MAR 29 THE EASTERN NC MINISTERIAL ALLIANCE G O O D FRIDAY COMMUNITY WIDE SERVICE Bishop Shelton Daniel ENCMA President James D. Gailliard, Senior Pastor Host MAR 31 TH ST SUNRISE SERVICE 6:58AM (WOMEN ONLY) EASTER WORSHIP 9AM 1030 AM

FROM THE OFFICE OF THE SENIOR PASTOR As we enter Women’s History Month, let us reflect upon the profound role Black Women have played in shaping the identity and spirit of the Black Church. From the earliest days of our history, women have not only been pillars of faith, but YOU have also been trailblazers in leadership, guiding our communities with wisdom, grace, and strength, vital to the expansion of the church and spreading of The Gospel. Jesus is our cornerstone and women are, and have been, the mortar. I am certain that we can all agree that Black Women ARE the Black Church. Our journey is illuminated by the remarkable leadership of women such as Jarena Lee and Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie, who defied societal norms to answer the call to ministry. Their courage and conviction paved the way for women to ascend to positions of authority and influence within the Black Church. Even within the journey of Word Tabernacle Church, we have Minister Beatrice Battle, the first woman licensed by the Neuse River Baptist Association. We have Minister Barbara Feaster and Mrs. Sylvia Britt who partnered to establish the first annual “Dialogue with My Daughters” more than 11 years ago. We have Pastor Stephanie M. Battle, our first Associate Pastor. In fact, 55% of the Ministerial Staff, 53% of our Executive Leadership, 62% of our greater Leadership Team, and 49% of our Paid Staff are women. It is no secret that Black women play significant roles in shaping the religious and spiritual life of their families and communities, Black women still face unique challenges within the Black Church settings. While leading congregations as pastors and elders, serving on boards and leading committees, standing at the forefront of decision-making and vision-casting, and shaping the direction and mission of our faith communities, Black women must navigate issues related to gender, race, and socioeconomic status – still.Their leadership is characterized by a deep commitment to justice, compassion, and holistic ministry, addressing the spiritual, social, and material needs of our congregations and communities while being met with resistance from their male, and oftentimes female, counterparts. Today, it appears that women continue to occupy significant leadership roles within our congregations and denominations. Studies show that a growing number of Black churches are led by women pastors, and women hold key positions in denominational leadership, seminaries, and theological institutions. Although women account for an astounding 66-88 percent of the Black Church, only 10 percent are in positions of leadership, and of that, only one percent are in the role of senior pastor. Perhaps, more alarming is the large number of Black Women who worship at predominantly white churches with no opportunity to enter a leadership role. Dear Family, Partners, and Friends-

