Missed DWD, the Kick-off Event for our Women's Ministry 2023? Yes, it was a powerful time, and our senior pastor, James David Gailliard brought an amazing life-changing word. We've included the outline, "I Can do Both". Being in the room, and on our E-City Campus during the event was an experience that set the temperature for the rest of the year. Take a moment to read and study the scriptures, and partake of the table God laid out for his daughters at the conference. Desires Distractions Devotions DIALOGUE WITH MY DAUGHTERS 13 FEBRUARY 2023 "I C A N DO BOTH" with Senior Pastor James D. Gailliard Women's Ministry Conference @Intersections PAGE 4

I. Introduction a. When balance is discussed it’s almost always in the wrong context b. Martha OR Mary c. Martha AND Mary d. This passage is not here to encourage us to retreat into our prayer huddles and bible studies while ignoring our responsibility to engage our community, meet the needs of our faith family, or work to ensure that ministry is taking place. e. Nor is this passage here to exalt service over personal devotion. It seeks to marry the two. It is about the necessity and priority of practicing the presence of God through the Word of God and fellowship with God in prayer and meditation as well as working hard at and being faithful in our service. f. Mary was the sister of Martha and Lazarus. She is distinguished from other Mary's in the Bible as ''Mary of Bethany.'' g. The most interesting feature of Mary's life is that each time you find her mentioned in the Bible she is always at the feet of Jesus. h. In Luke 10:39, she is found sitting at His feet. i. In John 11:32, she is found falling at His feet. j. In John 12:3, she is found bowing at His feet. Her favorite place was at the feet of Jesus. At His feet was a common occurrence in Mary's life. II. Review your Desires (vs. 38) a. The desire that Mary had to be near Jesus and learn of Jesus exceeded all other desires. Her chief desire was to be close to her Lord. In the scene before us we see the difference between good desires and greater desires. b. Duties are forcing you to ignore your desires c. Home i. Welcome d. Heart i. Wanted e. What is your chief desire in life? f. What is it that you want more than anything else? g. What is the great passion of your life? For some it is to do well in life. I would say that is a good desire. For some it is to have nice things in life. I would say that is a good desire and certainly the Bible does not condemn having nice things. But the desire that should exceed all other desires is to be close to the Lord and live at His feet. h. Judaism did forbid women to be instructed in the Torah i. It was unheard of for a rabbi to allow a woman to sit at his feet. @INTERSECTIONS PAGE 5

III. Resist the Distractions (vs. 40) a. Be discerning enough to know when your presence is needed and not your perspiration b. Self not service c. Resist ruining your service by overestimating it IV. Recommit to your Devotions (vs. 39) a. Get apart to keep from coming apart b. Priorities c. Good service with a bad attitude is bad service d. Refuse to allow the burden of something good to drag you away from something better e. Realize it’s possible to be busy but barren f. Being must always proceed doing g. No amount of service will make us spiritual h. Jesus never condemned Martha for what she was doing but rather for what she was not doing i. Remember we must first be ministered to before we minister for j. Jesus said Mary had chosen the ''good part.'' The word ''good'' speaks of that which is beneficial and profitable. Jesus was saying, ''Martha, what Mary is doing is for her spiritual benefit and profit.'' k. Jesus was helping Martha understand that worship is beneficial l. There are many who are serving God with a dull ax. Worship is the key to effective service. I often hear people say, ''I know I need to spend time in prayer, studying God's Word, spending time in His presence, but I am so busy.'' m. We often measure ourselves spiritually by how much we are doing. But if we don't worship, our work will be ineffective. CON'T. @INTERSECTIONS

