Indayslonggoneby,hardwork,familyvaluesandhappinessweregreatlyvalued.Longbeforetherewas
“technology”asweknowit,morepeoplelivedhealthilytoaripeoldageandcrimewaspracticallynon
existent.
HereintheJunction,therewasathrivingandprosperouscommunitycalledChesterfield.Ithaditsown
shops,schoolandchurches.Andeventhoughtherewasnoelectricityorpavedroads,lifewasgood.
Abandcametothesquaretoregalewithitsinstrumentsonspecialoccasionsandsugarandliqourwere
madeinthecommunitysoonewasalwaysmerry.
Theinhabitantstherereliedmostlyonfarming-producingawidevarietyofcrops.Sugarcanewassent
downtothefactoryatGraysInn,AnnottoBayandeveryotherweek,threeorfourtruck-loadsof
bananaswerecollected.HighergradebananasweretakentoAnnottoBayWharf(PortAntoniowhen
operationsceasedinAnnottoBay),tobeshippedtoEnglandandtherestsenttoKingstontobesold
locally.HugecoffeefarmsflourishedunderthecareoftheBaxtersandevenbambooshootsweresoldto
Asianrestaurants.
Yes,lifewasindeedgood,butitcouldhavebeengreat-andsustained-hadtherebeenroadsandabridge
foronetohaveeasierandsaferaccesstotheoutsideworld.
Afterdescendingwhatwasforsomemilesfrom thehillsofChesterfield(andWilliamsfieldfurtherup
andbehind),onehadtocontendwiththecrossingoftheriver,especiallyduringrainyseasonwhenit
becameverydangerous.TraversingviathebridgeattheCastletonsquarewasnosolutionofitself,as
thereremainedtwospringsthatbecamedangerousentitiesafterheavyrainfallandtherewerenobridges
forthem.Also,thisrouteledonemilesoutoftheway,overhillsandthroughmuddypaths.Asolution
wasneeded,butformanylongyears,nonecame.

Mr.StanleyEdwards(left),Mr.CliftonNugent(right)andMr.RuddyHowell,
justlikeMr.GeorgeGranthadglisteningeyesastheyspokeofapastlong
forgottenbymany,butsopreciouslyheldintheirhearts.Theyspokeoftheir
belovedcommunityofChesterfield,wherebothmenandwomenfarmedand
qualityoflifewasgood.Theyspokeoftheirwonderfulteachers(twoofwhom
wereMrs.MercellaMallettandMrs.Bogle)whostoodproudinthelittle
schoolroom builtofstonethatalsoservedaschurchonSundays.
Ahandwavedinthedirectionoftheacresandacresofbamboothathavenow
takenoverthehills.Bamboothatwasoriginallyboughttoserveonlyas‘sticks’
forthemanyacresofyam farmsthatexistnomore.Themanytreesgrownfor
lumberhavealsodisappeared.

October5-7,1963,hurricaneFlorahitJamaicaandleveledsugarcaneplantations,bananafieldsand
causedwide-spreadflooding,neverbeforeseenontheisland.ThepeopleofChesterfieldwatchedthe
WagWaterriverriseuptothelevelofthemainroad,takingeverythingthatitcamenearto:citrus,
chocolateandcoconuttressweresweptaway,aswellastheoriginalbridgeatGrandyHole.
ThewallalongtheroadwasrebuiltbyMr.LesHartbutthebridgethatwouldagainconnectthem tothe
road(landtheyusedtowalkonwaswashedaway)keptbeingpromisedyearafteryear.

Indayslonggoneby,thepeopleofChesterfieldwouldgatherrocksby
theWagWaterriverforthebuildingofroads.Theywouldsitandcrack
oneaftertheother,someworkingbythelightofthemoonafterdoing
otherdutiesduringtheday.Therockswouldthenbepackedintoboxes
andpricesagreedonbasedonthesizeofthebox.Withbetterroads
cameincreasedmobilityandgreaterpossibilitytoreachotherswith
theirgoods.Still,regularlytransportingtheloadsfrom Chesterfield
acrosstheriverandtotheroadbecameburdensomeformany,espe-
ciallyafterlongharddaysatthefarm,andsogradually,thecommunity
incheddownhill,closerandclosertotheroadandthenacrosstheriver.