In honoring the legacy of remarkable women leaders, we pay tribute to the Reverend Dr. Gina Stewart, the senior pastor of Christ Missionary Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee, and a Black Woman of many firsts, including being the first Black Woman elected to serve an established Black Baptist congregation. Dr. Stewart recently made controversial history as the first woman to preach at the National Baptist Convention, preaching on the courage of Claudia. She has said of her historic moment, “January 23rd opens the door for critical discussions about Jesus and justice, offering a chance to champion women by rethinking our theologies and reshaping our pulpits, workplaces, and platforms into more equitable spaces as we continue the long quest for gender equality and justice.” As a barrier-breaker, Steward’s exemplary servant leadership has inspired countless individuals across the globe. Her visionary leadership has not only revitalized congregational life but also empowered communities to confront systemic injustices and embrace the transformative power of love and reconciliation. Why am I a strong proponent of propelling women forward in positions of leadership within the Black Church and beyond? I am glad you asked. Leadership, authority, and decision-making should be proportionate in all spaces and sectors. As we move forward, I remain committed to seeing an increase in women in the areas of philanthropy, corporations, and government. Join me in committing to supporting, empowering, and amplifying the voices of women. Together, may we continue to strive for a future where all God's children are recognized, valued, and empowered to fulfill their divine potential. Let us, collectively, continue walking through the door of which Dr. Stewart spoke: the door that offers the chance for real system-level change. From Watchnight to the E4 Conference, to Dialogue with My Daughters, to Good Friday and Easter Service, we have been and continue to be busy building God’s kingdom!! Effective progress toward our vision, to see Everyone Thriving, requires that a significant number of people serve. Over the course of this year, I’d like to acknowledge the many ministries, volunteers, and staff who serve so faithfully and make Word Tabernacle Church so amazing. This month, I want to thank two ministries and one individual. The Word Tab New Spirit Dancers have blessed us tremendously, serving even beyond Sunday worship! These young ladies demonstrate their dedication and commitment as they minister. Thank you to each young woman for her willingness to serve and her parents for enabling her to serve. The Culinary Ministry has been incredibly busy! They fed us on Tuesday nights and at numerous special events! And they do it with a smile. I am so grateful and appreciative of each of you for your sacrifice of time. Thank you also to the parents of the very young members of the ministry who are learning at an early age the reward and joy of serving others! Thank you to Ms. Mary Epps who has been faithful, kind, and supportive of her church family and personal family. Her commitment to and heart towards the ministry is humbling and inspiring. Thank you to ALL who serve. You are very much appreciated! Word Tabernacle Church would not be the church we are without the sacrifice of your gifts and your time. If you are not currently serving in a ministry and would like to, please go to www.wordtab.net and select “Serve”. I’m certain there is not a single ministry that could not use additional help to do the work of building God’s Kingdom. Everyone Thriving! Peace and Blessings, Lady Angela Angela Watkins Gailliard Thank you for a wonderful start to 2024!

Be Above Reproach—Minimize the number of men who have stories about you. Carry no baggage from the past. Repent and become a “new creation.” (v. 16) 3. Be Active—Rebekah was blessed at the well. She was not feeling sorry for herself (no pity parties). God uses “activity” to foster opportunities. (v.16) 4. Be Approachable—She was pleasant (v. 17) 5. Be Attentive—Being attentive to a man does not make you (us) less than a man. Don’t be selfish. (v. 17-18) I PRAY THE GOD OF PEACE WILL SANCTIFY US AND THAT OUR SOUL, BODY, AND SPIRIT HE WILL FREE. KEEP PRAYING FOR OUR SISTERS JOURNEY AND REMEMBER IT’S NOT ME, IT IS WE. INTERSECTIONS 10

MY SISTER’S KEEPER The Lord expects us to be loving We should always remember to be kind. Through us, people should see Jesus Through our deeds, we should let our light shine. Our character should represent Jesus Because in His image we were designed. We won’t conform but we were transformed Through God’s Word we must renew our mind. Disciples are faithful to Jesus, His Word and His Spirit should lead. We pray for wisdom and discernment We await His answer before we proceed. As we spend time alone with Jesus Our relationship with Him will grow Then we live out the fruit of the spirit And good fruit is what we will sow. To be clear sanctification isn’t easy Our walk with God will include pain, But because Jesus sacrificed for us Eternal life is what we will gain. As sisters in Christ, we hold up His banner, For each other we support and pray Our sisters should feel encouraged Because God’s love is what we display. We’ve been called to be His disciples Love through us all should see We have to be credible witnesses So faith in Jesus; others decree. I pray the God of peace will sanctify us And that our soul, body, and spirit He will be free. Keep praying for our sister’s journey And remember it’s not me, it is we. 6. Be Ambitious—She worked and sacrificed her time and energy. She gave water to 10 camels (each drank 20 gallons of water). (v. 19-20) 7. Be Accommodating—She offered lodging and provisions. THE 2023 NCHSAA 3-A STATE TENNIS SINGLES CHAMPION WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH PRESENTS INTERSECTIONS 18

