GOOD GRIEF MI DWEE K B I B LE S E R V I C E J A N U A R Y 3 0 , 2 0 2 4 W I T H S E N I O R P A S T O R , J A M E S D . G A I L L I A R D In order to heal, we must understand the cycles, stages and processes of grief while knowing that God is the only source of permanent comfort in our struggles. We started our February Midweek Bible Service with “Good Grief”. In 2 Corinthians, chapter 1, the pericope states, “Comfort in Suffering,” meaning we will suffer, but we do not have to suffer alone. Remember, God uses people. There is healing here. I encourage you to join us for Part 2. Meet us Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 7 P.M. in the CPAW or E-City Campus. If you weren’t here for Part 1, it is available online. https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=0irUj0g6BEc. This is a powerful message. This is a message that you need to put in your spirit because you will need it one day. “Grief is a social event so it can not be resolved in isolation. The devil will convince you don’t need to talk to anyone about how you feel...” Enjoy an excerpt from Part 1 of “Good Grief”. “When anyone or anything has emotional value to you, when you lose it, it creates a cycle of grief. Why am I saying this? We have to not act hyper-spiritual because I joined the Church, and because I know the Bible, and because I love Jesus means I don't get to grieve. This is what I want you to see. If a person goes physically to the doctor because they need surgery and they cut into their body over time that body begins to heal. What surgery is to my physical body is what grieving is to my emotional system. In the same way, I don't get to trip, break something, have my leg cut open, put my bone back together, nobody expects me to go running the next day. But when it comes to emotional stuff everybody wants to help me. I don't understand why it's taking you so long. Why is it so deep? You should be healed by now. It's because they don't understand the process. Now, before y'all shout too loud, but in the same way week by week I get healed physically there ought to be evidence that I am healing emotionally. At some point, I got to get all right. I got to get stronger. At some point, I got to stand up on my feet again.” “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any [a]trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. 5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our [b]consolation also abounds through Christ. 6 Now if we are afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effective for enduring the same sufferings which we also suffer. Or if we are comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation. 7 And our hope for you is steadfast, because we know that as you are partakers of the sufferings, so also you will partake of the consolation.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-7

SATURDAY, JUNE 7TH 123-456-7890 REGISTRATION: CONFERENCE RECAP WRITTEN BY JOYCE WILLIAMS The week leading up to the E4 Church Conference at Word Tabernacle Church [WTC] in Rocky Mount, North Carolina was like preparing to attend your favorite musical concert starring, Father God and our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ with special guests. I was excited the entire week because this was my first church conference at WTC, and I kept visualizing what the weekend would look like. Let’s just say that I was off by miles, because the entire weekend was Paramount and was like a revival! No stone was left unturned as we danced, clapped and stomped our feet to songs praising Father God and Lord Jesus. It was evident that everyone had a wonderful time fellowshipping together as we shouted to the teachings and sermons to some of the most prolific and anointed minsters and speakers in the country, which included Rev. Dr.’s Steven Hurd, John Faison, Eric Mason, DeForest Soaries, Jr., Janae-Pitts-Murdock, Peter Wherry and Bishop Rosie O’Neal. The 3-day conference started Friday afternoon with a bonus session on the spirit, system, and structures of successful ministry with Pastors James Gailliard and other Executive Team Members followed by Dr. Steven Hurd. Dr. Hurd who is not only a terrific pastor and speaker but he’s also a world-renowned gospel artist and an author. He is a graduate of Howard University with a Business Music degree. He talked to us about How Authenticity Brings Forth Fruit and regaled us with his musical talents during the entire weekend with his own songs and old spiritual favorites from yesteryear and was backed by some of WTC’s own talented and anointed choir members, including Robin Dunn and Rachel McCall. We loved every moment! Also, ministering on Friday evening, was Rev. Dr. John Faison, Sr., he is also a Professor and a Veteran and is the Senior Pastor at Watson Grove Baptist Church in Nashville and Franklin, TN. He spoke to us on the subject, Don’t Miss God, ACTS 1:22-26. “ God does not have equals, He’s omnipotent and sovereign and when you get a no from God, He’s trying to save you from yourself, because your No has a Purpose!” He is such a gifted speaker! It was an early morning start on Saturday, January 27 with a light breakfast set up for everyone as the church doors opened at 7am. The conference started promptly at 8am with Rev. Dr. DeForest Soaries Jr., who hails from Montclair, New Jersey. He