PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

Period 3
BALANCE
• A visual weight of the elements
composition
• There are 3 different types of balance
• Symmetry- both sides of the
composition are in the same position
• Asymmetry- one side of the
composition is not even or not mirroring
the other side of the composition
• Radial symmetry- each element is
equally spaced around a central point
SYMMETRICAL VS ASYMMETRICAL
BALANCE
RADIAL BALANCE
PROXIMITY
• The space or relationship between
elements and are visually
connected
PROXIMITY
ALIGNMENT
• Placing text and other design elements
on a page so they line up.
• Helps organize elements and create
visual connections
DIFFERENT TYPES OF ALIGNMENT
• Horizontal- left or right (or both!)
• Vertical- top and bottom
• Center- elements are aligned along
a central axis.
• Edge- lined up with each other’s
top, bottom, or side edges.
REPETITION
• reusing of the same or similar
• elements throughout the design
• Creates a feeling of consistency
REPETITION
CONTRAST
• Contrast allows you to emphasize
your shadows and highlights of your
element
• refers to the arrangement of
opposite elements
CONTRAST
SPACE
• The area that is left alone either
around, above, below your
composition
• Space can be negative or positive
NEGATIVE VS POSITIVE SPACE
• Main focus of a picture, • The background
