ProtectedAreaSiteinClarendoninFebruary.For2018,WorldWetlandsDaywascelebratedwiththetheme“WetlandsforaSus-
tainableUrbanFuture:UrbanWetlandsMakeCitiesLiveable”whichemphasizedhow wetlandsenableahealthyurbanenvironment
throughwhichwecanlive,work,raisefamiliesanddobusiness.NHMJincollaborationwiththeNationalWorksAgency(NWA),
theForestryDepartment,theUrbanDevelopmentCorporation(UDC),NationalEnvironmentandPlanningAgency(NEPA)and
KleenKoncepts,WaterCompanycommemoratedtheeventwithanOpenDayattheMasonRiverProtectedareaonWednesday,
February7th,2017from 10:00a.m.to3p.m.TheDaywasfilledwithtours,displays,games,prizesandsurprises.Wearealsograte-

horriblyabusedbythoseIlovedandtrustedthemost.Bythosewhosedutyitwastoloveandprotectme.
Theverypersonwhobrougtmeintothisworldcreatedpossibilitiesforthingstohappentome,allowedthemtohappenandturnedablindeye,
goingasfaraschokingmeandcallingmeungrateful,whenIaskedhertosaveme...
Itismyhopethatinsharingthistestimonial,Iwillsaveatleastonelife:frompsychologicalproblems;fromsuicide;frommurder.
Ineverwasachild.Nevergotthechancetobe.Isawtoomanyadultthingsatwhatshouldhavebeenmyhomeatatooearlyage,asaresultof
sharingbedwithmymotherandher‘friends’.

installedhimself.IamnotsureifIwasawareofhavinganotherolderbrotherbuttherewasone.HecametolivewithuswhenIwas7yearsold;
hewas16.Momgavehimabedinthelivingroom,graduatedmefromherbedandputmetosleepwithhim.
Idonotknowifitwasthataswewerestrangershewasneverabletoseemeasalittlesisterorthathewasjustplainsick-forthenext2years,
Iwasmybrothersgirlfriend.Shortofpenetratingmewithhisorgan,everythingamandoestohiswifewasdonetome.Everything.
HethreatenedmeintosilenceandsoIkeptajournalhopingthatmymotherwouldfindit.Hedidbeforeshedidandhetoreittoshreds.
WhenIturned10,momdecidedtogetmarriedtooneofher‘friends’whohadbecomearegularvisitor.MylittlesisterandIwouldmovetolive
withtheminanewtown.Finallysomegoodnews!Iwouldbeescapingthefangsofmybrother!
Shortlyafterrelocating,herhusbandstartedshowinghistruecolours.Hewouldgetdrunkandcomehometohurlexpletivesandbeatmymother
withthebroom,themachete-justanything-untilherfairskinwasallblueandpurple.Shecalledthepoliceattimesbuttheyonlycametosay
oneshouldcalmdown.Worsethanallthisthoughwasthefactthatwhenshewenttohaveherbath,hewouldholdandfondlemeandwarnme
tonotsayanythingtoher.Livingineternalfearofhisanger,hisbattering,Ikeptsilent.UntilonedayIcouldnomore.Tohaveescapedthehands
ofmybrotherforthis!Nomore!
Iconfidedinmymotherandshelookedmeintheeyeandcalledmealiar,saidIwantedtoruinherrelationship.Thenonedayinanefforttoget

Mybelongings-textbooks,uniform,anythingthathecameaholdof-wouldbethrownoutintotheunforgivingreddirt.Thelightswereturned
offonmeatnightswhenIwasdoinghomeworkortryingtostudy.Iwasn’tallowedtowatchtvin‘hishouse’.Manydaysandnightsweallhad
tocareenoffthehillandintothebushesasstoneswerehurledatus.Sometimeswewereaccommodatedbyaneighbour;manytimesweslept
underthehouseinwhatoldpeoplecallacellar.Thehardenedcoldreddirt,litteredwithgoatandchickendroppingsgreetedusthosenights,as
thefreezingmountainairstretcheditswitheredfingerstoclawatus.
Ofcourse,nextmorningIhadschoolwithanice3milewalkbothmorningandafternoon-andwasexpectedtobeatthetopoftheclass.

Differentapproachesmustbetakenwithboysandgirlsenteringpubertyandevenso,onestill
needstotakeintoaccountindividualpersonalities.Itmustbeconstantlykeptinmindthatthis
isatryingperiodforthem astheyarenow beingbombardedwithnumerousemotionaland
physiologicalchangesthattheyareuncertainhow todealwith.
Bothboysandgirlsundergoagrowthspurtwhichisinstigatedbyhormones(chemicalsmade
byorganscalledglands).Thepituitarygland-foundatthebaseofthebrain-makesthe
humangrowthhormonewhile(inmales)itpromptsthetesticlestomaketestosterone.
Pubertymeanschange,development.Boysarebecoming“men”.
Skincangetoily,hairbeginstogrow onface,chest,legs,arms,underarmsaswellasinthe
pubicarea.Itisnormalforbreastsinmalestoswellandhurtbutthisstopswhenpubertyends.
Asonegetstaller,chestandshouldersbroaden;perspirationincreases,voicedeepens.
Otherchangesthatareuniquetomalesconcernthematuringofthemalereproductivesystem
whichismadeupofthepenis,bladder,testicles,prostate,urethraandthetubesthatconnect
these,transportingfluids.
Thepenis’shapeandsizeisahugeconcernformanyboyswhofeelcondemnedifitisn’t‘just
right’.Theteethofindividualsdifferinshapeandsize,makingeachsmileunique;welljustso,
onemustacceptthatitisnormalforpenissizeandshapetobedifferent.
Inadditiontoallthestunningchanges,boys(andparents)now havetogetusedtotheidea
of‘erections’(thepenisbecomeslargerandstifferwhenthemaleissexuallyarousedorforno
reasonatall!)and‘wetdreams’(erectionandejaculationwhilesleeping).
Thebasicfunctionofthemalereproductivesystem istoproducesperm andorgansarecreated
tofacilitatetheprocessofreproduction.Thisiswhythepenisishighlysensitivetomentalor
physicalstimulationandgetserecttobeabletoshootthespermsascloseaspossibletothe
femalecounterpart.
Beingabletohaveanerectionandejaculatedoesnotmeanthatoneisreadytohavesexual
relations,despitethe‘pleasantfeelings’thatmayariseiforwhenonetouchesthegenitalarea
(masturbation).Oneisevenlessreadyto‘father’achild.
Becomingfullymaturetakestimeandisnotaprocessthatcanberushed.Donotallow your-
selftofeelpressuredtodoanythingtobeableto‘fitin’or‘standout’.Slow down,takethe
timetolearnaboutandenjoythechangesinyourbody.Makethemostofyourchildhood.
