Dear Parents, and Caregivers

Welcome back to school for Term 2. It’s great to see all our children looking well rested and keen to learn. There
are a lot of things to look forward to this term including cross country, camp for Room Kakapo and the MovemProve
gymnastics programme for our Year 1&2 classes.

This Saturday is ANZAC Day, a very special day for New Zealand. There will be a service at the
Woodlands War Memorial at 8am on Saturday morning and the organisers hope to see a large
community turnout. The Memorial is looking splendid after its recent refurbishment. Here at school
our classes will be assembling white crosses around the garden edges to mark the occasion. They
have the names of fallen soldiers on them. The Ministry of Education has supplied this resource to
schools. On a personal level, I have strong family connections with World War 1 so I’ll be travelling
to attend an ANZAC service with my family. Like so many other families we lost someone killed in
action. My Grandfather, who did return, would never talk about his time in the battlefields, such
was the trauma he suffered.

Congratulations to our most recent winner of the Principal’s Award for Caring Sean
Irwin of Room Kakapo.

We are delighted to welcome three new students to our school community.
Katelyn Shaw has just turned five. Katelyn joins her brothers Michael and Blake at
school. Ethan and Jack Brock have come to us from Rimu School, along with their
parents Karen and Phil. Ethan is in Year 5 and Jack is in Year 2.

Room Kakapo has been selling Foodwrap as a fundraiser for school camp. We think there may be
some families from other classes who would like to order these. If you need long rolls of baking
paper, tin foil or plastic film wrap, please contact Nicky in the office by Friday 1st May.

Neil MacKay is an international expert on supporting children with learning difficulties,
especially dyslexia. He is coming to Invercargill in May and is running a parent evening
which may be of interest to some parents. Please see the notice in this newsletter for
details.

• Over the next four weeks classes will be training for the cross country each day. This means
they need to wear suitable shoes for running in - not gumboots.

• Please check that your child’s polar fleece uniform top is named. It has been very frustrating
when children lose their tops and we find out they are not named. There is a far greater
chance of getting something back if it has a name on it.

• Hopefully the winter bugs will stay out of our school as long as possible. The Well Child Service
newsletter attached has some really helpful advice.

• Please pay your Term 1 accounts. Thank you to the families who have already done this.

• School closes at 12.30 on Monday 4th May. Buses will run 2 ½ hours early.

Have an enjoyable autumn 3 day weekend. Remember school is closed on Monday 27th April.

Regards

Fiona

School banking is done every Tuesday morning through
ANZ Bank. If you would like an
application form for an ANZ Bank
account for your child/ren, ring the

bank on 0800 269 296.

Parents, please let the school know when your child is absent.
When a child is not at school, and we don’t know why, Nicky has
to spend quite a bit of time ringing parents. This is a “must do”
for the safety of your children. If ringing the school is not always
the easiest option, you can email [email protected] or
text us on 027 758 1503.
