One’shistory-one’sroots-isveryimportant.
Thinkofthetree;asstrongandthickasthetrunkmightbe,aswideasthe
branchesmighthavespread-growingupandawayovertime-itallhasno
possibilityofbeing,withouttheroots.
Andso,wecelebrate,commemorateandeducate(somedictate)aboutBlack
History.Ourroots.

FebruaryisBlackHistoryMonth,anditisduringthisperiodespecially,thatwe
rememberthefightsofpeoplewholivedbeforeus-fortheirgenerationand
thosetocome-whichresultedinJamaica,the“landwelove”.
Werememberandsalute:
Nanny of the Maroons, Marcus Garvey, Sam Sharpe, Paul Bogle,
Norman Manley, Sir Alexander Bustamante, George William Gordon,
BobMarley,MissLou,NelsonMandela,MartinLutherKing,RosaParks,the
Wrightbrothers,andmanyotherswhohavelefttheirindeliblemarkonour
nation,andtheworldingeneral.

Weinvestmillionsinconcreteandsteeltobuildamansionwithgrilles,tolockourselvesaway“forsafety”,
sometimesbeingunabletocompletethebuildingduetodepletionoffinances...

Andsincewe’reonthetopicofhousing,whichisabasicneedforeveryone,whyisitsodifficulttoobtain?
Thepovertystrickenwhoneedshelterhavethemostdifficultygettingit.

Why,whenNatureprovidesthecompletesolutionforbuildingmaterials,mostofwhicharealreadyonsite?

Wehavebeentaughtthatlivingwithinwallsmadeofconcreteblocksis“life”.
Wehavebeenmoldedtobelievethattostressourselvesworkingnightandday(barelyholdingourseams
togetherwith“prescribedmedications”andunabletospendtimewithfamily,istruesuccess.

Isthis“life”and“success”reallyworthwaitingandworkingyourwholelifefor,whennaturalresources

Shewasnew butsheknew shedidherjobwell,keepingthehousecleanandtidyand
feedinghim filingmealsontime.Still,shewasawarethathewasscrutinizingeverythingshe
did,everymovementshemade;evenwhensheretreatedtoherallocatedquarters,he
pushedhisheadinsidetoglancearound.
Shedidn'tlikeit,butdecidedtoputitdowntohim beinganosyoldman,especiallysince
hehaddifficultyhearing.
Thatis,untilthenighthecalledher,furtivelyglancingaroundandspeakinginhushedtones.
Hedeclared,"Theygoingtokillme!Theywon'ttroubleyou,buttheygoingtokillme!"
Sheshoutedtobeheard,askinghim whathewastalkingaboutandhetookhertocracks
intheolddoorandpointedforhertoobserveoutside.Hedeclaredthattheycameevery
nightandmadevideosoftheplacetoseefrom wheretheywouldentertogetthejob
done;thatheheardthem walkingaroundthehouseeverynightandearlyhoursofthe
morning.Thathejustkeepswalkingaroundandwatching,waitingforthem tocomein,
becausetheyweresurelycomingtokillhim.Hedidn'tknow why,ashehasneverhadany
problemswithanyonedurnghisforty-sevenyearslivinginthearea,buthewascertainthe
familyofhisnow deceasedwifewasbehindtheplot.

