Whateverthesource,thechoiceswerebasicallythesame:brightlycolouredpacketsofairthathad
beenheavilyflavouredwithsalt,colouring,naturalflavoursthatwereintentionallynotnamed,oiland
ofcourse,MSG.NottoforgettheHighFructoseCornSyrup.
Afewmomentslaterwithfingersbrightlycolouredtomatchthesnackonehadindulgedin,symptoms
hadtobeurgentlytreatedwithbeverageswhichhadevenmorecolouring,acidandartificialsweetners.

Themaskedboobyisalargeseabirdoftheboobyfamily.Itisaboutthree(3)feetinlengthandhasawingspanof

uptofive(5)feet.Ithasawhitebodywithbrownish-blackwings,atailandgreywebbedfeet.Itbearsablack“mask”

arounditseyeswhichsurroundsitslong,pointed,orange-yellow bill.

WherearetheMaskedBoobiesfound?
TheMaskedBoobiesnestinlargecolonies,locatedontropicalislandsintheCaribbeanandacrosstheAtlantic,Pacific
andIndianOceans.TheyinhabittheMorantandPedroCaysofthecoastofJamaica.

How dotheycaretheiryoung?
Thefemalelaysoneortwoeggsbutusuallyonlyonewillhatch.Bothparentstaketurnsstandingonthenest,covering
theeggswiththeirwebbedfeettokeepthem warm.Theyaggressivelyprotectthenestduringthisperiod.Inspiteof
this,vastquantitiesofboobyeggsweregatheredfrom theMaskedBoobyaswellasthoseofotherseabirdssuchasthe
BridledTern(Sternaanaethetus),theSootyTern(Sternafuscata)andtheNoddy(Anousstolidus).

WhatwastheImportanceoftheMaskedBoobyinthe1800s?
Asearlyasthe1800s,ithasbeendocumentedthatmanyoftheBobbyeggsweresoldbythethousandsinmarkets
acrossJamaica.OnthestreetsofKingstontheycouldbepurchasedhardboiled,withalittlesaltandpepper,orraw
forimmediateconsumption.Theywerecovetedasbothapopularbreakfastitem andaningredientinaspecialpunch
widelythoughttoincreasemalestamina.

Inordertopreventthedecimationofboobybirdpopulations,itbecameillegaltoharvestthesebirdeggs.
