byearthquake.ThisistheoldestbuildingtobefoundinBuffBay.

Plum Valley,Portland.
The21stdayofJuneofitselfisaveryspecialday:called
thesummersolstice,itisthelongestdayoftheyear
when thesun seemsto stand stilland in Franceand
manyothercountries,therearemusicfestivalswhich
markthebeginningofthesummerseason.

Awomanwholovesnature,peaceandserenity,shemigratedfrom herhomecommunityofPlum Valleyin
Portlandattheageof15andhassincesettledinCastleton,forwhichshedeclaresunendinglove.Ms.Dor
‘getsalongwitheveryone’andenenthoughsheis‘alwaysbusy’sheneverhesitatestomakethetimetohelp
others,nomatterwhattheproblem mightbe.Alwaysgiving,shelivesbybelievingthatintrustingGod,one
willbecarriedthrougheverythingandencouragesotherstoseekJesusbeforeitbecomestoolate.

ShehadformaleducationattheCharlesTownPrimarySchoolinPortland(neartoBuffBay)butLifeitself
hasbeenhergreatestteacher,givingherunparralleledskillsviaexperiences.

gingerbeer(home-madeofcourse)andherpreferedcoloursareredandmintgreen.
Thoughawomanofsmallstature,asthebiologicalmotheroffourchildrenwhohavegivenhereightgrand-
children,shestandstallwithpride.Herpersonalityandcharacterhelpedtopushherchildrenandgrandchil-
drentoheightssheherselfhaveneverbeento.Twoofherchildrenresideoverseasandhergrandchildren
exceltosuchahighdegreeintheirstudiesthattheyallhavebeenacceptedintohighlyprestigiousinstitutions
andaremovingontoprofessionssomeoncethoughtcouldonlybeattainedby‘richuptownpeople’.
Justgoestoshow thatalovinghomeinwhichthereisstrongguidancecoupledwithdeterminationto
succeed,towantgreaterisallthatittakes.One’slimitliesonlyinone’smind.Oncethisfearisremoved(or
notatallinstilled)thentheworldisopenforthetakingandallbecomespossible.

AcustomarydayforthecelebrationoffatherhoodinCatholicEurope,itisknowntodatebacktoat
leasttheMiddleAgesbutthoughitwasbroughtbytheSpanishandPortuguesetoLatinAmerica,it
didn’tbecomeahugemovementintheAmericasuntilduringthe20thcenturywhenonewoman
pushedtohaveaspecialdayfordads.

“Father'sDayofficiallybegan in 1910 in Spokane,Washington,where27-year-old SonoraDodd
proposeditasawaytohonorthemanwhoraisedherwhenhermom diedinchildbirth.Doddwas
atachurchservicethinkingabouthow gratefulshewasforherfatherwhenshehadtheideafor
Father'sDay,whichwouldmirrorMother'sDaybutbecelebratedinJune-herdad'sbirthdaymonth.

Biodiversityandnaturalresourcessuchaswater,wood,andmineralsareimportantinbuildingupthecountry’seconomy.Agboraw

andJones(2017)1statesthatnaturalresourcesincreaseacountry’swellbeinganditseconomicgrowth.Throughthesustainable

accessandutilizationofournaturalresources,morejobswouldbecreated;manufacturingandstandardoflivingwouldincrease,

withapositiveinfluenceonthefinancialsector.Thisthereforemeansthatanincreaseincareforthecountry’snaturalresources

wouldresultinpositivesocial,environmental,andeconomicoutcomes.

Whathappenswhenwedonotlivesustainably?

Onthecontrary,pollutionandenvironmentallyunsustainablechoiceswouldcausenaturalresourcestobedepleted(Higgins2013)2.

Eachtimewelitter,over-exploitresources,clearlandswithoutreplantingtrees,orclearlandswithoutnotingthepresenceofspecies,

inthenameofmakingmoremoney,leavesfewerresourcestobeavailableforthefuture.Theironyisthatourprofitsbecomeshort-

lived.

Whataresomesolutions?

Wecanchoosesustainablewaysofliving!Findingalternativeresourcesforusewhilecertainresourcesarebeingreplenishedisreal

sustainability.Inpractisingcommunitysustainability,wecanstartoffbysimplytakingcareofourownspacessuchasourhomes,

schoolsandofficespaces.Wedothisbyensuringthatthereisproperdisposalofgarbage,intentionalplantingofmoretrees,commit-

menttorecyclingandeducationontheenvironment.Iftheseactionsarenotalreadybeingtaken,thenit’snottoolatetostartnow.

Furtherpromotionofenvironmentalstewardshipininstitutionssuchasschools,churchesandcorporationsisapositivewayof

gettingourcountryinthedirectionitneedstogo.

InGhana,cropyieldswerereduced,theproductivitydecreasedrapidlyandthereweremanywatershortagesasaresultofclearing

land,soilerosionandover-exploitation.TheCostofenvironmentalDegradation(CoeD)inGhanawasatenthoftheGrossDomestic

Product(GDP)andahalfoftheOfficialDevelopmentAssistance(Fredua2014)3.Thereforewhenenvironmentaldegradation

increases,moremoneywillbeneededtofixtheproblemscreated.Thiswouldthenleavelessmoneyforthecountrytogrow eco-

nomically.

