NADAMANTHANA :
INDIAN MUSIC THERAPY
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bangalore, and Meera Center for Music
Therapy Education and Research (Manollasini Trust) will present
a conference, Nadamanthana, The Science behind Indian Music Therapy
on December 6 and 7, 2019, at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bengaluru
(from 9am to 5pm).
Dr. Meenakshi Ravi, who is trained in Carnatic music, and a psycho-
social consultant, will present a paper on using Carnatic music as a
therapeutic intervention for children with special needs. She explains in
a nutshell what music therapy is.
Dr. Shanthala Hegde, Neuropsychologist from NIMHANS, who
works at the NIMHANS lab to understand the scientific efficacy and
neurological impact of music therapy will speak on her work in this area.
Dr. Vinod Ingalhalikar, a Hindustani musician and an orthopaedic
surgeon from Mumbai, guides music therapy at a hospital in Mumbai,
and will throw light on his area of work.
Dr. Vinoo Alluri, Assistant Professor of Neurocognitive science at
IIIT, Hyderabad, will present a paper on how to integrate neurocognitive
science with technology.
Dr. Kirthana Kunikullaya, Neurophysiologist at M. S. Ramaiah
Medical College, will speak of the effect of music therapy on physiology.
Dr. Geetha Shivamurthy, gynaecologist and Medical Superintendent,
Vani Vilas Hospital, Bangalore, will speak on controlling hypertension
during pregnancy using music therapy.
Vidhushi Rajam Shankar, senior music therapist from Hyderabad,
will present a paper on how ragas can heal and how the saptaswaras
can heal individuals with special needs.

Dr.Sowmya Sanak and Sanak Kumar Athreya, young music
therapists, will speak on their work in the field.
Poorva Sampath, a student of Dr.Meenakshi Ravi, and a graduate
from Berkeley College of Music,Boston, will present a paper on how
to apply Western techniques to Indian music for music therapy. She is
also an NMP or a neuro music therapy practitioner.
Further, Dr. Anil Gautham, an orthopaedic surgeon from Coimbatore,
and also a veena player, has worked on pre- and post-operative patients
using music therapy and will elaborate on this area of his work.
A highlight of the conference will be the success stories of
N. G. Ravi who uses rhythm therapy for children with special needs.
Befittingly, Dr. R. Gangadhar, Director of NIMHANS, will inaugurate
the event.
According to Dr. Meenakshi Ravi, four books on music therapy will be
released at the conference. The expected outcome of the conference is
to arrive at a common syllabus in music therapy to train those interested.
