Celebrating 60 years of serving in All Saints’ choir

Anne Walker celebrated her 60th year of singing with All Saints’ Church Choir on Sunday April 30th 2017

Anne in conversation with Veronica Barnes (Organist and Choir Mistress):

What role(s) do you have in All Saints’ Church?
I greatly enjoy singing in the choir each week and overseeing and helping arrange the church flowers. A Few years
ago I was licensed as a Lay Minister/Reader so I preach at, and lead, some of the services including funerals. I also
help in a variety of church activities such as the monthly parish lunch, services at our local residential home and
home communions.

How has music affected your life
Hugely! My father and grandmother were musical so I was encouraged to listen to music and to sing. During my
time at All Saints’ I have met several fine organists/choir directors who between them introduced me to a huge
variety of choral music which I still enjoy singing or listening to - everything from Messiah to
Taize chants and modern church songs. Also to secular music at parish entertainments!

Have you a special memory of the first Sunday you sang in the Choir at All Saints’?
It was a little scary because the choir was so large. I was kitted out in the smallest choir
robes and popped in the middle of the back row with the other choir girls. Juggling with
four sets of books, a hymn sheet and an unfamiliar service was a bit daunting. But sitting in
the large choir which sang so enthusiastically in four-part harmony, close to the organ, and
in the “middle of the action” was thrilling.
Was it usual to have girls in church choirs when you first sang here, or would you consider
yourself a pioneer?
Very few churches had choir girls but All Saints’ was one of the exceptions. The Revd. John Garrington admitted
senior girls and ladies shortly after he became vicar in the late 1940’s - so he was the real pioneer. However, the
age of joining for girls was reduced to eleven from fifteen when I was admitted and later it was reduced further.
Unlike the boys, girls were not paid on a monthly basis until 1964!

Do you have a favourite anthem or piece of music which you have sung? Faure Requiem

Do you have a favourite anecdote or incident you would like to share about your time here at All Saints’?
Many and various from the amusing and human to the more serious and what is best left unsaid! There was the
case of the bogus Vicar in 1960. He came to deputise for our Vicar who was away and conducted two weddings
whilst here. It later emerged that he was not ordained but was masquerading as a clergyman! It caused
enormous upset - especially to the two couples who had to be “re-married”! He ended up at the Old Bailey!
But on a very personal note, I had always wanted to sing in a cathedral choir - which was of course unheard of
when I was young - so the chance to sing Evensong with the choir in St Edmundsbury Cathedral as a girl was
particularly memorable.

What is your favourite hymn? I, the Lord of sea and sky. Lord of the dance.

Do you have a favourite Bible verse? Psalm 23, The Lord is My Shepherd

What one piece of music, one book (apart from The Bible) and one luxury would you take to a desert island?
African Sanctus; A set of detective stories; a box of baklava.

Tell us something about yourself which others may not know about.
As a child I adored climbing trees, later I enjoyed abseiling, and I still like exploring remote or off-beat locations.
I loathe housework!

Hampton Infant and Nursery School Visit All Saints’ Church

We had the pleasure of welcoming Hampton Infant and Nursery School to All Saints’ Church one morning in April.
As part of the Religious Education curriculum, the Year One classes visited Gareth and All Saints’ to learn about the
history of the church, what happens in a church and explore various areas of the church building.

Gareth began his talk asking the children what a church was, explaining that the church was the people rather than
the building. Gareth continued to tell the children what happens in a church., that joyous events like weddings,
baptisms and Christmas services take place, as well as sad events such as funerals.

The children heard about the history of All Saints’, which was built in 1908, and that the foundation stone was laid
by Queen Victoria’s daughter, Princess Christian.

The children had the chance to try on church robes worn during different services, ring the church bell and stroke
Libby, Gareth’s yellow Labrador. They also got to stand in the pulpit and see the artistic wall-hanging, the font used
for baptisms and the church foundation stone.

One of the pupils at Hampton Infants wrote a letter to Gareth about their trip to All Saints’:

“Thank you for letting us come to your church. I liked standing in the pulpit because it was very high up. I learnt
how important God is to us. I want to now know how many stories there are in the bible.”