WithmigrationtoEnglandortoCubatoworkincanefieldsoreventoPanamatohelpbuildthecanal
aswellasfurtherdownhill,soon,veryfewremainedinthehillsofChesterfield;wattleanddaubhouses
crumbled,thechurchwhichdoubledasaschoolduringtheweekbecameabandonedandtrailsbecame
overgrownandblocked.

Whiledevelopmenttookplaceinsurroundingareas,apavedroadwasofferedtotheChesterfieldcom-
munity.Thiswasrefusedonthebasisthatitwouldgivecriminalseasieraccess.Intheend,theverysame
communitymembersandtheiroffspringsufferedfrom thischoice.Thisdecisionslowedandeventually
broughttoahaltthedevelopmentofthecommunity,forcingmoreandmorepeopletomovedownand
away,closertoopportunities.
Chesterfield,thoughnow justafractionofwhatitusedtobeandseeminglysmallespeciallywhen
viewedfrom theJunctionroute,stillfightsonandavisit‘acrosstheriver’exposedabeautifulcommu-
nitywithshopsandlotsofplayspaceinyards.
Theplightofthiscommunity,especiallyinrainytimeswhentheWagrages,hasbeenrepeatedlyhigh-
lightedbyvariousmedia.
Overtheyears,thesepersons-poorforthemostpart-havebeenriskinglifeandproperty(forcedtostrip
offbothprideandclothingdowntojustunderwear)whenfootingitacrosstheWagWaterriver,inorder
tocarryoutdailybusiness.

Overtheyears,theyhavebeenbeggingassistancefrom thegovernment,withtheirpleasseemingly
fallingondeafears,despitethemanynerve-wrackingphotospublished,showingthemriskingtheirlives
intryingtobeproductivecitizens.Many,includingthepreviousMinisterofParliament,accordingtoan
irateresident,advisedthem tomoveawayfrom Chesterfield,theonlyhometheyhaveeverknown,the

HundredsofpersonsnowresideinthegroupofdistrictsknownasChesterfield.

ThecommunitycommencesattheSt.Andrew/St.MarybordermarkedbytheGeorge’sSpring just

aftertheCastletonPrimaryandJuniorHighSchoolandcontinuesdowntoGrandyHole.

Mr.ClivePryce,apartoftheinstrumentalgroupthatgotthingsmovingsaidthecommunitymembers

justgottiredofbattlingthewater.“Kidscan’tgotoschool,theillcan’tgotothedoctor,pregnant

personsnearduedatehavetorelocate...Enoughisenough!”

Hisbrother,Damionandahandfulofothercommunitymembersechoedthesethoughtsanddecided

toact,usingpersonalresourcesandtheassistanceofcommunitymemberswhowerewilling.This

group,comprisingtwelveindividualswhohadtheirregularfulltimejobsbutcametogetheronSundays

toworkonthefootbridge,wasChesterfield’sversionofthe“ATeam”.

Itissaidthatduesandotherfundswerecollectedovertheyearstogetsomethingstartedbutthoseto

whom itwasentrustedforsafekeepmisuseditandthentherewasnothing.

Andso,theyhadtostartfrom scratch,withsomeassistancegivenbyM.P.Dr.NormanDunn.

