Jamaicansarealwayslisteningordancingtomusic.Evenifjustwhispsarecaughtasabusblazesby,wefind
ourselvestappingourfeetandnoddingourheads.MusicisthelifelineofJamaicans.
Sadly,formanyofus,especiallyouryouthswhoneedsomuchguidance,“music”isacrazycacaphonythat
isoftenaccompaniedbywordsthatareeitherunintelligibleorindecentorthatteachustokillanddestroy.
Anditbeingourlifeline,welivewhatwelisten.andthecyclecontinues.

Itisoftensaidthatforonetomoveforwardandbuildthefuture,onehastodraw from thepast.
Jamaica’smusicalhistoryisonethatissorich,sovibrantandsoeducationalthatoneshouldmakeevery
efforttolearnaboutit.
True,theworldthinksof“Jamaica-Reggae-BobMarley”asoneword,buttherewasmore-longbefore.
Therewerethosewhotoiledagainstobstaclesand“society”and“fight‘ghense”tosetthefoundationfor
authenticJamaicanmusicandthesetalentedandmightywarriorsshouldneverbeforgotten.

St.Thomas,aparishlocatedintheeastofJamaica,istheonlyonewhichhasamajorriverthatflowstowards
theeast.Againstallodds.
Inthe1920s-beforeoneevenimaginedbothWorldWars-ababyboywasborninthissameparish;a
spiritedbabyboywhogrew tobeanunforgettablemanwho,likethePlantainGardenRiver,wentagainst
allodds,defying“whatwasexpected”tounequivocallycontributetoJamaica’shistoryandheritage.
HewasnamedOswaldWilliams;hecalledhimself“Ossie”,precededbythetitleofnobility“Count”.
Maybehedidforeseehisgreatness...

Despitetheirawesometalentand majesticmusic,CountOssieand the

MysticRevelationofRastafarigroupfoundthisoutthehardway,asthey

werespawnedbythewidersocietybecauseoftheirbeliefsandwayoflife.

Andtheydidn’tevenhavedreadlocks!

‘AccordingtothebookTheFirstRastabyHélèneLee,becauseoftheirRasta-

farianbeliefsCountOssieandhisteam wereviolentlyrejectedfrom the

thenanti-Rastamusicestablishmentand outlawed,asmostRastafarians

were.Itwasnotuntilaround1959,whensuccessfuldancerMarguerita

Mahfood,aJamaicanrumbadancerofHondurandescentwhoenjoyed

theirnew styleandlikedtodancetoit,demandedthatCountOssieandhis

groupbepartofhermajorWardTheatershow.VereJohnJr.alsoresisted

atfirstbutatMahfood'sinsistencehadnootherchoicebuttohavethem on

hisOpportunityHourshow attheCaribtheater.Bothshowsweresuccessful

andopenednew doorstoCountOssieandtheWareikasrightaway’.

Andevenaftertheyovercameadversitytorisetothetopsomanyyears

ago,theirlegacy-livingonthroughsonSamuel“Time”Williams,Putus

Rootsandremaininggroupmembers-wasthesubjectofatragicincident

inJuly2014.

‘DRUMS(originalonesusedbyCountOssie)andotherhistoricalarte-

factsusedinthebirthofJamaica'spopularmusicweredestroyedinafire

atRockfortinEastKingston...

Thedrumsand otherpercussion instrumentsbelonged to theMystic

RevelationofRastafari,thegroupofdrummersfoundedbyCountOssie

andwhichplayedontheinternationallyrenownedhitOhCaroDliWna,the
infectiousskanumberrecordedbytheFolkesBrothersin1958.

Skawastheforerunnertotherocksteady,reggae,rockersanddancehall

genresandwasthefirsttobringtheuniquesoundofJamaica'spopular

culturetotheworldstage’.
Today,Putus,longstandingmemberoftheMRR,proudlypresidesoverthenon-profitfoundationUnitedFor

havingjoinedforceswiththe from southofFrance.

Together,theyarehelpingtobuildJamaicabyrenovatingRockfort-physicallyconstructingfacilitiesto
includelodgingforvolunteers,amulti-activitycentreandacomputerroom -whileencouragingpositive
minds.Togetherwiththehelpofcommunitymembersandvolunteerswhostillbelievethatthereisgood-
evenwhenonehasbeenrejectedbythemass-theyarepryingawaythefingersofcrimeanddelinquency
withthehopeofbringingbackthecommunitytodaysofgloryandgoodrepute.Together,theyarefighting
togiveespeciallytheyouthsofacommunityviewedasviolentandonetobeavoidedandlookeddownon,
achanceatwhatlifecouldbe.Andthatisnotall.UsingRockfortasthefulcrum,theyarereachingtheworld
viamusicandothereducationaloutreachevents,inclusiveofvisitingschoolstointeractwithstudents.
ThelaudablelegacythatbeganwithCountOssie,thathelpedto“putJamaicaonthemap”,now liveson
through“Time”-alsomemberoftheUFJFoundation,“PutusRoots”andfriends.Onelove!

partoftheirlifecycle.Itcanalsoberegularlyfloodedwithfresh,brackishorsaltywater.
Didyouknow thatthereareapproximately16majorwetlandsofgreatimportanceinJamaica,
withmostbeingfoundonourcoast?
Therearefivetypesofwetlandsthatexistintheworld.
Didyouknow thatourislandJamaicahasfourofthefivetypeshere!
ThefourinJamaicaaremarine(foundatcoastallagoons,rockyshores,coralreefs),riverine(along
riversandstreams),estuarine(formedbydeltas,tidalmarshes,mangroveswamps)andpalustrine
(formedbymarshes,swampsandbogs).
OneofthemostcommontypesofwetlandinJamaicaisthemangrovewetlandwhichisfound

TheNaturalHistoryMuseum ofJamaica(NHMJ)celebratesWorldWetlandsDayeveryyearwith
anOpenDayattheMasonRiverProtectedAreaSiteinClarendoninFebruary.

For2019,WorldWetlandsDaywillbecelebratedwiththetheme“WetlandsandClimateChange”
whichemphasizeshow healthywetlandscanhelpustocopewithextremeweatherconditionsin
ourenvironment.
NHMJcommemoratestheeventwithanOpenDayattheMasonRiverProtected areaon
Wednesday,February6th,2019from 10:00a.m.to3:00p.m.

TheMRPA,managedbytheNHMJ,wasdesignatedaRamsar
site in December 2011 and is known as a wetland of
internationalimportance.
ItisaveryspecialtypeofwetlandinJamaica,asitisouronly
inlandpeatbog(apalustrinewetland),containingmanyplants
andanimalsthatareuniquetothatarea.

Himbaareactuallydescendantsofagroupof Herero herderswhofledintotheremotenorth-west
afterbeendisplacedbytheNama.TheHimbahaveclungtotheirtraditionsandthebeautifulHimba
womenarenotedfortheirintricatehairstyleswhichandtraditionaljewellery.
AsHimbamenandwomanwearfewclothesapartfromaloinclothorgoatskinnedmini-skirt,they
rubtheirbodieswithredochreandfattoprotectthemselvesfromthesunandalsogivestheir