Summer Craft: Sparkly Sun Catcher Butterfly

This pretty butterfly looks lovely up against the window, or hanging in the breeze .
You will need:

Bright coloured paper or card
Multi coloured glitter
Laminating pouch and laminator / contact paper (sticky backed plastic)
Green foam or card
Wiggly eyes

Instructions:
 Fold the paper in half, then cut out a butterfly wing shape. Cut another shape about an inch in so that you

have a frame when you unfold the butterfly.
 Lay the shape carefully in your laminating pouch or on the sticky side of your contact paper.
 Fill the centre of the butterfly with glitter. Carefully lay the top layer of the pouch over the butterfly and feed

through the laminator (supervised by an adult) . If you are using contact paper make sure you completely
cover the sticky bit with the other side .
 Cut around your butterfly.
 From green craft foam or card, cut a body for your butterfly and stick it on with glue or double sided tape. If
you are going to hang your butterfly up, you might want to sandwich a length of thread between the butter-
fly and the body before you glue them together. Add two wiggly eyes and put your butterfly out on display.

My name is Nina Airey and I teach yoga at All Saints’.

I trained to teach yoga in 2013 and teach part-time around

Summer Gardening by Bob Singers

This time round, I must start on a rather unsavoury subject which, if not dealt with, will devastate your garden:
SLUGS!

You have just completed the planting of borders, tubs and hanging baskets, the lawn is cut and neatly edged when
along comes Mr Slug and family. There are many different chemically-based remedies for this
problem sold in garden centres which work really well but there are also ‘The Grandfather
Methods’, of which the best-known are crushed eggshells, salt, sawdust and sand. All these have
been commonly used by gardeners to tackle slugs. Personally, I find crushed eggshells to be very
effective. Salt is very good but, beware, this might kill salt-intolerant plants. Whatever you choose
to use against slugs, once you have it in place you can sit back and enjoy the fruit of your labour – even treat
yourself to some well-earned refreshment – but don’t forget dead heading and watering have to be kept up in
order to maintain a constantly colourful garden.

If you decide to plant during the summer months, extra care must be taken. The soil must first have a generous
dressing of compost, vital to allow the root system to grow. Plants need to be fully hydrated before being planted
by placing the pot or tray in water until all the air bubbles cease to appear. Another method is “pudding-in”. This is
achieved by soaking the plant in half-strength liquid fertilizer and then by digging a hole, filling it with water and
waiting until the water has soaked away before planting.

I’m sure we’d all agree that the unglamorous jobs of getting rid of pests and doing maintenance work is essential if
we want our garden to thrive, but there are ways of making even a small garden stunning. One day last summer a
friend, Lynn, invited us around for tea and although her garden was rather on the small side – no more than 35ft x
12ft – I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. Now Lynn is your typical Car Boot Sale Warrior and, I must say, she
had certainly used her skills on her garden.

In the centre of her garden she had built a bird bath complete with a solar-powered water
fountain. Twisted tin-foil streamers hung from the overhanging trees, catching the sunlight as
they moved in the light breeze. A trellis had been erected; clematis and honeysuckle clambered
all over it and solar powered fairy lights nestled among them. A truly magical touch was achieved
using mirrors – courtesy of a car boot sale – placed strategically on certain parts of the fencing,
which had the effect of giving extra width and depth to the garden. Where space allowed, there
were pots filled with plants of every colour of the rainbow. The soundtrack was provided by wind
chimes tinkling soothingly and the chirping of numerous birds at the bird feeders. The overall
effect gave a mystical feeling to the garden as we later sat there watching a blood red sun
setting. Lynn had created a garden of true peace and tranquillity, confirming my belief that, with a little
imagination, wonders can be achieved even in a limited space and with a tiny budget.

Gardening lets us be at one with Mother Nature and that in itself is very rewarding but it can be equally rewarding
to sit back and just enjoy the scent and beauty your all-year-round effort has produced.
Enjoy Your Garden. You Deserve It.