is also a well-known author with a host of books he has penned, including books on financial security. He is the former Secretary of State of New Jersey and the former Chairman of the Federal Election Assistance Commission. Dr. Soaries retired from the church in 2021, but he still makes special appearances from time to time and WTC is always happy to welcome him to minister to us. Dr. Soaries’ topic was, Choose The Right Pool John 9:1-7. His message was so clear and succinct as he talked about how the “Power of God can be revealed in us and when you let Jesus guide your decisions, you will always choose wisely.” I also loved his message that “your heritage should teach you the history of your culture, and that you should treat ALL people with love and respect.” His business acumen spoke volumes! Stephen Hurd E4 Worship Leader

Rev. Dr. Peter Wherry, who has also written several books, spoke to us on Saturday morning as well; he has been in the Gospel Ministry for over 45 years. He is a native of Buffalo, New York and is the Senior Pastor at Mayfield Memorial Missionary Baptist Church in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Wherry talked about Wisdom in the Weeds, Matthew 13:24-30; 36-43. “The crop we get may not always be the crop we planted. Life has weeds and sometimes we need to learn to live with weeds. Weed free living is putting weeds in their proper perspective.“ He unpacked a lot of knowledge! On Saturday after lunch had been served, Pastor Gailliard hosted a Q&A Leadership Panel Discussion with the invited Ministers with talks about having the Right Team in Place, taking the time to re-empower your gifts every 4-5 years to hone your gifts. Listen to the gifts of people and observe them. Look for people to be a part of your team who have High Emotional Intelligence, Commitment and Philosophy. They discussed having a healthy Work-Life-Balance… and how important it is to stay healthy mentally, physically and emotionally. Character is who you are and what you do when no one else is watching. We grow in character by having accountability and off the grid and qualitative conversations. You have to give people time to evolve and grow with healthy boundaries, while practicing grace and mercy. Rev. Dr. Eric Mason is the Founder and Lead Pastor of Epiphany Fellowship Church in Philadelphia, PA. and an author of many Christian books. He ministered to us on Leadership in the Church and Re-branding the Church, John 15:3 and we were riveted. “We have to be proper brand ambassadors in the church and the church must be clear on who Jesus is. The church must see itself as spiritual beacons on Earth, because God is trying to build a recognizable entity.” His words were powerful! On Sunday, January 28, we were once again graced with words of wisdom from Rev. Dr. DeForest Soaries who left us all awestruck with his retrospective ministry and acumen about Meditations for Financial Freedom. “Don’t fall in love with things of the world, support God’s word instead,” John 2:15. Great and impactful life lessons! Rev. Dr. Janae Pitts-Murdock is from Detroit, MI and is the Senior Pastor of Light of the World Church in Indianapolis, IN. She spoke to us about Discipleship in the Church and The Parable of the Sower, Mark 4: 1-9. “The Sower sows the seed and there is no guarantee that when you sow seeds, you’ll get what you want because you can’t control the soil. When you sow seeds into good, healthy soil, you generate good fruit. We must keep sowing seeds until you see good fruit, because it’s better to keep sowing seeds as opposed to sowing no seeds at all.” “Discipleship is doing what Jesus says, even when it’s inconvenient. It’s an on-going process as we ourselves are being shaped and formed. Where do we all stand in our weekly worship with bible study and reading, cultivating spiritual friendships, daily prayer, giving and service to the church? We are all responsible for developing our growth and maturity to become disciples in the church.” She was mesmerizing! Bishop Rosie O’Neal was the last speaker on Saturday, but there is something to the old adage, “save the best for last.” She is the Senior Pastor of Koinonia Christian Center Church in Greenville and Raleigh, NC. She is also the founder and presiding Bishop of Koinonia Fellowship of Churches and Ministries (KFCM) and provides coverage for over 25 churches both domestically and internationally. Bishop O’Neal spoke about Membership in the Church, and accessing favor through faithfulness to God’s agenda, from the book of Exodus 17:8-14. “Every believer should live out the Christian experience by being connected to the body of the church. You can’t develop unless you’re working on things bigger than you are.” The conference closed with a Living Legend luncheon with Rev. Dr. Starsky Wilson, who is an Activist and Minister, and the President of the Children's Defense Fund. He is known for advocating for children's rights and racial equity. All in all, the conference was an absolute success with so much information unpacked…life lessons, leadership, character building networking, team building, spiritual friendships, church memberships, tithing and so much more. At Word Tabernacle Church, we not only embody what E4 reflects, which is Educate, Encourage, Empower and Equip… We Thrive! We as believers are all equal in the eyes of God. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ENFIELD, NC – A woman-operated nonprofit organization, She Empowers, joined forces with Innovative Networking Group (ING) and St. Paul Baptist Church to bring NC IDEA’s Ice House Entrepreneurship Program (IHEP) to Halifax County, specifically Enfield, NC, and surrounding areas. This collaboration encourages and empowers women entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, nonprofit organizers, and high achievers in the workplace to further their education, to develop their creative and communication skills while honing their problem-solving and critical thinking skills. She Empowers, ING, and NC IDEA is a powerful trifecta for cultivating the entrepreneurial spirit within this area of eastern North Carolina whether through business or nonprofit organization creation, particularly among Black women. Planting the Ice House Entrepreneurship Program in the heart of one of the most underserved, impoverished predominantly Black, and largely female-populated areas is quite intentional. About this, She Empowers CEO, Trishonda Roberson shares, “Sometimes the greatest hindrance to us achieving our goals, is our mindset. I am grateful to NC IDEA for helping us shift the mindsets of women in Halifax County and pushing them to pursue their dreams. Our vision is to transform the world, one woman at a time and efforts like this help us to do just that.” “ING is grateful to be a part of NC IDEA's quest to offer the Entrepreneurial Learning Initiative (ELI) Mindset cohort to 100,000 North Carolinians across this great state, with the first-ever five-night series in Enfield. We thank She Empowers for her vision and mission to support the women in this great community, and the surrounding areas,” said Christina Williams-DeBrew and Tasha Williams, sisters and business partners, at Innovative Networking Group. Hosted in the Family Life Center of the St. Paul Baptist Church located at 421 S. McDaniel St., this five-week intensive program was conducted on Monday evenings. Each session included dinner, discussion, instruction, and interactive activities.“We are thankful to partner with and to host such an amazing effort for our Enfield community. It is our desire to continue to provide spaces for people to grow and live out their purpose,” stated Pastor Felix O. Petteway, St. Paul Baptist Church. THE BLACK CHURCH The African Meeting House opened in 1806 and is the oldest surviving Black church structure in the nation. Built by a small but powerful free African American community, it served as a church, school and gathering place for political activism and cultural life.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH february 2024 Presented by Olivia Wilson by Olivia Wilson february 2024 Richard Allen was born February 14, 1760, enslaved to Benjamin Chew, a Quaker lawyer in Philadelphia. As a child, he was sold to Stockley Sturgis, a plantation owner in Dover, DE where Allen taught himself to read and write. Allen’s owner was involved in the Methodist Church and permitted his slaves to attend their services. Allen was also drawn to the Church and began evangelizing as a teenager while still enslaved. In 1780, he bought his freedom at a cost of $2000 (approximately $36,364 in modern U.S. dollars), by working on his own time over a period of five years. He continued his involvement with the Church and in 1786 he became a preacher at St. George’s Methodist Church, but was only permitted to conduct segregated sermons. The frustration of segregation and further racial tensions led Allen and more than forty others to leave St. George’s. In 1787, Richard Allen and Absalom Jones established the Free African Society (FAS). This civic organization drew freemen, freedom seekers, and Haitian refugees. They assisted people in finding work and homes, provided literacy and financial education, and assisted in community projects. One such event that employed members of FAS was the Yellow Fever Epidemic. Doctors promoted the falsehood that African Americans could not contract the illness and FAS members were hired as nurses, collected human remains, and buried them for the city of Philadelphia. Many of them died of the illness. While they remained friends and colleagues, Allen and Jones parted ways religiously. Absalom Jones established the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas in 1792 and became the first African American ordained priest. Allen built the Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church (NAID 71997374) in 1793. The original Church was demolished and replaced with a red brick building in 1805 and was completed in 1890. A tunnel was constructed to connect to the Arch Street Friends Meeting House (NAID 71997016). This became part of the Underground Railroad. In 1816, Allen united other African Methodist congregations from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland to officially form the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) at a meeting in Philadelphia. He was then elected Bishop. Allen spent the remainder of his life tending his station on the Underground Railroad, along with his wife Sarah Bass. He also worked with community leaders to open schools for African Americans. His life’s work established ways African Americans (both freed and