Theresilienceofthe‘ATeam’innotjustspeakingupforthepeoplebutalsoinactingforthem,ledto
thehistoricaleventofthePrimeMinister’sPromise.
Eventhoughjusta‘littleJunctioncommunity’,theCastleton-Chesterfieldvoterscouldmakeorbreak
aMinisterofParliament’sdream.Thiswasquicklyrecognizedandstrategyemployed,intheform ofa
visitfromthePrimeMinisterhimself,accompanyingtheMPcandidateDr.NormanDunn,rightacross
theverysamespotthatposeddifficultiesforthepeopleofChesterfield.Everyvotewasnecessaryfora
wininthetightby-electionracethatcameaboutafterthesuddenpassingoftheMPoftheopposing
politicalparty.Abridgewaspromised,sotheywouldnolongerhavetochant,“nobaddycannacrassit

selves.WhenthePrimeMinister(AndrewHolness)came,hesaidit’sthefirstcommunityhesawwhere

peoplewerereallymakinganefforttohelpthemselves.Thebridgewasgoingtobehighupontopofthe

columnsbuthestoppedusandpromisedabridge”.AyoungmanknownasLikklecorroboratedthis.He

waspresentthedayofthePrimeMinister’svisitandnotedthattheofficialgroupwasfacedwiththe

difficultyofcrossing,andthencametheirunderstanding.

ThepeopleofChesterfield-likeMartinLutherKing-hadadream,onewhichhelpedthem tocarryon

from daytoday.Theydidnotsitidleanddream awaytheirtimehowever.Theyworkedhard,investing

from theirownpocketstomakeitareality.ActionswhichwerehighlycommendedbythePrime

Ministerhimself.

Ofcourse,therewerethosewhorefusedtoassist,astheywantedavehicularbridgetomiraculously

appear.Andwhiletheywaitedandwaited,theycontinuedtorisklivesandpropertywhencrossingthe

WagWaterriver.

ThecourageofthosewholikeGreatMen“toiledthroughthenightwhiletheircompanionsslept”has

notgoneunnoticed.Variousmediahouseshavecoveredthestoryandevenifthoseweremissed,

passers-byontheJunctionroutepushedheadsfrom vehiclestogetabetterviewofthisunusualfeat.

Onesmallgroup’scourageanddedication,whilebelievingthatasmallstonecanbethefoundationofa

greatmountainifonejustkeepsbuildingonit,confrontedtheWagandmadethatdream areality.

2018withworkersbeingunabletogiveaspecific
enddate.
Formanywhohavelongedfor,forthosewhohave

Itisoftensaidthatoneman’sjoyisanotherman’spain;oneman’slossisanotherman’sgain.
WiththepromisedupgradingoftheJunctionroutewellunderway,manyadjustmentshavehadtobemade,
bothforpassers-byandthecommunitiesthereonthewhole.
Whilesomepersonsareenduringnoiseanddustpollution,losingpropertyastheroadwidensandeven
changescourse,othersarebeingchallengedindifferentways.
Still,weallknow andacceptthattherecanbenodevelopmentwithoutchange.

/Scott’sHallrouteintersectionat GrandyHolewiththehopeofgettingenough
passengerstomakethejourneyworthwhile.

Outofcuriositytoexperienceyetanotherpartofmycountryandbecauseofthemixedreactionshadfrom
commutersandcommunitymembers,IdecidedtohaveatripdowntoAnnottoBayduringthedetour
hours.Somepersonsdirectlysaidallbusiness/travelsduringthisperiodwerecancelledandtheywaitieduntil
after3pm togetactive.SomecancelledallbusinessthatsidealtogetherandjustwentintoKingston.Those
whohadnooptionscomplainedbecauseofthedrastichikeinfareswhichcausesaproblem withtheirstrict
budgetinatimewhenmoneyissohardtocomeby.Otherscomplainedabouttheaddedtraveltime&
distance,whichresultedinthem wakingup/makingpreparations/leavinghomeatleastanhourearlier.
Still,overall,therepairing/buildingoftheJunctionroad-oneofthemostimportantroutesinJamaicabeing
theonewhichconnectsthecapitaltotownssuchasAnnottoBay,PortMaria,BuffBayandhundredsofother
communities-hasbeenhappilyreceived.