M C K I N L E Y B A T T L E is an evolving, present, and past display of history. Her athletic resume is still a work in progress, but at the very least, McKinley will always be known as the 2023 North Carolina High School Athletic Association 3-state tennis singles champion. When McKinley began playing tennis, it was just something that she agreed to do with her grandfather and later with her mother, Stephanie. Even as McKinley matured, improved, and became more aware of her technique, being one of the top tennis players in the state wasn’t something she scribbled down in a notebook like most tennis protégés. “It never crossed my mind, McKinley said. “I always set goals for myself, but those are to just be better in the next match than I was in the previous match. I just take it one match at a time.” Yet, McKinley will stand on the baseline of every court she plays in the future as a history-maker: She is the first NCHSAA 3-A African American tennis champion, as well as the first player to win the championship match after losing the first set. Every visitor to the Rocky Mount High School gymnasium will see her name. Following the school’s tradition, all state champions have their banners hung in the gym. As a member of the girls’ varsity basketball team, she plays games in a gym that displays her name above the court, but McKinley doesn’t play for attention. While she admits that it’s “cool” to see the banner, it isn’t her motivating factor. All the attention that comes from being a state champion doesn’t line up with McKinley’s personality. She politely answers the questions others might have about her accomplishments; McKinley’s day-to-day routines have not changed. Since her state championship victory, she was named WRAL’s High School OT Player of the Year and was spotlighted recently by NUTRADRiP IV Hydration. “It has brought more attention, but nothing in my life has changed,” McKinley said. “I try to always be mindful that this is a gift that God has given me, and that it can be taken away at any moment. I shouldn’t take it for granted or waste any time.” Now that McKinley has won a state championship as a junior, the question arises, “What’s next?” What colleges have shown interest? Those are all questions McKinley, 16, is more equipped to answer than she might have a few years ago when she admitted small things stopped her from playing her best matches. “Tennis has taught me how to handle adversity, control my emotions and push through,” McKinley said. “I’ve seen growth from my freshman through junior years in being able to stay levelheaded.” What McKinley knows is that she will have options at Division I and II levels after graduating in 2025 and pursuing Kinesiology. There are still some improvements she would like to make in her game, mainly winning points at the net and becoming more consistent with her serve. Her training will be put on hold for the coming months, as she recovers from a knee injury that brings uncertainty to her senior season. She has continually challenged her game against many opponents who learned the sport on country club courts. McKinley has never needed any of that. Her support system of family and coaches has been enough. Her humble, but confident approach has served her well. She knows she isn’t a perfect player, and that is OK. “Hopefully in the future, my faith will remain strong, and I will continue to lean on God to take me where I need to go and get me through whatever I’m facing,” McKinley said. “In the end, my parents always remind me that if you learn something, then you never lose.” (Photos courtesy of WRAL, HighSchool OT.) story by Jessie Nunery

Interview Jassmin Smith-Clark Choreographer ~ Dancer Extraordinaire ~ New Spirit Children’s Dance Ministry Ministry Leader Interview by: Joyce Williams