enslaved) could organize, learn, and help one another. These efforts set the wheels in motion for others to lead across the country. Allen passed away at his home on March 26, 1831, and is buried in the basement of Mother Bethel in Philadelphia. “As much as I believe that black history should be taught in schools, even if it’s taught in schools, we should never allow the schools to have the first and last word on who we are. We have to teach it ourselves. Don’t forget who you are. Proverbs said it like this, “Don’t remove the ancient landmarks”. Word Tabernacle, 19 years old has emerged as a part of the Continuum of what God did to use black people to have an ark to protect us from the tidal wave of oppression. Word Tabernacle is an extension of the church that told our people the Supreme Court may say we have no rights that white people have to honor, but the Bible says we are somebody because God made us. When the rich family that my grandmother worked for allowed their children to call my grandmother by her first name, their children treated her like a child. On Sunday morning, Grandma went to Trinity Temple Church of God in Christ, and they called her Mother Pinker. When we could not vote for the mayor, the governor, the judge, or the president, we came to church, and we voted for deacons, trustees, usher presidents, and pastors. This is who we are! You are Word Tabernacle, but you are the black church. The Black Church has never been a church for black people; the black church has been a church that said, yes, we want to go to heaven, but we want to be treated with justice while we’re down here on earth. It was the church that started burial societies when insurance companies would not sell us policies. It was our black church that started universities when we could not go to Harvard, Princeton, and Yale. It was the black church! When John Johnson saw a Life magazine, and said, “I’ve never seen a black person on the cover”. John Johnson said, “I'll start my magazine. I’m not going to beg them to do it for us. I’m going to put Harry Belafonte, Cecily Tyson, and Frederick Douglas. I’m going to put our people on the cover”. The newspaper stands would not sell Ebony magazine. Johnson came to the black church, and ushers, nurses, and scholarship clubs began selling subscriptions to Ebony magazine. Had there been no black church, there would have been no Ebony magazine. It has been our churches that have built housing for our people. It has been our churches that supported our businesses. It has been our churches that have mobilized people to register and vote for people like our black judges. That is who we are; we are the black church. If we mess around and forget that, we will become an irrelevant celebration of secular culture calling it a church. We are the nurturers of black men who fought in the Revolutionary War thinking they’d be free if we won and they went right back to slavery. We are the ones who wiped the tears of mothers whose sons were lynched downtown where they sold popcorn as if it was sport. We are the ones who sold cakes, pies, and fried chicken to raise money to send each other’s children to college. We are the ones who have challenged America to be what Dr. King said, to be true to what it said on paper. We’re the ones who have taught this country that until all of us are free, none of us is free. If we know who we are, we will avoid getting caught up in a crowd of pseudo-Christian popularity. We will follow the words of Jesus who said, “If anyone would follow me, let him take up his cross, deny himself and follow.” Don’t get caught up in this cosmic santa claus cotton candy shallow religion. You be the church, and be able to answer grandma’s questions, have you got good religion, because there’s a lot of bad religion circulating town.” No black church has ever been found guilty of discriminating against non-black people because that is who we are. We come from a tradition that is both priestly and prophetic. We speak with the audacity of Old Testament prophets and with the love and grace of New Testament disciples. If we forget our heritage, not only will we not receive what God has for us, but we’ll also miss the mission God has put in our hands. the black church INTERSECTIONS 18

According to the WTC Counseling team, when most couples get engaged, the woman’s thoughts are filled with sheer excitement and often start with, “oh my gosh, I have a wedding to plan!” They automatically think of their dress, the colors, the wedding venue, bridesmaids, the wedding planner, photographer, videographer… the list goes on. It can become an overwhelming process with a lot to think about and can cause major anxiety for some couples. The best advice is to slow your thoughts, take a breath, and start with Pre-Marital Counseling. Before you start planning a wedding, focus on the bigger picture, which is the marriage. Many people put all their effort, money, and time into planning a wedding, and they don’t have a clue what the marriage will look like. I know that we’ve all heard this before, but it’s true… the most important thing to do is to fully invest in your marriage because that’s where you’ll get more bang for your buck. “Therefore, a man shall leave hisfather and mother and hold fast to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.” Genesis 2:24
