wanted to make it really quick so I could begin my

revitalization.

After a quick conversation I finally left the building. I’m so glad that is over, now I can

handle my sexual appetite. Sometimes when I would get hot and bother my mind takes a turn

down Provocative Lane. I could not hold back any longer. I was hot and ready. I pick up the

phone to make a call.

“Hello?” He answered on the first ring.

“Hi Sweetie, are able to talk?”

“Yeah, go ahead.”

“Are you available to meet?” I inquired. Hoping to hear the word yes, I held my breath.

“Yes, I am. I can meet you in about twenty minutes.”

82

My heart began to flutter.

“Are you coming to my house?”

“That is the plan.”

“Alright, I will see you in a few. Oh, if you get there before I do just let yourself in:

“Not a problem.”

I made my way through the crowd and out of the club. It was a beautiful night outside.

The sky was illuminated by the beauty of the stars. The night air was refreshing. A cool breeze

flowed gently through my hair causing me to adjust my overcoat. The peace of the night was

exactly what I need to start my revitalization.

I signaled for the valet. Following a short wait, the attendant approached me and I

provide him with my keys. When he brought My Toria back I inspected it for damages. She

was returned to me scratch free and I tipped the valet handsomely.

The minute I hopped in my car my body was overtaken by excitement. The anticipation

of my late-night adventure was overwhelmingly stimulating. As I drove, I imagine his hands all

over me exploring my body’s delicate places.

The drive was a blur. I barely remembered it. Wow, I don’t even know how I made here.

It was amazing that my mind managed to wonder off to Sexville while I was in autopilot. I

turned down street hoping that he was not there just yet. I wanted to light some candles, turn on

some soft music, and fix my face. To my dismay, he was already there. I was thrilled and

disappointed at the same time. However, the disappointment faded quickly.

83

My heart commenced to beating fast as the adrenaline took over my body. I took a deep

breath put the key in the lock, turn the key, and open the door. To my surprise, he had candles

lit, to flutes of wine poured, and soft music playing in the background.

“I see you made yourself at home…” I stop talking just to take a moment to admire his

efforts.

He did not response to my comment. He answered by meeting me at the door and

planting the most sensual kiss on my lips. His soft lips were welcomed and not before long those

soft kisses turned aggressive. His lips traveled down my neck to the opening of my blouse.

Amazingly, with one hand he managed to pop the blouse open revealing my pink lace bra.

He kissed me around my neckline as his hand explored all areas leading to my breasts.

Reaching his destination, his hand firmly cupped my breast. His lips were next to follow. With

his tongue, he began to firmly caress and suck on them which only escalated my need for him.

He had awakened the dirty little girl inside of me. He didn’t stop there. With one hand he lifted

up my skirt and quickly found out that I was not wearing any panties.

“Toria, I guess you were ready for me.”

I barely have the strength to answer him. Before I could regain my composure, his hands

went from my inner thighs up to the softest spot on my body. Within instants, his hands were met

with a warm wet welcoming.

“Yea, you’re ready.” He repeated.

With every touch, my body pulsated. It felt as if his every move awakened another part

of me that my sexual pleasure was not aware of. My mind was spinning. I have not felt such

84

pleasure in years. I jumped at his every touch. His lips continued to travel from my breast, to

my navel, and to its final destination. My pleasure limits were maxed out.

“Hold on Toria. I want you to feel me inside you first.”

But I dint know if I could wait any longer. He lifted me up and placed himself inside of

me. The minute he entered me I was unable to hold back. The wait was over. My body

exploded.

“That’s my girl.”

He thrust himself inside of me going deeper and deeper with each stroke. I was totally

lost in my gratification. It took all I could to muster up the energy to grind against him hoping

for one more pleasure filled moment.

He carried me over to the couch. He was still inside of me when he sat down. I grab his

knees and continued to rotate my hips in search of my quest. This was followed by his thrusting

stroke. He pushed my back forward. I managed to place my hands on the floor prepared for his

next move. He stood up, adjusted himself, and grabbed my inner thighs. I adjusted my stance

placing my hands on the coffee table.

He removed on hand from my hip and grabbed my hair. This stimulated every sensation

in my body. Once he could feel that I was ready, he grabbed both of my hips and thrust himself

inside of me again and again. I tried to keep up with his rhythm, but he was too much in control.