The world of dance is just that. It is a world within itself with a whirlwind of emotions that circles throughout your body. It is a feeling that only true dancers can understand. It isn’t something you can explain to anyone because it’s a feeling that populates your soul. Of course, I can only speak for myself, but I imagine that most dancers have their soliloquy. I started dancing almost as soon as I could walk and the feeling it gave me as a kid was an outlet of release, expression, and pure joy and that feeling has never left me. It has stayed with me my entire life because when I’m moving, all I hear is the music and the beat and I respond to it like we’re best friends. Today, I’m going to chat with Jassmin Smith-Clark, the Ministry Leader and amazing choreographer for the New Spirit Children’s Dance Ministry of Word Tabernacle Church (WTC) in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Jassmin, it’s great to speak with you today and I’m excited to learn more about your story and your young dance team. First, I’d like to say that you are an excellent choreographer, and you work with a talented group of young girls, known as the “New Spirit Dancers” at WTC. Q: What was it that piqued your interest in dance early on? Can you give me a little more insight about that? Growing up, I struggled with self-esteem. I constantly questioned whether I was good enough, pretty enough, or just enough in general. Dance was the one thing that I never questioned whether I was enough. No one could tell me I wasn’t good! It was my safe space. It was my zone of genius. I got my first bout of dancing in church. I was one of the founding members of the Liturgical Expressions Dance Ministry at my home church, First Baptist Church, in Fayetteville, NC. This newfound passion pushed me to want more. I wanted to truly study dance and become better! I took my first dance class at age 11 and haven’t looked back. Once I reached high school, I was introduced to the marching band where I served as captain of my dance line all 4 years of high school. I was the first freshman to ever be named captain. After graduating high school, I attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and danced with Opeyo! Dance Company and Misconception Hip Hop Dance Company, where I sat on the Executive Board. I also danced with eClipse, the versatile auxiliary unit to the Marching Sound Machine at North Carolina Central University (Eagle Pride!). Upon graduating, I pursued a professional career as a dancer and toured with a Grammy-nominated R&B artist. Self-doubt crept in and prevented me from continuing that journey, but I praised God in the midst for what was able to be birthed afterward. After I discontinued my professional career as a dancer, I threw myself into birthing my dance studio. In 2016, I launched Just Dance! Academy. Following the passing of my stepfather in 2021, I closed my dance studio but knew that wasn’t the end of what God had called me to do with dance in Rocky Mount. In January 2022, I met Lundun Jones of Lulu Jones Dance Academy and we both felt God’s call to merge our businesses and open a new dance studio together. In April 2022, we relaunched Studio252 and have been creating a safe space for dancers of color by bringing dance, cheer, and majorette to the Rocky Mount community. PERFORMING ARTS Ja s s min Clark

In January 2022, I approached Ms. Audrey Mikell about becoming involved with dance at WTC, because God had given me this incredible gift and I felt obligated to give it back to Him! I’m also motivated by the idea that I’m inspiring the next generation of dancers who might be getting their first dose of dance in church like I did. God is so faithful, and I’m excited about the small part I get to play in the development of this ministry. Q: You have such a beautiful and poignant story, which I’m certain will resonate with a lot of aspiring dancers and people in general How long have you been a member of WTC? I had been a long-time visitor of WTC since 2015 and in 2018, I accepted the formal call to join the work that God was doing here! Q: What is your official title at WTC and how long have you been in this role? What does your ministry leader role of the New Spirit dancers look like and what does that entail? At WTC, I serve as the Ministry Leader for New Spirit Children’s Dance Ministry. Being the ministry leader of New Spirit is much more than just creating dances. It’s truly about using dance as an avenue to cultivate relationships between our dancers and our God and what that looks like for the kindergarten to fifth-grade students we serve. Rehearsals start with a 10-minute meditation time. Each dancer is given a journal and gets 10 minutes to just sit quietly with our Father. After their time, we open in group prayer and proceed to enter our devotion time. This time is dedicated to helping our dancers unpack the lyrics of the songs we minister to, scriptural references, and how the concepts apply to their lives. Rehearsal closes with group prayer (led by a dancer) and afterwards, they’re prompted to “hug 3 people and tell them that you love them.” We’re truly focused on building a community of kids who love God, dance, and each other! Q: That sounds awesome and somewhat ethereal...thank you for painting such a beautiful picture. Can you tell me a bit about the 2023 Gospel Explosion Talent Festival? How did that go? It sounds like it was amazing. The 2023 Gospel Explosion Talent Festival was AMAZING! It was such a great experience for our kids to do ministry outside the walls of the church. While we didn’t get the results we were hoping for, we have two very proud moments that will stay with us. First, there were 300 possible points we could have received. New Spirit earned 294 of those points. There was one point that separated us from third place. Secondly, in the middle of the performance, the music cut off, but our dancers did not skip a beat! To continue dancing with such passion, emotion, and precision without music was hands down the most professional thing I could have asked for from such little people! We’re looking forward to taking advantage of more opportunities to minister outside the walls of the church. Q: Where did the inspiration for the New Spirit name come from? Our name is based on Ezekial 36:26, “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”

