Forty-eightyearsismuchmorethansomecanremember,evenmorethanthe atback.

lifetimeofmanyreadingthisarticle.

Yet,itisforty-eightyearssinceMr.ReginaldWalker-skilledcraftsmanandjack-of-all-trades-

hasbeenmakingquality,sought-afterbroomstoearnhislivingandtakecareofhisfamily.

Funnyenough,thiswasneverhisplanbutasmanysay,whatistobewillbe.

AfriendofhisgotintosometroubleandwiththelargeheartthatMr.Walkerhas,whenherealized

thatthefriend’sparentsdidnothavetheneeded100Poundstofixthesituation,hesteppedinand

loanedthissum.Hehaddifficultiesregainingthismoneyandsocameupwiththeplanthatthefriend

(whoknew thecraft)wouldmakeandsellbroomstobeabletorepayhim.Atthistime,onecould

get2penniesforeachbroom.Thefrienddidnotputoutgreateffort,onlycompletingonebroom

andhalf-finishingafew others.Onheedingthewisewordsofhisgrandmother,whotoldhim to

repeatedlypulloutthebroomsthatwerehalf-madeuntilhecouldputthem backtogetherproperly,

Mr.Walkernotonlyregainedhismoneybutobtainedalife-longskillthatfew trulymaster.

Originallyfrom St.Thomas-aMaroonWithoutBorder-“Broomie”madehiswaytotheScottsHall
community4April,1978.Heisamanwhobelievesinworkinghardandhonestly,amanwhoenjoys
natureandashisnamedenotes,heisaseriouswalker,easilycovering distancesthatmanygettired
justthinkingof.
Mr.Walkerishighlyrespectedandlookedupto;someonewhomakesthebuildingofcommunity,
especiallybyinvolvingcommunitymembers,apriority.Despiterecentlylosinghishouseandallhe
ownedinafire(arson),hestillkeepsgivingandgivingandgiving.
Henow hasplanstoform anofficialcompanysothatbroom-makerscanaccesstheexportmarket,
asweMlrls.JaensnifemrHoarrrise-Burrereslpect.Mostcountriesareconvertingto“green”productsandthesewell-made
broomsbothpromoteeco-friendlylifestylesaswellasJamaica’srichculture.

Notjustanyonecanmakebroomsandmakethem well.
AcombinationofArtandScience,gluedtogetherbylotsoflove,it
israretofindtheyoungergenerationengaginginthisprofession.
Tomakebroomsbyhand,intricatelybringingtogetherthatchand
stickinunity,onehastobedisciplinedandpatient.Theworkthen
continuesinthemarketingand sellingofthesewares,teaching
humility.
ForRastafarians,thebroom -anenvironmentallyfriendlynecessity
-symbolizescleanlinessandpurity.

forspecialeventsandpurposes”,declaresMr.Reginald‘Broomie’

Beingasurvivorofchildabusewhoalsobarelymanagedtoescapefrom domesticabusehasleftmesuffering
andwithlifelongscars.However,theseeventshavealsoleftmequiteawareofandintunetothesufferings
ofothers.Otherswhosometimesneedjustonemomentofcheerorencouragementtoliftthem from
sadnessoreventosavetheirlives.Onelittlebitofinformationtochangethedirectionoftheirlives.

TheJRMagwascreatedtoboostconfidence,increaseliteracyrate,educateandinform (tosavelives)aswell
astoshow totheworldtheskills,competences,talents,goodsandservicesthatthepeopleintheJunction
havetooffer,whileguidingoutsiderstothem.

True,theworkishardandattimesIfeellikestopping,butthen,justasmilefrom areader,justanemailfrom
someonewhooncelivedintheJunction,justseeingthehappinessofanabusedchildwhoseworkis
published,keepspushingmeforward.And,initsownway,keepssavingme.

Still,facingmanychallenges(financial,lackofproperequipment,aswellasadditionaltraumaandrisks
broughtonforfinallydecidingtospeakoutagainstandstanduptomyandmychildren’sabuserincourt),
Ihavedecidedtotakeabreakatthis,theendofvolume1,tohopefullyreturntohumblyservingyouatthe
beginningofthenew calendaryear,usingthemanytalentsIhavebeenblessedwith.

Inthemeantime,keeplovingyourselfandlovingeachother.

TheHistoryofBreadfruitinJamaica

Thescientificnameforbreadfruit,Artocarpusaltilisisderivedfrom the
Greekwords"artos"("bread"),"karpos"("fruit")and“altilis”(“fat”)andis
referredtotraditionallyinJamaicaasBreshe.ThefruitcametoJamaicain
1793byCaptainWilliam BlighwhotravelledtoTahitiwhereBlighandhis
team collected2,126seedlessvarietiesofwhich346cametotheisland.
ThesewereplantedinBathBotanicalGardens,St.Thomasanditis
believedthatallbreadfruitsinJamaicaaredescendantsofthose.
However,didyouknow thatthemainreasonwhythebreadfruitwas
broughttoJamaicawastofeedtheenslavedAfricansonsugarplantations?
TheenslavedAfricansfounditdistastefulastheypreferredgrowingand
eatingfoodsthatwerepartoftheirAfricantraditionsuchasyam,cassava
andackee.Breadfruitwasonlyeatenwhentheirfavouredfoodswere
limited,butoverthecenturiesthishaschangedasitisnow widely
acceptedandeatenbyJamaicans.