All I could do was relaxed and enjoyed the moment.

85

“Victoria, I am truly sorry, but I am going to have to cut our brunch short.” Kyler

interrupted my erotic daydream. “I just received a call from one of my vendors and he is having

some trouble with the venue.”

“That’s fine. I need to prepare for court.”

In the mist of my drift I didn’t even realize that Kyler was on the phone. It was amazing

to me how that man was good at making me think only about him.

“Victoria, we can just reschedule our brunch for a later date. Maybe this time all parties

can at least show up or stay for the whole event.” Kyler chuckled to herself as she stood up. She

walked over to my side of the table to hug and kiss me on both cheeks. She placed a tip on the

table and exited the restaurant.

“Hi ma’am may I take your order?” The waiter waited for a response.

I really needed a drink. I thought to myself. I looked at my watch and seen that I was cutting it

short on time.

“I’ll just take a coffee to go.” The waiter nodded and went to prepare the coffee.

The drive to the courthouse was quicker than expected. All while driving my total focus

was on the case. After parking My Toria in its designated area, I made my way through the

courthouse metal detectors. As I walked in, I seen the usual courthouse suspects. It was a

mixture of attorneys and reoccurring offenders.

Out of the corner of my eye I thought I seen a familiar face. When I turned around, I

realized that it was Ryan. I was not quite sure why he was in the courthouse. This did not sit too

well with me.

86

Ryan caught my glance and acknowledged my presence. He truly was a nice-looking

man. He was wearing a charcoal suit with a black shirt complimented by a black and gray tie.

The suit fit his frame so well that you could tell that his clothes were tailored made and not

picked off the rack of a last season department store. He headed towards me. This came as a

surprise. I tried to avoid him by going in the opposite direction.

“Hey Victoria wait.” I heard him call out.

I couldn’t lose him. So, I turned around hoping to end the conversation as soon as

possible. He caught up to me.

“Did you hear me calling you?” His tone was a little aggressive.

“Yes, that’s why I turned around.” I was aggravated by his question. “What is it?”

“Aren’t you a lawyer or something?” He asked.

“Yes, I am an attorney.” I sort of hesitated in my answer. I did not like to be called a

lawyer it was beneath me.

“I’m kind of in a bind. My lawyer and I are bumping heads. So, I had to let him go. I

have a hearing coming up in like a few hours. I wanted to know if you could handle my case.”

Ryan’s question came as a shock.

“That’s a loaded question.”

“What do you mean?”

‘First, it may not be a good idea to represent you due to the fact that you are dating

Heather. And second, I don’t have time to prepare for the case.”

87

“Well can’t you postpone it or something?”

“That is an option. However, it still does not address the first issue.” I looked at my

watch it was almost time for Jenna’s appeal.

“Victoria you know you owe me.” Ryan’s face changed from pleasant to more serious.

“I owe you?” Ryan never ceased to amaze me with his arrogance. “You’re pushing it.”

My voice lowered but the tone made up for the volume. Ryan didn’t respond. But his silence

spoke for him. “Fine I’ll do it.”

“You’ll handle my case?”

“Yes, I’ll do it. I just have this case to take care of first.”

“Okay.”

I headed towards the law clerk desk. Ryan followed. “Hi, can you tell me the courtroom

number for the Lucas case?”

The clerk searched through a black case folder. “It is in courtroom 417 on the fourth

floor.”

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

Ryan and I headed towards the elevators. He pushed the up button. After a two-minute

wait, Ryan and I walked inside the elevator.

“What are you thinking?!” I yelled at Ryan. “You can’t do this!”

88

“Do what?” Ryan’s face was twisted in confusion.

“You know what I’m talking about. A lot of people know me here. I really do not want

anyone to see us together.”

“Well, you decided to take me on as your client now.”

“I had no choice. You forced my hand.”

“Then I guess I solved our little dilemma.”

“That’s not the point.” I snarled.

“Victoria, then what’s the point?” He shot back.

‘The point… the point is that we are not to be seen together. People talk. How are you

going to explain this to Heather?” Before he could respond the elevator opened up. “Ryan we

will have to discuss this later.” I stormed out. I almost bumped into the people waiting to enter.

I ignored the inevitable snarky remarks.