In2014,itwasadmittedthatthemultiplewatershortagesinJamaicawasduetothemismanagementofwaterandtheineffective

storage,collectionanddistributionofit(JamaicaObserver2014)4.Withapproximatelyten(10)hydrologicalbasinsandtwenty-six

(26)watershedmanagementunits,Jamaicashouldhavesufficientwatertolastthroughoutthedryseasonswithoutcreatingmuch

problem.However,ourpoorsustainabilityhabitshavebeencostingusimportantdevelopmentalstridesforourcountry‘landof

woodandwater’!

WillJamaicalearnherlesson?

Intryingtogrow Jamaica’seconomy,don’tignoretheenvironment.Wenow know thattheenvironmentcanreapbenefitsdepend-

ingonhow wellwetakecareofit.Letuschallengemoreofouryouths,colleagues,churchcommunitiesandourcountry’sleaders

topromoteenvironmentalsustainability.Let’sbuildourbusinesses,craftourlawsanddevelopourorganizationsonthefoundation

ofasustainableenvironmentwhichwillguaranteeapositiveoutcome.Evenifyourpassionisnotspecificallytheenvironment,the

prospectsofabetterJamaicashouldbeenoughtofueleachperson’sdesiretocareforitsresources.Ittakesworkandacombined

efforttogetthecountrytotheplacewedesire.Letusmaketheeffort!

Yetdespitethefactthatthebusesareabletohandletheroad,wehaveyettoseegreaterinterestfromthe

Wedoappreciatethe52andthe54busesbutforustheygoasfarasTempleHallandthenweareleftat
themercyoftherobottaxis.Manyoverloadtoearnasmuchaspossiblefromeachtripwhilesomecharge
fullfareforlittlechildren.
TheJunctionroutebeyondTempleHallhasmanypopulatedcommunitieswithagreaterratioofpassen-
gerstotransportation.A greatproportionofthesepeopleworks,studiesorshopsinthecorporatearea.
Castletonisabuiltupcommunitywhichhasapolicestation,clinic,farmstore,shops,communitycentre
whichhostsmanyactivities.IT alsohasaworldrenowedpublicgardenswhichisactuallyatouristhotspot.

O urquestionisthis:
WhydowenothaveabusgoingasfarasGrandyHoleorevenjusttoCastletonBotanicalGardens?

ThiswouldgreatlybenefitboththeJUTC aswellascommutersandinaddition,wearecertainthatthe
CastletonBotanicalGardenswouldseeanincreaseinitsnumberofvisitors,whichinturnwouldhavea
positiveimpactonbusinessesinthearea.
Evenifthe52or54routecouldbeextendedtoserveus2or3timesperdayuntilthereisaregularbusfor
us,we-especiallytheelderlyandthosetravelingwithyoungchildren-wewouldbequitegrateful.

Inthehealthand wellnessworld,“mind-bodyconnection”hasbecomesomethingofa
buzzword.ButinChinesemedicine,understandingtherelationshipbetweenpsychologyand
physiologyisancient-nottrendy.

Mary“Cissy”Majebe,presidentofDaoistTraditionsCollegeofChineseMedicalArtsin
Montford,putsitthisway:
“From aChinesemedicineperspective,there’sreallynotevenadistinctionbetweenthemind
andthebody.Weareanintegratedwholeemotionally,spirituallyandphysically.”

Forinstance,eachorgan,explainsMajebe,hasaconnectiontoaspecificemotion.Thelungs,
shesays,areaprimeexample.“Ifwelookatwhathappenswhenapersongetsreally,really
sad,oneofthethingsthatapersonwilltalkaboutisastiflingfeelinginthechest.Itfeelslike
thereisaweightonthechest,andit’sreallyhardtotakeadeepbreath,”sheexplains.
“Well,theChinesesaw this,andfrom ourperspective,thelungsareassociatedwiththe
emotionofgrief.”Thekidneys,shesays,areassociatedwithshockandfear.“Everybodyhas
heard:‘IwassoscaredIalmostpeedmypants,’”shesays.“InChinesemedicine,fearandshock

ofthefinalGSATexaminationmarkedtheendofanexperienced-filledsixyearsattheprimary
level.
Eachone,withorwithouttheresultshopedfor,wouldbemovingontoasecondarylevel
institution;thebeginningofanew chapter,ofanew life.

Congratulationstoall;hopeyoubuildonthefoundationprovidedatyourprimary/prep
schoolandmakethemostoftheopportunitiesthatcomeyourway.
Pleasenotethatoneisnotdefinedbythegradesofanexam,sothosewhohavebeendisap-

tionstosecondarylevelones.
Andsomeparents,insteadoflovinglyguidingchildrenandhelpingthem tofocusoneducation
andpersonaldevelopment,hurrytointroduceadulthairstylesandclothing,causingthechild
to’feelbig’.Andthentheylabelthechildrenas‘forceripe’andcomplainthatlessonsarenot
givenenoughattention.

Inthismomentofelation,ofbewilderment,ofquestioning,oftryingtofitinsomewhere...In
thismomentwhentheyaresoveryvulnerabletopeerpressure,how areweprotectingand
guidingour‘tweenstoteens?