Istoodbythesideoftheroad,tryingtoshelterfrom theswelteringsununderamangotreeatsomeone’s
gate.Abusthatnormallywentfrom KingstontoAnnottoBaycamedowntheroadandIfranticallywaved
atit,gladtobegettingaquickride.HappinesswasshortlivedhoweveraswhentheconductorheardI
neededtogettoAnnottoBay,heshookhisheadinpityandthebusspedoff.
ACastleton/AnnottoBayroutebuscameshortlyafterandIagainjumpedforjoy,justtobetoldthatitalso
wouldnotbepassingtheintersectionatGrandyHolewherethedetourtookeffect.
Iwaitedandwaited,beginningtolosehope.Anotherroutebusfinallycamebutthedriverseemedtobe
weighinghismind,scoutingoutpossiblepassengersanddidnotstop.Itwentondowntheroad,circledand
cameback.ThedriveraskedifIwaswillingtopaya100percentfareincreasetogettomydestination.

Hedroveslowly,scouringthelittlesidestreetsforadditionalpassengers.Hedidnotwanttomakethelongtrip

viathedetourwithtoofew toresultinalossforhim asthiswouldtakemorethantwicetheregularamount

offuelthatnormallycoveredtheroute.HeparkedatGrandyHolewherepeoplewhowantedtogodownto

DevonPen(afterthedetourpointbutbeforewheretheroadwasclosed)eagerlyrantowardsthebus.

Thedriverrefusedthem -itmadenosensetogodownthatfarandthentohavetoreturntowherehewas

now,tobeabletocontinuedowntoAnnottoBay.Hewaitedandwaited,thenwithnoincreaseinthenumber

ofpassengers,hestartedthebusanddejectedlycrawledforwardtoFriendshipGapwherefamousfoodstops

stoodsilentandempty.WithonelastclutchatHope,hecalledafellow driverat10.20am,askingifvehicles

werestillbeingsqueezedthroughtheroadwhichisofficiallyclosedoffat9am.Ongettinganegativeresponse,

hespunthebusandreturneduptheroad,gettingjustonemorepassengerforallhisefforts.

At10.26am,weturnedoffattheScottsHall/Junctionrouteintersection,markedbyahandfuloffruitstalls,
snackshopsand ofcourse,thefamousGrandyHolebridgewhich wasfeatured in theJamaican movie
‘TheHarderTheyCome’.
AstheToyotaHiacebusclimbedthenarrow,windingmountainroadthatisoverhungbybambooandother
beautifulplants,myexcitementgrew.Themountainouslandscapewasabsolutelybeautifulandonecould
easilyseehowandwhytheMaroonswereabletoescapefrom slavemastersandsurvivebylivingofftheland.
ThisdetourroadtakesonerightpasstheentranceoftheScottsHallMaroonTown.
Otherswhoknew theroutedidnotsharemyexcitement.Thelessexperienceddrivers/themanywhodonot
know theroutehadfacesthatwerelongandlinedwithworryastheyscreechedtoabrupthaltstorefrainfrom
hittingoncomingtrafficaroundacornerormissedtherouteentirelyandhadtoturnback.
At10.30anelderlywomanwhomountedintothebusexclaimed,“Miupderefram 9ahclack!”.
Onseeingadriverhavingdifficultypassingourbuswhereitwasquitepossible,shesaid,“Deycoward!Likkle
mos’twodrivahcrashwhileahwaswaitin’.Dey‘fraid-deydoanknow diroad.”
Anotherpassengerchimedinthatsignsshouldhavebeenplacedatstrategicspotstoguidecommutersasthere
weremanyroadsthatbranchedofftootherplaces.

Still,therewerethosewhorejoiced:theadditionalthroughtrafficbroughtanincreaseinincometolong
forgotten/unknowncommunitiesandpeoplelinedtheroadwithanassortmentoffruitsandothernatural
foodswhileshopswerestockedwithsnacksandcolddrinks.