Heagainreassuredhiscare-giverthatshewassafe,butthattheywereindeedcomingtokillhim.Hethen
rushedofftoanothercrack,thenontoanotherwindow topeekout,sweatingandbreathinghard,scratching
thetopofhisheadwithhisfacelookingverypink.
Shepeekedthroughthecracksinthedoorforlongminutes,tryingtoseetheimminentdangerthathesaw
whilemullingoverwhathehadsaidandfeelingscaredforherlife.Whywouldtheykillhim andleaveher,
thewitness?
Outside,shesaw threepersonsstandingandchatting;oneseemedtobedoingsomethingonhisphone,
maybereadingamessage.Thebaracrosstheroadhadjustclosedforthenightanditseemedtheywere
exchangingpartingwordsbeforegoinghome.
Still,shecontactedtheman'sdaughter,worriedaboutbothhisandhersafety.
Thedaughterlaugheditoffandcalleditnonsense,saidthathehadbeenbehavingthatwayforyearsnow
andthatdoctorsfoundnothingwrongwithhim.
Thecare-giverhungupthephoneandthoughtlongandhard...onequestionremainedunanswered:how
couldheHEARthem walkingaroundthehouse,preparingtobreakintokillhim,ifhecouldonlyhearwhen
oneshoutedwhathadtobesaid,rightintohisear?
Timeswereseriousandcontractkillingswerealltooreal,butthisseemedtoherlikethemanhadmental
healthissues.
Hejustateandsatandwatchedthewindowsandthedoorsalldaylong-andallnightlong;refusingtoeven
getabitofairorexercise.Doorswerekeptlocked,thickcurtainskeptdrawnatalltimesandlightskepton
allnightlong.
Hegotnervouswhenshesteppedoutintotheyardandwhenshewastoattendtobusinessinthetown,he
wasclearlyjittery,demandingwhereshewasgoing.
Sheneededthejobandhadthoughtittheperfectsolution,butitwasnow seeminglikemoreofaprison.
Shouldshetakehiscommentsseriously?
Orshouldshetakehisoverallbehaviourmoreseriously?
Shouldshejustignorebothandlaughitallofflikehisdaughterdid?

Therewererustlingsoundsinthebushesbelow,neartowhereanoldrefrigeratorhadbeendiscarded.Aglimpse
washadoffleetingfiguresflyingthroughandthedogsbelow barked.Wethoughtitwasjustkidstakinga
shortcuttogettotheirdestination.

Manyminuteslater,whilewalkingaroundouryard,thefigureswerenoticed,stillinthevicinityoftheoldfridge.
Theywerebothfurtivelyglancingaround,puttingonunderpantsandshorts.Thisdefinitelygarneredour
attentionandwestoodandstared,tryingtodecipherthesituation.

Onrealizingthattheyhadbeenseen,oneprancedbehindanearbytree,whiletheotherremainedgluedinsidethe
doorlessfridgethatlayonitsside.Bothkeptpeepingout,watchingforthemomentwhenoureyesandinterest
wouldhavewandered,tosprintaway,unknown.
Wedecidednottomoveandmadethisknowntothem;twootheradultswerecalledtogivetheirthoughtson
thesituationandtheytooagreedthatsomethingwasindeedgoingon.
Oneboywasaboutsevenyearsold,atmost;theotherseemedtobeintheregionoftwelvetofourteen.
Timewentby,theyrefusedtomove,triedtohideasbestastheycould.
Thismadeusevenmorecurious,evenmorecertaintheyhadbeendoingsomethingtheyknewtheydidn’twant
tobecaughtdoing.
Onerealizedthatwewereseriousanddashedfrom behindthetree,leavingthesmalleronetremblinginfearin
thefridge.
Wethewatchersdiscussedanddecidedthatoneofuswouldmoveforward.
Ondescendingtheslope,thesmallboyfinallyemerged,tryingtoheaddownhillbeforebeingapprehended.
Theonewhoapproachedshoutedforhim tostop,askedwherehisparentswereandhisname.Hedidn’twantto
talkbutpressed,hemumbledhisnameandtheattentionofawomanwholivedfurtherdownwasdrawn.
Sheidentifiedherselfashisgrandmother,askedwhathehaddoneandthesituationwasexplained.Weaskedfor
hertochecktheboy.
Shebrokealimbfrom atree,abouttowhiptheboybeforeevenfindingoutthewholestory,butwepleadedfor
hertochecktheboyandfindoutthesituation.Atthispoint,shedemandedthathepullhisclothingdown,and
beganinspectinghim....

Parents,anythingcanhappentoanyofyourchildren,beitmaleorfemale.
Payattentiontothem andhavearelationshipthatallowsforopenlinesofcommunication.
Children,ifitfeelswrong,ifyouhavetobewatchingyourbackandrunningtohide,ifithurts...ITISWRONG!