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU? Volunteering as a Scout Leader is both fun and rewarding. It offers the opportunity to develop a range of skills and attributes which are transferable to the workplace, such as confidence, social skills, and teamwork. In addition, this is the opportunity to rediscover adventure, build bonds with other parents while your child makes new friends and get involved in the community. I strongly encourage you to take the time to think about how the current adult figures who play a huge role in your child's life will have some form of impact on it. Now think about how you can be a part of that journey and how your child will remember you being there. If this is something that you would be interested in doing, please contact me so that I can get you connected and started. You won't regret it! We are in need of Cub Scout Den Leaders and Girl Scout Troop Leaders! What is 988? Today, “988” is the three-digit, nationwide phone number to connect directly to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. By calling or texting 988, you’ll connect with mental health professionals with the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, formerly known as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Veterans can press “1” after dialing 988 to connect directly to the Veterans Crisis Lifeline which serves our nation’s Veterans, service members, National Guard and Reserve members, and those who support them. For texts, Veterans should continue to text the Veterans Crisis Lifeline short code: 838255. Too many people experience suicidal crisis or mental health-related distress without the support and care they need. There are urgent mental health realities driving the need for crisis service transformation across our country. In 2020 alone, the U.S. had one death by suicide about every 11 minutes—and for people aged 10-34 years, suicide is a leading cause of death. There is hope. The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is a national network of more than 200 crisis centers that helps thousands of people overcome crisis situations every day. These centers are supported by local and state sources as well as the Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The 988 Lifeline provides 24/7, confidential support to people in suicidal crisis or mental health-related distress. By calling or texting 988, you’ll connect to mental health professionals with the Lifeline network. To learn more about the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration's 988 resources and information to help spread the word, visit: https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/988. COUNSELING MINISTRY @INTERSECTIONS PAGE 12 988 Transition History: In a report to Congress in August 2019, Federal Communications Commission staff first proposed 988 as the nationwide, easy-to-remember, 3-digit dialing code for individuals in crisis to connect to suicide prevention and mental health crisis counselors with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. On July 16, 2020, the FCC adopted rules to establish 988 as the nationwide, easy-to-remember 3-digit dialing code for people in crisis to connect with suicide prevention and mental health crisis counselors. On October 17, 2020, the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act of 2020 was signed into law, incorporating 988 into statute as the new Lifeline and Veterans Crisis Line phone number. Recognizing the need to better support at-risk communities in crisis, including youth and individuals with disabilities, the FCC adopted additional rules in November 2021 to expand access to this critical service by establishing the ability to also text 988. As a result, covered phone service and text providers in the United States and the five major U.S. territories—American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands— were required to direct all 988 calls and texts to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by July 16, 2022. 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline

COUNSELING MINISTRY @INTERSECTIONS PAGE 13 As part of the two year nationwide transition to 988, more than 80 area codes had to shift to 10- digit dialing. To ensure that calls to 988 reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, all covered providers were required to implement 10-digit dialing in areas that both use sevendigit dialing and use 988 as the first three numbers in seven-digit phone numbers. On and after the July 16, 2022 implementation date, calls that begin with the digits 9-8-8, will be directed to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and cannot be dialed as part of a seven-digit phone number. If consumers accidently dial 988 as part of a local call, they must hang up and dial again using the area code and the seven-digit number. The North American Numbering Plan Administrator has a complete listing of affected area codes and resource materials for local government and community organizations. What is Good Friday and why do we call Good Friday “good” when it is such a dark and bleak event commemorating a day of suffering and death for Jesus? Good Friday, the Friday before Easter, is the Christian holy day to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus and His death at Calvary. It is also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, Great and Holy Friday, and Black Friday. "He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds, you have been healed." 1 Peter 2:24 For Christians, Good Friday is a crucial day of the year because it celebrates what we believe to be the most momentous weekend in the history of the world. Ever since Jesus died and was raised, Christians have proclaimed the cross and resurrection of Jesus to be the decisive turning point for all creation. Paul considered it to be “of first importance” that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and was raised to life on the third day, all in accordance with what God had promised all along in the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:3). On Good Friday we remember the day Jesus willingly suffered and died by crucifixion as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins (1 John 1:10). EASTER is a celebration of Christ's resurrection, Easter marks Christ's triumph over death and, as the Apostle Peter writes, our "new birth into a living hope." It's a time to reflect on salvation, redemption, and the future coming of Christ's kingdom. According to the New Testament, Jesus was arrested by the Roman authorities, essentially because he claimed to be the “Son of God,” although historians question this motive, with some saying that the Romans may have viewed him as a threat to the empire. He was sentenced to death by Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect in the province of Judea from 26 to 36 A.D. Jesus’ death by crucifixion, marked by the Christian holiday Good Friday (the Friday before Easter), and subsequent resurrection three days later is said, by the authors of the gospels, to prove that he was the living son of God. In varying ways, all four of the gospels in the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) state that those who believe in Jesus’ death and resurrection are given “the gift of eternal life,” meaning that those of faith will be welcomed into the “Kingdom of Heaven” upon their earthly death.