Amongstthosewhohavebeencryingarethe’taximen’ontheScottsHallroute,ascommutersnolonger
neededtoconnectbecausethedivertedlong-distancebuseswentstraightbytheirgatesduringdetourhours.
“Taximandem getabeat!Heheheheh!”,laughedawomanonthebusasshecranedhernecktolookbackat
them whenthebusspedby.Amusement,aseventhoughthefaresanddistanceviathedetourweremorefor
her,theadditionalwaittime‘tilconnectingtheScottsHalltaxiwouldgetafullloadwaseliminated.

Thegreatestlamentshavebeenfrom thefoodshopsatFriendshipGaphoweverasthethousandsthatnormally
wentbybetween9am and3pm werenow passingviathedetourthroughthebushes.Thosewhopassedafter

Thebusjiggledandvibratedasitnavigatedthecornerswithhornblaringtowarnothers.At10.48wepassed
theRockRiverPrimarySchoolandInoticedthatthefurtherwewentfrom theJunctionroute,themoreafflu-
encewasreflectedthroughthestyleandsizesofthehouses.
Thefurtherintothemountainsandawayfrom theJunctionroutethatwewent,theharderitbecameforthe
FLOW mobilephonestofindasignalandworkand15minutesintothejourney,allsignalwaslost.
ItreturnedinthevicinityoftheRichmondPrison,passedat11.05am andtheJamaicaConstabularyForce
Area2Garage.
Aswetraveled,eachwithhisownthoughts,anotherwomansaid,“Goodtingdem yahroadroun’yahso!
Wewuddahaffiwaittildem opindiroadoddawise”.
Afterpassingtherehabilitaedcocaofield,anotherchimedin,“Abaycoolielib‘rounyahso!”,alludingtothe
factthatmanypersonsofIndiandescentlivedinthatarea.
Alleppo,featuringahistoricalbridgewaspassedat11.15am andat11.21wedrovepastRobbie’sBucket
CocktailLounge;notcertainwhatisofferedtherebutworthacheckforrefreshments.
At11.24am therewasanotherinterectionandweturnedrightagain,justlikeattheprison.Lookingback,I
saw asignshowingthatwherewecamefrom ledttoAlleppo,Richmond,Kingston...
Now onawider,bettermaintainedroad,thesppedofthebuspickedupandtheaurachanged.Oneknew
theendofthedetourroadwasnear.
Abuildinglabelledasanemargencyshelterwasseenshortlyafter:itclearlyneededemergencycareitselfwith
itsmissingorshatteredwindows,noroofandscattereddebris.Itlookedmorelikeaframethanabuilding.

At11.31weallbreathedasighofreliefhavingfinally
gottentotheWestmorelandBridgewhichconnected
tothelowerpartoftheJunctionroute.Drumswere
usedtoblockaccesstotheupperpartandbeyond
them,heavymachinerycouldbeseeninoperation.

FurtherenquiriesinAnnottoBayrevealedthat‘taxi’
farestoKingstonhadincreasedfrom $300to$600/
tripandbusfarefrom $250to$400/tripviathe
detourroute.

Takenintoperspective,itisadifficultsituationwhichwillbeinplaceforafourmonthperiod,atleast.

Travelerswithverytightbudgetshavetodobusinessbefore9am orafter3pm,cancelortrytodoitin
anothertownnotlinkedbythissectionoftheJunctionroute.
Publictransportoperatorssuffergreatlyduringthisperiodaspersonsrefusethelongjourney-madeeven
longerbyoveranhour-andhavedifficultiespayingfarestheysometimescan’tevenfindwhenatregular
cost.
From myownexperience,anadditionalhourandfiveminuteswasaddedtoajourneythatusuallytookjust
thirty-fiveminutes.Ipaid$300insteadof$150forthefare.Oneway.