Q: That’s beautiful, I love that. How long has the dance team been together? What are the dancers’ names and how many are in the group? We relaunched the ministry in February 2022, so we are rapidly approaching 2 years! We started with 8 dancers and now have 21 dancers in our ministry. Their names are… Jordyn Baskerville, Mayah Battle, Cali Cooper, McKenna Cooper, Aubree Davis, Ashlynn Edge, Haven Everett, Morrisyn Farmer, Arayah Hardy, Kendall Johnson, Amia Jones, Harper Logan, Naima Nunery, Bobbi Parrish, Khaleesi Parrish, Jamiyah Revis, JaNiyah Revis, Camille Sledge, Camiya Sledge, Nylah Thomas-Bulluck, Savannah Wilkins Q: You have quite a sizeable dance team, which is great. I always look forward to their performances and I’m sure that the rest of the congregation does as well. They’re all wonderful dancers, which I accredit to a lot of your work. What significance do you all feel that dance plays during worship? Dance is so significant during worship. There are times when we don’t have the words to articulate what it is that we seek, desire, or need from God. In times when all I can do is stretch my hand, press, lean, or rock, I’m in such a vulnerable space that allows the Holy Spirit to literally move through me and bring forth a deliverance, freedom, or prophecy for his people. There is vulnerability which allows dancers to become literal conduits for His work. Our worship experiences should be just that…experiences. We should experience God in community and dance plays an integral role in that experience. Q: Well said and I couldn’t agree more. Is there anything new and exciting that you’d like people to know about? Yes, as a matter of fact, there is. The New Spirit Dance Ministry has been nominated for the Gospel Choice Music Awards’ Praise Dance Ministry of the Year! The competition is split into two phases. Phase 1 runs March 17-31 and is based on popular vote. Voting is unlimited during Phase 1. Nominees with the highest number of votes will advance to Phase 2, April 14-27. During this phase, voting is limited to one vote per person in addition to being reviewed by a GCMA panel. The awards show will be held in Atlanta, Georgia on June 29, 2024. We don’t have the link yet… we won’t have it until it opens on March 17th. All we know is that folks will need to go to www.gospelchoicemusicawards.com and click on the “Vote” tab. Once there, you can scroll down to the Praise Dance Ministry of the Year category and select New Spirit! Q: Wow, congratulations to all of you! That is super exciting, you and your team must be thrilled! Please remember to vote for New Spirit, everyone! Jassmin, if someone wanted to become a member of the dance team, what are the necessary steps they need to take? We are so excited about the work the Lord is doing through New Spirit! We welcome all dancers from kindergarten to fifth grade. If anyone is interested in joining our dance ministry, please reach out to us at [email protected] and a member of our team will get back to you within 48 hours. We look forward to having you join us! Thank you so much, Jassmin; it was great speaking with you today and we’re excited to see more mesmerizing and captivating choreography from you. We will continue to look out for more beautiful performances from the New Spirit Children’s Dance Ministry at WTC as they continue to move in the spirit of God’s Word. Everyone Thriving! After describing a better effort in the second quarter, the coach spoke about dominant “7-footers” before eventually wrapping up his thoughts on the game. It was only the beginning for Christopher Bess. Although just a four-year-old who has been mimicking the actions of his father, Reggie, -- Tarboro boys’ varsity basketball coach -- for as long as he could stand and talk, Christopher’s words and moves now have the attention of the nation. After a local basketball video publication shared a video of Christopher on the sidelines, it went viral. Soon enough, “Good Morning America”, “SportsCenter” and “CBS This Morning” all showed Christopher’s video to national audiences. A well-known comedian recently gave Christopher the coaching nicknames “Teletubby” Smith and “Doc McStuffins Rivers.” Christopher’s Instagram page reached 50,000 followers in less than a week, with many of the videos showing interactions with the Tarboro boys’ basketball team, his brother, Reggie, and of course, referees. “Reggie and I were at first naturally nervous and a bit apprehensive,” Christopher’s mother, Natalie, said. “He is very young and impressionable, and of course we want to protect him, but he’s a natural when it comes to all of this, and we’ve felt nothing but love.” Natalie said Christopher naturally loves basketball, coaching basketball, football and T-ball. He also likes to read and play outside. Congratulations, coach Christopher on your success! story by Jessie Nunery