I entered the courtroom. I was shocked see Dallas and Heather sitting on the first row in

the courtroom behind the defendant’s table. I told them not to come. The sight of those two

angered me. I turned around hoping that Heather did not see Ryan behind me. He better make

himself invisible. The last thing I need is a problem with Heather. Ryan was not there. Good.

One of the things I hated most was to work with clients that I know personally. The other

thing was to have friends in the courtroom while I was working. Unfortunately, I have the

pleasure of managing both today. But I guess that’s what happens when you step across your

own boundaries.

89

“Hey what are you guys doing here?” I had to ask.

“Hello Victoria. I know you said not to bother coming but Heather and I decided to come

and support Jenna.” Dallas answered.

“Oh, why didn’t you say you were coming?”

“Jenna called me and told me that she wanted me to be there for her.” Dallas seemed to

be annoyed by me giving her the third degree.

“Is there a problem or something?” Heather interrupted.

“No Heather, there’s not a problem.”

Heather always tried to amplify things.

“So Victoria, why are you asking all these questions?” She continued.

“This is going to be an emotional situation. I am just worried about your response if the

judge does not rule in Jenna’s favor.”

‘Victoria, I think we can handle ourselves.” Dallas didn’t seem to be buying what I was

selling.

“Let me explain.”

“Please do.” Heather responded annoyingly.

“My main concern is for my client. If the outcome is not in our favor it is my job to keep

her in good spirits. Any emotional outburst only adds to the problem.

90

“Victoria, we promise not to be “problematic”. Dallas emphasis problematic with air

quotes.

“Dallas was that necessary.” Sometimes she had the tendency to get under my skin.

However, my statement was sterner this it was meant to be.

“Victoria, do your job! We can handle ourselves.” Dallas turned to Heather and they

started their own conversation.

“Oh, okay.” I stood there baffled. Dallas rude behavior was shocking. I took a deep

breath and walked away. I needed to focus my attention back on Jenna. While walking to the

dependent’s table, the bailiff brought out Jenna.

Although Jenna was in prison for a little over a year, she looked like she had done five

years hard time. The bailiff instructed Jenna to sit down. He uncuffed her. I sat down next to

her.

“So are you ready?” This was a big moment for Jenna as well as me.

“Yea, I have been praying and everything.”

“I didn’t know you were religious.” In fact, I thought Jenna was the exact opposite.

“No, I’m not. But at this point, I will try anything if it works.”

“Okay, well before the judge comes in, I want to go over how this is going to work. You

remember the paperwork I submitted to the court a few months ago?

“Yes.”

91

“A set of judges will review the case to make sure that the letter of the law was followed.

Today we are going to hear whether or not the court decision will be overturned.”

“Does that mean I could be released from prison?”

“That’s correct.”

“I can get out of here today?” Jenna’s eyes were filled with hope. It was like life was

breathed back into her body. If the opposite ruling is handed down it will only add to the

devastation.

“If the ruling is in our favor it would probably take a couple of days to process your

paperwork.”

“How long would you estimate?”

“No longer than a week.”

“I don’t think that I can handle another day.”

“Jenna, I wouldn’t worry. You can handle a few more days.”

“Victoria, you spend one day in here and tell me a couple of days is nothing.”

Jenna had a scowl on her face. She ran her hands through her hair. I come to learn that

was a habit of hers whenever she became angry, frustrated, or irritated. At this time, I didn’t

need an unstable client. I had to settle her down.

“Jenna, I didn’t mean to come off or sound insensitive. I just want you to be prepared for

the worse.” Hopefully, that did the trick.

92

“I know. This is all so new to me.” Jenna kind of settled down. The both of us were

now patiently waiting for the judge to enter the courtroom.

“All rise the Honorable Judge Gregory Harper is presiding.” Everyone in the courtroom

stood up in.

The judge walked into the courtroom and took his seat.

“You may be seated,” Judge Harper instructed. “Good afternoon.” Judge Harper

continued.

He was usually friendly. Most judges who sat on the bench were more formal. He

looked towards his clerk. “Ms. Anderson, what’s our first case?”

“Case number 678345L Lucas verse the People of Washington D.C.”

Chapter Five

“it’s just a proposition”

“I can’t believe Jenna is going through this.” I whispered to Dallas

“She’s been going through this for almost two years now.” Dallas replied.