Intheend,allIcansayisthatIhopethisrecountwillhelptoguidethosewhowillbetravelingupordown
theJunctionrouteviathedetour.

whichwasmadeofmoredurablematerials.

Attheageoftwelveyears,Mrs.Mallett,withherparents’permission,wenttolivewiththenew
teacher,Mrs.DaisyWrightfrom Manchester,whowasquitelonelyattheteacher’scottage.Mrs.
WrighteventuallyleftthepositionduetoillnessbutthetwomaintainedarelationshipandMrs.
Mallettcontinuedtofocusonherstudieswithhersuccessors.
Attheageofnineteen,Mrs.Mallettgotmarriedandthenthechildrencame-fourofthem -and
studieshadtobeputonthebackburner.Dedicationandthewilltoconstantlystriveforbetterand
highergotMrs.Mallettbacktobook-workandsheeventuallyobtainedherqualificationsand
beganherteachingcareer.
ShestartedoffattheverysameChesterfieldElementarySchoolwhereshehadstudiedandthen
studentsattheDevonPenSchoolandBroadgateSchoolgotthehonourofsittinginherpresence.
Now,maybeevenmorethaneveryoneelse,shedreamsofChesterfieldbeingrestoredtoitsformer
glory,withthecomingofthebridge.

In1963,therewas“agreatdisaster”.ThisreferencedtheunforgettableFlorahurricane.Atthispoint
intime,shehadbeenteachingatDevonPenSchool.Theforceofthehurricanecombinedwiththe
ragingWagWaterriverbrokeawaythebridgeatGrandyHole;thebridgethatlinkedthelowerpart
oftheJunctionroutetotheupperpartwheresheresided.
Theonlyoptionforeveryonewhohadtotraveldownwastotaketheverysamedetourroutenowin
effecttoallowforroadrepairs.
Studentsandworkersalikefacedthedifficultyandformany,theimpossibilityofgettingtotheir
destinations.ThemainschoolforallintheJunctionwasatDevonPenanditjustcouldnotbe
accessed.Studentssatathome,unabletoaccesstheirlessons.Parentswonderedwhattodo. A
newbridgewouldnotbeinplaceanytimesoon.

Mrs.Mallettookituponherselftonotsuggestpossibilities,buttoactuallyprovideasolution.She
requestedpermissiontousethepremisesofthechurchlocatedattheCastletonsquareandthusthe
Castletonschoolwasborn,givingthousandsthechancetoaccesseducation.Thislocationwasused
forsevenyears,untilthegovernmentwasabletoacquirethelandsthatnow hosttheCastleton
PrimaryandJuniorHighSchool.Heresheservedasprincipaluntilinthe1980’sandhasveryinter-
estingmemoriesofincidents.
Onesuchinwhereamothercameonthecompoundtobeatastudentthathadanaltercationwith
herchildpreviously.Mrs.Mallet’sonlysolutiontosavingthepoorabusedchildwastograbthelong
broom andrushatthemotherwhointheend,stoodhumbled.
Anotheriswhenreportcametoherthatastudentwasbytheriversmokinginsteadofbeingin
class.Shesenttocallhim andheranoff,bringingacontradictorystorytothefatherwhointurn
cameandcursedather.Herresponsewastogoinsideandturnupherradio,blockingoutwhathe
wassaying.Sometimeafter,thefathersheepishlyapproachedhertobegforforgivenessandapol-
ogize,explaininghehadheardastorythatdidnotcorrespondtothetruth.

Toaccessthisschool,thereweredifficulties,justasthatwhichhasbeenfacedbytheresidentsof
Chesterfieldformanyyears.
Therewasnobridgetocrosstheriverandonehadtowalkthroughit-whenpossible.
Thisdidn’tfazeMrs.Malletthowever,andshecontinuedtogiveofherbesttobuildcommunityand
country,leavinginvaluableimprintsonallwhosepathsshecrossed.
