MostJamaicanpeoplearealittlespookedbythewordpsychologist,ortherapistand
maybelesssobycounsellor.Iwantedtospendalittletimeinthispiecetalkingabout
whatpsychologyreallyisaboutandhelpotherstoseeitfromadifferentperspective,one
thatmaybeisnotsothreatening.

Weallemploypsychologicalprincipleswhenwethinkabouthowtodisciplineourchildren,
howtomakeourrelationshipsworkbetter,howtofeelbetter,howtodealwithstress,
howtodealwithdeath,howtodealwiththelossofarelationship,howtoachievebetter
grades,whatcareerstochoose,howtoimproveourself-esteem,andwithanyofthese
issues,apsychologistcanbeveryhelpfulinguidingsomeoneastohowtogetthrough
theprocessmoreeffectively.

Psychologyisthestudyofbehaviourandthemindandisnotonlyabout“madness”
(herepeopleareusuallyreferringtoSchizophreniaorBipolarDisorderorotherpsychotic
process,whichencompassabout3%ofallpsychologicaldisorders,butIwilldiscussthat
inanotherissue),butthere’salsoanxiety,trauma-relatedstressors,personalitydisorders,
depression,developmentaldisorders,neurocognitivedisordersandthelistgoeson.