“I know but Jenna could not hurt a fly. She doesn’t deserve this.”

“Well, hopefully today will put an end to it all.”

“I hope so.”

Jenna being on trial did not sit well with me. There had to be an explanation for what happen.

But from the first trial it appeared to be an open and close case. She had the gun, blood was all

95

over the house, and the body was lying in front of her when the police arrived. I was not an

expert, but the evidence did point to her guilt.

A part of me felt a little guilty. I had many sleepless nights thinking that I had played a

part in the steps leading up to Jenna’s arrest. The guilt ate at me so much that I did not even go

visit Jenna in prison. I just didn’t know how she was going to react to seeing me.

Jenna and I haven’t spoken to each other since we found out about her husband’s

mistress. The tears began to swell, and I started sobbing softly. This grabbed Dallas’s attention.

“Heather, what’s wrong?” Dallas asked. She scooted closer to me to provide an

environment of comfort.

“Dallas, I-I-I feel, so guilty.” I finally stammered out.

“Why?” Dallas was confused. She was unsure to what I was going to say next.

“I really can’t talk about it.” Jenna made me swear that I would not share this

information with the other girls.

“What promise?” Dallas was not taking my answer very well.

“I can’t really discuss it?”

“Is it something that could hurt or help her case?” Now Dallas was at full attention.

“I’m not sure.” The tones of our voices were beginning to become noticeable.

“Heather lets go.”

96

Dallas’s comforting embrace turned into a forceful arm grab. As she pressured me to

move, I stumbled out of my seat and into the courtroom isle. We managed to exit without

making any more noise. In the background I was able to hear the judge go over the legalities of

the case.

“Heather you need to tell me what’s going on.”

“Dallas, are you speaking to me as a friend or as law enforcement?” Dallas was making

me nervous.

“Seriously Heather… I am speaking to you as a friend.” Dallas appeared to be offended.

“I don’t understand why you would think otherwise.”

“You’re making me feel like I need a lawyer.” I tread carefully.

“Heather do you think you need a lawyer?”

“I don’t think so. I just feel like I have some responsibility for Jenna’s situation.”

“What do you mean? Did you kill the girl?”

“No!”

“Did you help plot out her death?”

“No!”

“So why are you harboring this guilty?” Dallas’s line of questioning was surrounded by

sarcasm, but she still was a little frustrated.

97

“Because… Jenna and I knew the dead girl!” I couldn’t help myself. The words slipped

right out of my mouth.

“What!” Dallas was stunned. “Come over here Heather. I don’t want anyone to hear

you.” Dallas led me to a more isolated area. I reluctantly followed. “What happened?”

“Dallas, I promised her!”

“Heather the case is over. She is already in jail. You can spit out now.” Dallas words

were convincing.

“I guess it doesn’t matter now.” I paused. I wanted to share this information for a long

time. But I didn’t know how it would have affected the other girls or Jenna’s case. “Remember

when we went to Beverly Hills?

“Yea,” Dallas answered.

“She took me up on my offer.” I was hoping Dallas would pick up on what I was saying

without me actually saying it.

“What do you mean she took you up on your offer?”

“When we got back to D.C she pulled me to the side. She wanted to know more

information regarding having a threesome.”

“She wanted to know what?!” Dallas was blown away.

“She was interested in having a threesome.”

98

“I can’t believe what I am hearing. You’re actually saying that Jenna was considering

allowing another woman to sleep with Lucas?”

“Yes. Honestly, I offered to be the third person.”

“You did what? What did she say?”

“She said no. But she wanted me to help her.”

“What happen?” Dallas was beyond intrigued.

“Let me tell you the story.”

The plane landed at Regan National Airport around two-thirty in the afternoon. As so as

we were off the plane Jenna approached me.

“Hey Heather wait up. I want to talk to you for a second.” Jenna sound a little anxious.

‘Hey Jenna, what’s going on?”

“I really can’t talk about it right now. Do you have any plans after this?”

“No.” I was a little worried about Jenna’s urgent tone.

“Jenna is everything alright?”

“No, that’s why I want to talk to you in private.”

“Okay, let’s go somewhere so we can talk.

It was rare for Jenna to confide in me. She usually shared her most intimate thoughts

with the other girls. We all walked towards the baggage claim to get our luggage.
