(a) Holding
At the start, the athlete keeps the metallic shot on his right hand between
the fingers and thumb. This action is called holding.
(b) Stance
After holding the shot, the athlete stands in a comfortable position in a
circle. But, he remains facing opposite to the direction of throw. It makes
him easy to glide. The next step is to accumulate momentum in the shot.
(c) Glide
After getting into the stance position, the athlete rotates his body speedily
to gain more energy on the shot. This action is called glide.
(d) Release
At this stage, the shot is released towards the direction of throw with the
force transferred from the fingers to the shot.
(e) Reverse or Flow-Through
This stage is also known as recovery. It is the stage of regaining normal
body posture after releasing the shot.
15.4.1 Ball Throw
It is a lead-up game to gain the efficiency in shot-put. This game is also
practised with the steps of shot-put. They are holding, stance, glide,
release, and flow-through. Instead of using a metallic heavy shot, athletes
use a ball according to their convenience.

15.5 Relay Games
Relay games are played as group competitions. Therefore, total participants
are first divided into two or more groups having equal number of members
each. We discuss on ‘partner carrying relay’ here.
Partner carrying relay
This game is suitable among students in school. Before starting the game,
students are divided into two or more groups in such a way that they can
make pairs of almost similar weight and height. All groups are arranged in
separate files consisting of paired partners. There is a straight line drawn
near a marginal side of the field according to the appropriateness. All
pairs stand at the back of starting line.
When the starting signal is given, the front pairs of each file start their
run carrying their partners. Each running pair carries a baton, a short
piece of wood, which is handed over to the next pair of own team after
completion of a complete round. This process is continued until all the
pairs complete the course. The team, which completes the all pair’s
rounds first, is declared the winner.
