CHAPTER 1: DESTINATION SELECTION PROCESS
1.1 INTRODUCTION
Community based tourism (CBT) is tourism in which local residents (often
rural, poor and economically marginalized) invite tourists to visit their communities
with the provision of overnight accommodation. The residents earn income as land
managers, entrepreneurs, service and produce providers and employees. For this
research Chini Lake has been choose to be a place for this research for CBT subject in
ecotourism. In CBT subject there is sub topic for CBT. This is the reason why
ecotourism become the main topic in this research. Tourism is a global industry with a
bearing on the lives of millions of people. Its potential as a tool for development is
enormous. With a growing interest to spend leisure time in nature and increasing
awareness of environmentalism, ecotourism has become one of the fastest-growing
segments of the tourism industry. Compared with mass or ‘old’ tourism, ecotourism is
touted as providing better sectorial linkages, reducing leakage of benefits out of the
country, creating local employment and fostering sustainable development. Thus, it
has been popularly promoted as a means of reconciling wildlife conservation with
economic development, particularly in developing countries. Ecotourism is
characteristic by its natural attractions, wildlife and wilderness habitats. Many
countries favour ecotourism as a form of economic development as it is perceived as a
low impact form of tourism. Ecotourism operations are generally small-scale, so are
relatively easy to set up. Carefully planned and operated ecotourism sites, especially if
it is village-based and includes local participation, is able to provide direct benefits
that might offset pressure from other less sustainable activities that make use of
natural and cultural resources.
5
1.2 BACKGROUND OF STUDY AREA
Pusat Penyelidikan Tasik Chini (PPTC) was established to promote research
activities based on biotic and abiotic aspects that belong to the diversity of flora and
fauna, water, soil and air. The lake is located in the Pekan district, about 100 km from
Kuantan Town, 40 km from Muadzam Shah Town and 70 km from Pekan town. The
lake has extensive natural habitats such as riparian forests, hutan paya air tawar, hill
forests and low dipterocarp forests. The Orang Asli of the Jakun tribe, use this lake as
their source of livelihood and water supply. The presence and complexity of the Chini
Lake ecosystem makes it an infinite asset in terms of aesthetics, heritage,
socioeconomics, ecotourism and ecological importance.
Kampung Baru Salong is located near Pekan, a town about 40 kilometers
from Kuantan and is near Lake Chini, Malaysia's second biggest natural freshwater
lake, with an area of 12.565 acres. The village is easily accessible by road. It is a new
settlement located about three kilometers from the Pahang River, the largest river in
the peninsula. Homestay Kampung Baru Sulong offers a variety of activities that
provide opportunities for visitors to enjoy a genuine Malay village.

CHAPTER 4: PROGRAM PLANNING AND DESIGN
4.1 TOURISM IMAGE FOR THE TASIK CHINI
Ecotourism at Chini Lake
Ecotourism is often perceived as an excellent tool for promoting sustainable
development in most of the protected and special areas, including the Biosphere
Reserve (BR). In fact, ecotourism can help to revive a declining tourist destination as
it preserves nature and support rehabilitation and most importantly, it fits well with
the Biosphere Reserve functions of conservation, development and logistics. This
article aims to analyse the life cycle of Tasik Chini as an ecotourism destination, by
23
focusing on the following aspects, namely travel engagement, ecotourism approaches
and revitalization initiatives. This study utilized a mixed method approach by
combining the primary and secondary data in tracing the evolution, development and
the existing stage of ecotourism. The study reveals that the four major components
which drive ecotourism program/initiatives toward achieving sustainable development
are the state of ecotourism in the BR, the targeted segments of the community, the
extent of community involvement as well as the supportive infrastructure for
ecotourism. As ecotourism in the BR significantly promotes learning and research,
smart partnership or collaboration between the stakeholders will help generate true
eco-tourists. It is therefore imperative that ecotourism initiatives in the context of the
BR is revitalised as it will enable a reflective analysis of the destination's life cycle.
The intervention of credible initiatives can fulfil the real and future roles of
ecotourism in sustainable development.
